India starts SAFF U19 Champions with an emphatic 8-0 win over Sri Lanka
Danny Meitei scored a hat-trick as India thrashed Sri Lanka 8-0 to kick off their SAFF U-19 Championship title defence in a spectacular fashion here on Friday.
Danny scored in the 26th, 31st and 50th minutes while Prashan Jajo (17th, 62nd) bagged a brace in the comprehensive win. Md Arbash (40th), Omang Dodum (48th), and captain Singamayum Shami (81st) scored one each.
India, cheered on by a raucous home crowd, showed their intent from the very first whistle.
With slick passing, intelligent movement, and constant pressure, India dominated every inch of the pitch and left Sri Lanka chasing the shadows.
India's midfield dictated the tempo with sharp distribution, while their forwards tore through Sri Lanka's disorganised backline. On the wings, Arbash and Rohen Singh were especially threatening, generating wave after wave of attacks.
The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Prashan Jajo burst down the left flank, beating his marker with pace and precision before smashing home from a tight angle.
Just nine minutes later, a misjudged backpass from Sri Lanka allowed Omang Dodum to pounce and deliver a pinpoint cross for Danny, who made no mistake with a well-timed header.
India made it 3-0 in the 31st minute when Danny struck again -- this time with a powerful left-footed effort from 21 yards out that flew past stranded Sri Lanka goalkeeper Nadal Aaron Senapala.
The fourth arrived before half-time, when Danny floated a cross into the box, which Jajo headed cleverly into the path of Arbash, who tapped home with ease.
The second half resumed with the same energy as the first. Local favourite Omang Dodum got on the scoresheet in the 48th minute, showing brilliant footwork to beat his marker before slotting between the legs of Senapala.
A couple of minutes later, Danny completed his hat-trick after capitalising on a defensive error from Omith Edirisinghe, calmly finishing from close range to make it 6-0.
In the 62nd minute, Jajo doubled his tally after Senapala failed to collect a routine header from India captain Singamayum Shami, spilling the ball into the path of the forward who slotted home.
The eighth and final goal was a moment of individual brilliance from Shami himself, who danced past two defenders before finishing clinically from a tight angle in the 81st minute.
In the other match of the day, Bangladesh and Maldives shared the spoils with a 2-2 draw.

'Jodric was ready to learn and adapt,' coach Bibiano Fernandes told TOI. 'In the future, he can be one of the best defenders Goa and India will have. He has composure, game reading, anticipation. He can surely be part of important teams.' The gold at the SAFF U-19 Championships was a satisfying one for Jodric but it wasn't his first. Not many know that he had already won a SAFF title being part of the U-17 side coached by Ishfaq Ahmed last season. But though he returned home with his first international medal, he hardly played any minutes. Jodric learned from that experience and knew what he had to do to circle a starting role. 'I worked harder and proved what I am capable of,' said Jodric. 'I was never demotivated. I realised I had to step up my game.' His performance has earned him praise from his coach, though he will do well not to get carried away. The youngster has been supported by his club with coach Pradeep Chopdekar having the biggest influence since he joined the residential academy. 'I have been with coach Pradeep for a long time and he has helped me a lot. Because of his hard work, I am a better player. It has been a good experience,' said Jodric. When Jodric was called up for the U-19 probables, he was well prepared. Of the 50-odd players who were summoned, Jodric cut into the final squad of 23 without breaking into sweat. Coach Bibiano's return to India coaching set up has proved to be an additional blessing. 'I like coach (Bibiano) very much. It was good for me with him. I like his tactics and everything he teaches. My next goal is to play in the ISL and represent the senior national team one day,' said Jodric.

India must aim to qualify regularly for FIFA U-17 World Cup: Bibiano
Bibiano Fernandes will turn his focus to the U-17 national team ahead of the SAFF U-17 Championship and AFC Asian Cup qualifiers to be held in November Panaji: Bibiano Fernandes' record with India's junior teams has been impressive. It was during his time at the helm that India were one win away from making it to the FIFA U-17 World Cup, losing a close game against Asian giants South Korea. At regional championships, India have been in a league of their own. By winning the SAFF U-19 Championship on penalties against Bangladesh on Sunday, India have shown that they are the best in South Asia. But, with Bibiano as coach, that's hardly the target. It's much bigger, like making it to the age-group World Cup on sporting merit. 'We can achieve this dream (of playing in the World Cup),' Bibiano told TOI in a recent interview. 'I was on the sidelines when the U-17 team played against South Korea and we were one match away from qualifying for the U-17 World Cup (in 2018). The youth set up is getting better. There are many games. RDFL has also helped a lot. But we still need to do more. If we start doing it right now, we will knock on the doors of the U-17 World Cup soon,' said Bibiano. These are not just words. This is a dream. Bibiano returned to the national team after cutting short his stint at Bengaluru FC. The 48-year-old had only two months to prepare for the SAFF tournament as he joined the Indian junior coaching set up. 'Frist, I thought it would be difficult because time was very short. But I saw the talent we have and was happy with their level,' said Bibiano. 'Most of the players are with ISL teams and training with their seniors. That has helped gain this level and it in turn helped us a lot. To be honest, I did not expect that they would play so well,' he added. The fans too played a crucial role as they turned out in large numbers at the Golden Jubilee Stadium in Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh. The team will now begin their preparations for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup Qualifiers, to be held next year. Until then, Bibiano will turn his focus to the U-17 national team ahead of the SAFF U-17 Championship and AFC Asian Cup qualifiers to be held in November. India made their debut at the U-17 World Cup in 2017 at home but has missed out on qualification ever since. The following year, with Bibiano in charge, they came close to progress on sporting merit after a narrow 0-1 defeat at the hands of heavyweights South Korea in the AFC U-16 quarterfinals in Kuala Lumpur. Bibiano now wants to complete unfinished business. 'We were close,' he remembered. While the India men's senior team has dropped to 127 in the latest FIFA rankings, it has shown that investing in grassroots is the country's best bet of making it to the global stage. 'We can aim for the U-20 World Cup and gradually the senior team can dream. (For that to happen) We must target the U-17 World Cup every edition and be consistent. Hopefully, in six to seven years, we will qualify regularly,' said Bibiano.

Bijay Chhetri becomes first Indian footballer to sign a permanent contract with Latin American side
Bijay Chhetri became the first Indian player to join a South American side permanently when he signed a full-time contract with Uruguayan club Colon FC. Colón is based in Montevideo and competes in the Segunda Division Profesional (second division) of Uruguay. The 23-year-old centre-back was on loan at the club from Chennaiyin FC last season and made his debut against La Luz in November 2024. He became the second Indian to play in Latin America after Romeo Fernandes, who turned out for Atlético Paranaense on loan in 2015. 'Some officials of Colon FC have also been really supportive of my growth since the day I arrived from Chennaiyin FC last year on a loan and subsequently earned a permanent transfer with the club in January. I would like to make a special mention to them,' Chhetri wrote on social media.
