Gauahar Khan opens up about miscarriage, says she didn't stop working during second pregnancy: ‘Can't be unprofessional'

Indian Express19-07-2025
The debate around new parents getting time off from work to focus on their children has been making headlines after Deepika Padukone's exit from Spirit, reportedly because her requests weren't agreed to. Actor Gauahar Khan recently talked about the challenges she faced while trying to tackle the difficulties that come with becoming a mother at the age of 39. Gauahar, who is expecting her second child, revealed that this is actually her third time getting pregnant, as she lost her first child to a miscarriage.
She told Debinna Bonnerjee on her podcast that she feels lucky to be able to conceive at this age, as she always wished to have multiple children. However, losing her first child took a big toll on her. 'I think this was the right time for something like this, and I was 36 when I got married. We knew we had to start trying for a child within a year. I had a miscarriage before, and it took me at least 1 to 1.5 years to recover from that and to be able to tell myself that 'okay, let's try.' When I conceived my son Zehaan, everything went smoothly.' She went on to explain the story behind her first pregnancy and added, 'At that point you assume that everything is going to be fine, and no one had expected me to lose my child. It was extremely difficult, and it took me some time to get over it, so by the time I gave birth to Zehaan, I was already 39, and if I wanted another child, it was now or never.'

When asked about how she handled her work while trying to cope with everything personally, Gauahar admitted that she never stopped working. She said, 'I was working throughout my first pregnancy, and during the first three months of both these pregnancies, I was shooting for an action role. This time around I was blasting bombs while shooting the finale of Fauji 2 in Pune. If I am in the middle of a shoot, I can't be unprofessional in my duties as an actor. The action directors are very accommodating, and they shoot the scenes accordingly.' The Fauji 2 shared that she hardly ever took a break from working, and she was actually shooting for another action role a month before her miscarriage.
'Actually, while I was shooting Shiksha Mandal, I was pregnant with my first child, and I was still shooting all the action scenes, including horse riding. Just a month after that I lost my child, but it's a very strange thing that every time I am pregnant, I end up doing action roles and shooting difficult scenes,' added Gauahar.

Fatima Sana Shaikh: Not only women, but even men face the wrath of patriarchy

Fatima Sana Shaikh has had a busy July as she had two back-to-back releases with Metro… In Dino and Aap Jaisa Koi. Both the films explored love in different ways, and talking about her tryst with love stories, the actor quips, 'I'm living my love life through the films that I'm doing.' Fatima Sana Shaikh(Photo: Instagram) In both the films, her character is battling for a relationship of equals in different ways. Ask her about it and she says, 'Equality in a relationship is very important. I don't have to be a man, I would love to be feminine and the man doesn't have to be me. But there is a synergy that is important to maintain. I don't want my partner to change me and I wouldn't want him to change because we got attracted to each other because we were ourselves. That's why it's important to first respect each other and once that happens, then everything is fine.' In Aap Jaisa Koi, Fatima Sana Shaikh is paired opposite actor R Madhavan, who plays a character whose mindset is formed by patriarchy. The actor asserts that it's not only women but also men who suffer because of it. 'There are men also who are in a toxic relationship. The unfortunate fact is that when they come out with their stories, they're ridiculed. That's also because of patriarchy because boys are not supposed to cry. They can't complain as they are supposed to have this front that 'I take care of the family. I'll take care of everybody. I can't hurt. I'm not weak because it's not accepted'. So, it's not that only women are facing the wrath of patriarchy, even men are,' she says. Recently, as in the case of actor Deepika Padukone and filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga's alleged feud over the film Spirit raised a debate about when female actors make any demands, they are termed unprofessional or difficult to work with. Ask Fatima if she feels that women taking a stand for themselves ruffles the feathers of male bigwits in the industry even today and she agrees. 'In any profession men are more, especially in corporate. There are only a few professions where women are more in numbers,' she says. However, the actor asserts that things are changing: 'The understanding of what actually a woman thinks, it's changing because there are more women who are now working. The perception is now breaking about how a woman should be like, what kind of roles she should do. Now, we can imagine a woman also being a villain. Earlier, we used to see only men as antagonists. Even in corporations, we could only imagine a man being a boss but not a woman. But if a woman is playing that character, then she carries the baggage of what a woman in real life carries when she's at that position,' she ends.

Did Farah Khan take a dig at Deepika Padukone's 8-hour shift demand? Her ‘Sona tapke hi banta hai' comment raises eyebrows

Ever since Deepika Padukone walked out of Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit over her 8-hour work shift demand, there has been a lot of chatter. The industry has been divided over her decision. While many are standing by Deepika, some feel it's not possible in Bollywood. Farah Khan, who has worked with the actress, took an indirect jibe and seemed not to be in support. Farah Khan's thoughts on the 8-hour shift demand In her recent YouTube vlog, Farah Khan visited Radhikka Madan's house. While they were discussing about her first audition for Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi, the topic of shift hours came up. Recalling her experience, the Sarfira actress revealed that the moment the camera switched on, she felt very safe. After giving the audition, she was sure that they wouldn't cast her. But, to her surprise, she was shooting for her next show within 2 days. It was then that Farah questioned her about having an 8-hour shift. Radhikka then replied, '56 hours non-stop or 48 hours non-stop.' The filmmaker who has worked with Deepika Padukone in Happy New Year and Om Shanti Om hinted that even she does not support an 8-hour shift. She shared, 'Aise tapke hi toh sona banta hai (this is how gold is made)." What is the Deepika Padukone and Sandeep Reddy Vanga controversy? For the unversed, Deepika Padukone had agreed to be a part of Sandeep Reddy Vanga 's film after she loved the way her part was written.
