CANNES : US actor Denzel Washington received a surprise honorary Palme d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday evening in recognition of his outstanding career, according to organisers.
Washington, 70, was in southern France for the premiere of US director Spike Lee's latest film 'Highest 2 Lowest', an adaptation of legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's 'High and Low', which also celebrated its premiere on Monday.
Washington, who was joined by co-stars A$AP Rocky and Jeffrey Wright on the red carpet, stars as David King in the crime thriller that marks the fifth time he and Lee have worked together.
The two-time Oscar winner's movie roles have ranged from black activist Malcolm X, to a drunk but heroic pilot in 'Flight.' His turn as a rogue detective in 'Training Day' earned him his second Oscar in 2002 following his first win in 1990 for 'Glory.'
He also directed and starred in the 2007 film 'The Great Debaters' about a professor who coached a debate team from a black US college to national glory, and produced and starred in the drama 'Antwone Fisher'.
Robert De Niro received a Palme d'Or honorary award for lifetime achievement, announced in advance, at the festival's opening ceremony last week, where he used his acceptance speech to call for protests against US President Donald Trump.
'Highest 2 Lowest' is set to hit theatres in the United States on Aug 22.

Sharwita shines at Cannes: Malaysian model champions sustainable fashion and global artistry

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7— Malaysian model and fashion entrepreneur Sharminidevi Parameispran, better known as Sharwita, has returned from her second appearance at the Cannes Film Festival with renewed aspirations to position Malaysia as a global hub for fashion, film, and sustainable development. Sharwita, who graced the red carpet at the premiere of the Japanese film Exit 8 on May 18 during the 78th Cannes Film Festival in France, also drew international attention to Malaysian craftsmanship through her collaborations with prominent designers and brands, including The Atelier by Prof Datuk Jimmy Choo and Malaysian jewellery retailer Thamarai Jewels. 'As a proud Malaysian, I want to build a bridge between our fashion and tourism industries and the global creative scene. We have the talent, culture, and potential to become a fashion capital of Southeast Asia,' she told Bernama in an interview recently. She stunned on the red carpet in a custom gown by Jimmy Choo's The Atelier and adorned herself with an exclusive diamond-studded necklace, earrings, bracelet, and ring from Thamarai Jewels' Celestia Radiant Collection, created specifically for her Cannes appearance. Thamarai Jewels' chief financial and strategic officer, Amjad Ashraf Abdul Rakesh, said Cannes provided an ideal platform to showcase Malaysian artistry on a global scale. 'Thamarai Jewels is honoured to be the official jewellery partner for our Brand Ambassador, Sharwita. Cannes symbolises elegance and exclusivity, which are values that mirror our brand,' he said. He added that the specially designed set of ornaments worn by Sharwita was not displayed elsewhere and attracted interest from international media. 'She was our inspiration. Even global outlets asked about the jewellery she wore. Sharwita is the first Malaysian to showcase an Indian-inspired jewellery brand at a global event,' he said. Sharwita's time in France included being featured on Getty Images, participating as a showstopper in a red carpet fashion event on May 20, and attending an exclusive superyacht networking session in Monaco, overlooking the Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit. 'Taha Shah told me he would love to visit Malaysia and promote our country. It was truly an honour to see our nation's appeal recognised,' she said. Among the key milestones during her Cannes outing was her appointment as Malaysia's Brand Ambassador for Wealth Global Partner, a UK-based organisation promoting sustainable development. 'I will advocate for sustainability in fashion through design ethics, eco-materials, and responsible production,' she said. Sharwita is also working on establishing a fashion tourism forum under her brand Le Fashion Secret to empower local talents, including grassroots designers and aspiring models. 'My aim is to create an ecosystem that links Malaysian talent with global designers, media, and fashion houses,' she said. 'This initiative is timely as Malaysia is the ASEAN Chair for 2025 and is preparing to host Visit Malaysia Year 2026. More than glamour, Cannes gave me global visibility and a responsibility to open doors for the next generation of Malaysians in the fashion and creative industries,' she added. — Bernama

Zidane ‘can't wait' to take ‘dream' France job

After winning three Champions League crowns and two La Liga titles with Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane stepped back from coaching in 2021. (EPA Images pic) PARIS : Zinedine Zidane, widely tipped in France to take over as national coach after the 2026 World Cup, said the job would be 'a dream' and that he was 'looking forward' to taking it. Zidane, who is 52, was speaking at an event on Monday organised by his long-time sponsors Adidas, French media reported. 'I feel qualified for the French team, where I played and spent practically 12, 13, 14 years as a player. Of course it's a dream. I can't wait,' said Zidane, a former captain of Les Bleus and the scorer of two goals as they won the 1998 World Cup final. His midfield partner in that match and in France's Euro 200 triumph, was Didier Deschamps who has been in charge of the French side since 2012. Deschamps led Les Bleus to the World Cup in 2018 but has announced that he will end his reign after the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. As a coach Zidane took Real to three Champions League triumphs and two Liga titles but has not taken a coaching job since ending his second spell at Real in 2021. ‘Adolescence' is second most watched English-language series in Netflix history

The Netflix miniseries 'Adolescence' consists of four episodes. (Netflix pic) PARIS : Who would have guessed that a dramatic miniseries about adolescents in distress would be able to compete with the giants of the Netflix catalogue? And yet, 'Adolescence,' launched in March 2025, has just reached an impressive milestone with 141.2 million views, according to the latest rankings released by Netflix. This figure puts it ahead of season 4 of 'Stranger Things' (140.7 million), an unexpected achievement for a production that is far removed from the conventions of the fantasies or thrillers that tend to tally up the most users. The miniseries had already zoomed to renown in April by climbing to ninth place in the ranking of the most popular English-language series of all time on Netflix, surpassing the performance of the third season of 'Stranger Things.' This momentum shows no signs of slowing down, as 'Adolescence' has even surpassed the ratings of the fourth season of the series starring Millie Bobby Brown. To date, season 4 of 'Stranger Things' has accumulated 140.7 million views, a threshold now surpassed by the drama miniseries. 'We're overwhelmed for you to embrace us the way you have,' said Stephen Graham during Gotham TV Awards à New York, after the miniseries picked up three prizes. 'This was a small, colloquial piece that was made with love, respect, humility and dignity, and we treated the subject with … care and conviction.' The miniseries could also garner several nominations at the upcoming Emmy Awards, which are set to be announced on July 15. Co-produced by Plan B, the company co-founded by Brad Pitt, 'Adolescence' follows the story of a 13-year-old boy arrested for the brutal murder of a classmate. Behind this fictional story, however, the co-creator has said that he was inspired by several real-life tragic cases in the United Kingdom: 'Where it came from, for me, is there was an incident in Liverpool, a young girl, and she was stabbed to death by a young boy. I just thought, why?' explained Graham to Radio Times. 'Then there was another young girl in south London who was stabbed to death at a bus stop. 'And there was this thing up North, where that young girl Brianna Ghey was lured into the park by two teenagers, and they stabbed her. I just thought, what's going on? What is this that's happening?' In first place, the first season of the series 'Wednesday' starring Jenna Ortega maintains its lead with 252.1 million views, topping the list of the most-watched English-language series on Netflix.
