Basava Jayanti celebrated in Belagavi

The Hindu30-04-2025

In Belagavi, Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar inaugurated Basava Jayanti celebrations by garlanding the statue of Sri Basaveshwara at Goaves Circle on Wednesday.
She urged youth to read the Vachanas by Basavanna and other Sharanas and also writings by scholars on their lives and contribution to society.
'Basavanna is a 12th century saint-poet who fought for an equal society without discrimination on the basis of caste, class and gender. We should remember him by following his ideals,' she said.
The celebrations were jointly organised by the district administration, the Zilla Panchayat, the Kannada and Culture Department and the Belagavi City Corporation.
'We should walk on the path shown by Basavanna who spoke against 'othering' of communities and individuals. We should embrace all as our own,' she said.
'If we follow the path shown by Basavanna, we can live our life in dignity. Basavanna and his fellow saints dedicated their life to social reform. If we are living a relatively progressive society compared to the ancient times, it is because of the Sharanas,' she said.
Resource person Basavaraja Jagajampi delivered a lecture on the life and ideology of Basavanna. Basavanna ignited the light of wisdom in the deprived classes. However, it is wrong to limit him to one community, Prof. Jagajampi said.
'Apart from his core ideas of Kayaka and Dasoha, Basavanna was also a pioneering Kannada poet. He was a great humanist who reached the pinnacle of intellectualism and worship. He had an open mind and sought forgiveness from everyone,' he said.
Mayor Mangesh Pawar, Deputy Mayor Vani Vilas Joshi, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Rahul Shinde, Additional Deputy Commissioner Vijayakumar Honakeri, City Corporation Deputy Commissioner Udaykumar Talwar, Deputy Director of Kannada and Culture Vidyavati Bhajantri, community leaders Ratnaprabha Bellada, Basavaraja Rotti, Iranna Dayannavara and others were present.

Speaking at the inauguration of a newly constructed school building of the upgraded Government Higher Primary School in PWD Colony, he said that government has taken the initiative to upgrade schools, and this should be supported by NGOs. The school has been adopted and supported by Basava Rajendra Medical Trust. Ramachandraraje Urs, Deputy Director of the Department of Public Instruction, said many initiatives such as Nanna Shaale, Nanna Koduge (My School, My Contribution), have been launched, and alumni continue to contribute to improve amenities at schools. The official said the enrollment in the school was 62 in 2021–22, which rose to 119 in 2022–23 and 210 in 2023–24. In the current academic year 2025–26, 320 children have been enrolled, he said. The school, which earlier had classes from 1 to 8, will now be extended from LKG to 9th standard. It will have class 10 in the next academic year, said Mr. Urs. The Basava Rajendra Medical Trust has provided eight classrooms, a school vehicle, a borewell, furniture, books, uniforms, and computers to the school. The school will be developed in to a model school, he said. M. Basavarajendra, managing director of the trust, said that donation alone will not suffice in upgradation of schools, and the need of the hour was its proper utilisation. He said it is important to learn English, along with Kannada. 'In today's world, learning other languages, along with the mother tongue, is necessary for professional life. Hence, facilities should be provided to teach English in government schools,' said Mr. Basavarajendra. Members of the School Development Management Committee were present.

‘Strict action will be taken against officials failing to implement NREGA effectively'

Effective implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) is crucial for public welfare and any negligence or failure will be dealt with sternly, said Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Raichur Zilla Panchayat Rahul Tukaram Pandve. Chairing an ad hoc committee meeting on NREGA on Wednesday at the Zilla Panchayat office in Raichur, the CEO emphasised that taluk-level ad hoc committees must initiate strict action against those found neglecting their duties or failing to ensure proper implementation of the scheme. The CEO noted that 558 cases are under review across the district and said that details of actions taken should be incorporated into the Action Taken Report (ATR) to facilitate further steps. 'With the onset of monsoon, importance should be given to ensuring the operation of clean drinking water units in rural areas. The officials must inspect the units and take immediate corrective action wherever deficiencies are found. PDOs (Panchayat Development Officers) must strictly to maintain clean water supply and sanitation during the rainy season,' he said. He further advised that preventive measures such as maintaining cleanliness in every village must be undertaken to ensure purity of drinking water. The CEO also mentioned that social audits for the projects undertaken during the 2024-25 financial year began on June 2. He directed the social audit teams to submit all relevant NREGA and 15th Finance Commission project documents and records without fail the same day.
