Malaysia sees opportunity as US rethinks AI chip export curbs
KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — Malaysia welcomes United States President Donald Trump's move to revisit artificial intelligence (AI) chip export rules as clarity and consistency in tech policy are vital for global innovation, supply chain resilience and inclusive growth.
The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) said Malaysia is actively engaging with key trading partners to ensure secure and equitable access to critical technologies through the National Geoeconomic Command Centre (NGCC).
'We support frameworks that promote trust, national security and access to tech for responsible nations,' MITI said in response to Bernama's query on news reports that Washington plans to revisit AI export curbs.
Miti said that as a key player in the global semiconductor ecosystem, the Madani government remains open to strategic collaboration that drives innovation and inclusive growth.
Meanwhile, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said such a move would benefit Malaysia, especially the semiconductor industry, while noting that more details would emerge later.
'So, we welcome this move and I think when I spoke to the industry players, they are also very pleased because Malaysia is obviously one of the major destinations, especially given the technology that we produce and use here all involves chips,' he told a press conference after visiting the Malaysia Autoshow (MAS) 2025 at MAEPS Serdang today.
Tengku Zafrul said MITI deputy secretary-general (trade) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa had two meetings with the United States Trade Representatives (USTR).
'We will continue (our meeting with USTR), and next week, I will be meeting USTR's Jamieson Greer.
'I will be flying into Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). He will also be there, and we will take stock of the negotiations that have started between our chief negotiator and the USTR,' he added. — Bernama

Report on alleged sukuk fund misappropriation linked to Klang Valley highway project ready in two months, says MACC chief
BANGI, June 12 — The investigation report on the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds meant for the construction of a highway in the Klang Valley is expected to be completed within the next one to two months, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the probe is progressing well and statements have been recorded from 53 witnesses so far. He added that more witnesses are expected to be called soon to assist in completing the investigation. 'This case will take about one or two months to complete as there are many aspects to examine and documents to analyse, including financial statements,' he said. Azam said the recording of a statement from a person with the title 'Tan Sri' resumed today after a six-hour session was conducted at the individual's residence yesterday. Earlier, media reports stated that the MACC had seized various assets, including handbags, jewellery, luxury vehicles, watches, cash and high-end properties, collectively estimated at RM32 million, believed to belong to a highway concessionaire bearing the 'Tan Sri' title. In a separate case, Azam clarified that the statement from renowned fashion designer Datuk Jovian Mandagie was recorded yesterday in Jakarta, not Bali, as previously reported. It was earlier reported that the MACC investigation team would be in Jakarta for two days to record the statement of the 39-year-old designer, who is Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's former son-in-law, in connection with an investigation into asset ownership involving the former prime minister. Ismail Sabri had been called in multiple times to the MACC headquarters to assist in investigations related to corruption and money laundering involving expenditures and funding for the promotion and publicity of the 'Keluarga Malaysia' programme during his tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022. — Bernama

OpenAI discusses raising money from Saudi Arabia, Indian investors
OpenAI has discussed raising at least US$100 million each from Coatue and Founders Fund as part of its fundraising efforts. CALIFORNIA : ChatGPT maker OpenAI has talked to Saudi Arabia's PIF, India's Reliance Industries and existing shareholder UAE' MGX about its US$40 billion financing, The Information reported yesterday. The investors could put in at least hundreds of millions of dollars each, the report said, citing people familiar with the fundraising. OpenAI is looking to raise more funds to fuel its model development and ambitious infrastructure plan Stargate, with the financing led by SoftBank. Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with India's IT minister and discussed India's plan of creating a low-cost AI ecosystem, after which Altman also had plans to visit the UAE to discuss raising funds with Abu Dhabi investment group MGX, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The Microsoft-backed startup has also discussed raising at least US$100 million each from Coatue and Founders Fund as part of the fundraise, The Information report said, adding that the company also expects to raise an additional US$17 billion in 2027. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. OpenAI, PIF, Reliance Industries, MGX and SoftBank did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

PM Anwar: Govt considering dedicated commission for TVET sector
MELAKA, June 12 — The government is mulling over the proposal to establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission in line with the TVET reform agenda that is being actively implemented. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was because the development of TVET under the National TVET Council chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has shown encouraging results, including an increase in the number of students. 'I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs. 'With the number of students and types of training increasing, I, together with the Ministry of Finance, will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players, and existing TVET institutions.'
