Ryan Preece earns pole for NASCAR's Cook Out 400

Reuters2 hours ago
August 16 - RICHMOND, Va. -- Ryan Preece delivered in the clutch, claiming the second pole position of his career Friday afternoon at Richmond (Va.) Raceway as he tries to earn a playoff position with only two regular-season races remaining before the 16-driver NASCAR Cup Series championship field is set.
It's certainly a good omen for Preece heading into Saturday night's Cook Out 400 (7:30 p.m. ET on USA Network, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at the three-quarter mile track.
His No. 60 Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing Ford Mustang turned a fast lap of 121.381 mph, edging 23XI Racing's Tyler Reddick by .087 of a second. The 34-year-old Connecticut native Preece last earned the pole in 2023 at another Virginia short track, Martinsville Speedway.
"I felt like it was on my bingo card, I'm not sure about everybody else's," said a smiling Preece, who trails RFK teammate Chris Buescher by 34 points for the final playoff points position.
"That Ford Mustang was really sporty. I felt good about it in practice and it showed up for qualifying. We have a great starting spot and tomorrow we've just got to go execute and hopefully we can win this race."
"At a place like this I would rather be out front. ... I'd rather be the one leading. Tomorrow is about getting out front, getting the clean air and setting my pace."
It was also a particularly good day for the small Kaulig Racing team, whose veteran driver A.J. Allmendinger qualified third-fastest for his best career start at the track. Joe Gibbs Racing's Denny Hamlin, a Virginia native and hometown favorite, will roll off fourth. Hendrick Motorsports' Chase Elliott rounds out the top five.
Among those contending for the final three playoff positions, Reddick needs to earn just 30 points Saturday night to finalize his spot. Hendrick Motorsports' Alex Bowman, who holds a 60-point advantage inside the standings, will start ninth. Buescher, in the 16th and final playoff points position, qualified 12th.
Thirteen drivers have claimed Playoff positions with victories this season. A new race winner this week at Richmond or next week in the regular-season finale at Daytona International Speedway would leap over Reddick, Bowman and Buescher in the playoff eligibility.
Hendrick Motorsports' William Byron, the NASCAR Cup Series championship leader, qualified 14th. He holds a 42-point advantage on his teammate Elliott for the regular- season championship and the 15 bonus points that pays following the Daytona race.
Richard Childress Racing's Austin Dillon, the defending race winner, will start 11th. Teammate Kyle Busch, a six-time winner at Richmond, will roll off 28th. Three-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano will start 38th.

Stephen A. Smith reveals his true thoughts on LeBron James in wake of ugly public feud

Stephen A. Smith insists his relationship with LeBron James has deteriorated to the point that he would be happy never to speak to the NBA legend again. Back in March, cameras caught James and the ESPN personality in a heated confrontation during the Los Angeles Lakers' matchup against Smith's beloved New York Knicks. Smith later revealed that James had taken issue with remarks he made about his son, Bronny. They then continued their war of words, with the ESPN star accusing the Lakers star of being a 'liar' and a 'bully'. He even claimed: 'Had that man put his hands on me, I would have immediately swung on him' LeBron, meanwhile, went on The Pat McAfee Show, and mocked Smith for repeatedly discussing their feud. 'He is on a Taylor Swift tour run right now,' James joked. Now, nearly six months on, Smith insists he and James have 'no relationship'. 'He doesn't like me, and I don't like him... if I never, ever speak to him again in life, that will be OK. And I'm good with it,' Smith said Friday on the Gil's Arena livestream. 'There's nobody that can mediate.' He continued: 'All I would say is people don't know the things that have happened behind the scenes... things that have been said, who they've been said to. The kind of things that have been engaged in in an effort to hurt me, along with contemporaries and others.' Smith insisted there is 'a lot of s***' he doesn't say and that 'there's a reason that I feel the way that I do.' 'And the last straw was him approaching me and turning the Bronny thing into something about me attacking somebody's family, when it was him I was talking about. Not Bronny,' the ESPN star continued. The analyst has always maintained that the four-time NBA champion misconstrued his comments about his son. 'And then to go on The Pat McAfee Show, which comes directly on after my show, on the channel that I work on. To insult me. Now, people can get into all kind of components that go into it and all that other stuff. I have nothing to say,' continued Smith, who suggested he would now only discuss James when he has to. 'I'm never going to denigrate any employer, any partner, or myself by getting into anything excessively, unnecessarily, when it comes to him or anybody else,' the ESPN star explained. 'I'm going to do my job. I'm going to cover the game of basketball.'

Cal Raleigh reaches 100-RBI mark as Mariners rally past Mets

August 16 - Dominic Canzone delivered the tie-breaking RBI single during a five-run seventh inning Friday night for the visiting Seattle Mariners, who overcame a pair of deficits to defeat the reeling New York Mets 11-9 in the opener of a three-game interleague series. The Mariners laced a team-record nine doubles and finished with 16 hits overall as they improved to 10-3 this month. Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 46th homer in the third, a two-run shot that made him the first player this season to reach 100 RBIs. He added two doubles later in the game. Caleb Ferguson (3-2), the third of seven Mariners pitchers, earned the win with a perfect sixth. Francisco Lindor was 3-for-4 with two homers -- including a leadoff shot -- and four RBIs for the Mets, who have lost 14 of their last 16. Francisco Alvarez was 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs while Juan Soto homered in the fourth. Each team blew two leads in the first six innings before the Mariners went ahead for good against Ryan Helsley (3-4) and Brooks Raley in the seventh. Eugenio Suarez chased Helsley by doubling home Raleigh to tie the game with one out and scored on Canzone's single off Raley. Mitch Garver walked and Donovan Solano followed with an RBI double. One out later, Cole Young recorded his third hit, a two-run double, to extend the lead to 10-6. Julio Rodriguez had his second RBI double in the eighth before the Mets rallied in the bottom half, when Alvarez hit an opposite-field three-run homer off Jackson Kowar. But Matt Brash struck out Ronny Mauricio and got Lindor to pop out to third before Andres Munoz notched his 29th save with a perfect ninth. Garver homered in the second for the Mariners. Every starter had at least one hit except J.P. Crawford. Mariners starter Luis Castillo gave up six runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out five over four innings. Mets starter Sean Manaea allowed four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven over five innings. --Field Level Media

Salvador Perez shines as Royals continue home dominance of White Sox

August 16 - Salvador Perez hit a tie-breaking home run in the fourth inning, and talented rookie Noah Cameron yielded one run while pitching into the sixth, as the Kansas City Royals extended their home winning streak over the Chicago White Sox to 12 games with a 3-1 victory on Friday night. Perez broke a 1-1 tie with his solo shot off Aaron Civale (3-8), then scored an insurance run via Adam Frazier's double in the sixth for the Royals, who have outscored the White Sox 59-13 during the club's longest home winning streak against any opponent. Maikel Garcia also had a run-scoring single for Kansas City, which has won five of six at home. Cameron (7-5), meanwhile, had his home scoreless innings streak end at 19 1/3 innings when he allowed Lenyn Sosa's two-out homer in the fourth. The left-hander gave up five other hits over 5 1/3 innings. Carlos Estevez struck out the side in the ninth for his 31st save. Civale allowed three runs and eight hits over six innings for Chicago, which has lost nine of 11. The White Sox last win at Kansas City came on Sept. 6, 2023. The Royals wasted no time getting to Civale. After Mike Yastrzemski lined out to open the bottom of the first, Bobby Witt Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino and Garcia followed with consecutive singles for a 1-0 Kansas City lead. Chicago tied it when Sosa cleared the left-field fence with two out in the fourth. But, Perez gave Kansas City the lead right back in the bottom of the frame when he went deep to right for an opposite-field shot. The White Sox chased Cameron when they loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. However, John Schreiber got Sosa to line into a 6-4 inning-ending double play. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the hosts added a run with back-to-back doubles from Perez and Adam Frazier. Royals' manager Matt Quatraro was ejected for arguing Kyle Isbel's caught-stealing call in the fifth. --Field Level Media
