Edited news graphic misrepresents ruling on Philippine VP impeachment

AFP3 days ago
"Du30 are (sic) innocent. It is not our duty to favor any political result. Ours is to ensure that politics are framed within the Rule of Just Law," reads text written on an apparent news graphic shared July 26, 2025 on Facebook.
The post appears to attribute the remarks to Supreme Court Marvic Leonen, whose picture is included in the image.
He penned the tribunal's July 25 ruling that blocked Duterte's trial, saying it violated a constitutional provision against multiple impeachment proceedings within a single year (archived link).
The House of Representatives impeached Duterte in February, charging the vice president with graft, corruption and an alleged assassination plot against one-time ally and former running mate President Ferdinand Marcos.
"They just can't accept that SARA DU30 is innocent, no stain of corruption," says the image's Tagalog-language caption, using a popular nickname for the vice president.

The top court's 13-0 ruling came just days before the Senate was to begin its new session, with the vice president's political future hanging in the balance (archived link).
Widely expected to run for president in 2028, a Senate trial conviction would have barred Duterte permanently from public office.
The claim -- earlier debunked by Rappler -- has also spread on TikTok, YouTube and Threads (archived link).
Several users appeared to have been misled.
ipulated news graphic and misrepresent the Supreme Court's decision on the case.
"Our ruling does not absolve petitioner Duterte from any of the charges. Any ruling on the charges against her can only be accomplished through another impeachment process, followed by a trial and conviction by the Senate," the court said in its decision published on its official website (archived link).
It added a new impeachment process can only be initiated against Duterte starting February 6, 2026.
A reverse image search on Google found the original graphic published on the Facebook page of local media News5 on July 25, 2025 (archived link). It does not include the quote, "Duterte are innocent".

Trump says Putin-Witkoff talks 'highly productive' but sanctions still due

President Donald Trump on Wednesday, August 6 hailed talks between his envoy and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Ukraine as "highly productive," but US officials said sanctions would still be imposed on Moscow's trading partners. Trump, who had boasted he could end the conflict within 24 hours of taking office, has given Russia until Friday to make progress towards peace or face new penalties. US envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin for what the Kremlin said were "constructive" talks two days ahead of the US deadline for Russia. Trump said on his Truth Social platform that "great progress was made" during the meeting – but minutes later a senior US official said that "secondary sanctions" were still expected to be implemented on Friday. Three rounds of Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul have failed to make headway on a ceasefire, with the two sides far apart in their demands. Russia has escalated drone and missile attacks against its pro-Western neighbor to a record high and accelerated its advance on the ground. "A quite useful and constructive conversation took place," Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov told journalists, including AFP, after the three-hour meeting. Putin and Witkoff exchanged "signals" on their positions, Ushakov said, without elaborating. The Kremlin released a video of Putin shaking hands with Witkoff at the start of the meeting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said later on Wednesday that he had spoken by phone with Trump after Witkoff visited Moscow. "European leaders were on the call, and I am grateful to each of them for their support," he added on social media, without saying which leaders took part in the call. Sanctions threat The White House has not officially outlined what action it would take against Russia, but Trump has previously threatened to impose "secondary tariffs" targeting Russia's key trade partners, such as China and India. On Wednesday, Trump ordered steeper tariffs on Indian goods over New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil. The move would aim to stifle Russian exports, but would risk significant international disruption. Trump said on Tuesday that he would await the outcome of the Moscow talks before ordering any economic sanctions. "We're going to see what happens," he told reporters. "We'll make that determination at that time." Without explicitly naming Trump, the Kremlin on Tuesday slammed "threats" to hike tariffs on Russia's trading partners as "illegitimate."

Man outrages France by lighting cigarette from memorial flame

'The man who desecrated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by lighting a cigarette with the memorial flame was arrested in Paris for violating a burial site, tomb, urn, or monument erected in memory of the dead. He was taken into custody and admitted the facts,' Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The video of a man stooping and lighting up from the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe, before walking calmly away watched by tourists, caused indignation when it was widely shared on social media. The alleged infraction took place on Monday evening and the man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, police told AFP. 'You cannot ridicule French remembrance and get away with it,' Patricia Miralles, minister for veterans and remembrance, wrote in a social media post. The tomb, under the Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs-Elysées, contains the remains of a soldier killed in the First World War, laid there as a tribute to France's dead. 'This flame does not light a cigarette, it burns for the sacrifice of millions of our soldiers,' said Miralles. 'This is an insult to our dead, to our history and to our nation.' AFP was not able to determine the origin of the video. Advertisement Le Figaro newspaper reported that it was filmed by a Latvian tourist on the evening of August 4th and first posted on TikTok. The tourist told Le Figaro that the man did not appear drunk and seemed to be well aware of what he was doing. The newspaper later reported that the arrested man was homeless and known to police. If found guilty, he faces up to a year in prison and a fine of up to €15,000.

Images showing a bridge collapsing in Nigeria are AI-generated

'Lafia, Nasarawa State, has witnessed the collapse of a flyover a mere three weeks post-commissioning. According to reports, around N10 billion was spent on this project,' reads a post published on Facebook on July 24, 2025. The post, shared about 650 times since it was published, includes several images that show the pillars of a bridge collapsing to the ground as cars drive under it. Image Screenshot of the false Facebook post, taken on July 29, 2025 President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a flyover and underpass bridge in Keffi on June 25, 2025, during a state visit to Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa state in Nigeria's north central (archived here). Three weeks later, on July 19, David Umahi, the minister of works, announced a partial closure of the bridge after an accident involving a heavy-duty truck caused a beam to collapse (archived here). He also directed that the bridge be repaired within 30 days. Local media reported that two people died in the accident (archived here). However, the images shared on social media are not from the Keffi bridge. AI video Photos from the commissioning ceremony show that the bridge in Keffi is situated in the city centre, with houses on both sides. This is different from the view seen in the images, where trees line both sides of the bridge, and it is a less urban environment (archived here). Image Screenshot showing the view from the Keffi bridge (left), in contrast to the view of the AI-generated Facebook video AFP Fact Check found that a video showing the same scene as in the images is also circulating in India, with claims that it depicts a bridge collapse in Bihar. In Ethiopia, meanwhile, the video is being shared with claims that it shows a bridge collapsing due to an earthquake. The images recently shared in Nigeria are stills taken from this video. Several clues in the video indicate that the video is AI-generated. First, the video shows a group of people running towards the collapsing structure rather than running in the opposite direction, as people would be expected to do in the event of a disaster. Cars are also driving in the direction of the collapsing beam, rather than stopping. To find the origin of the video, AFP Fact Check conducted a reverse image search using the Google Lens tool. This led to a video published on Facebook on July 15, 2025, two days before the Keffi accident happened (archived here). The caption of the original video indicated that it was created using artificial intelligence. Image Screenshot matching features seen in the false Facebook post (left) to the AI-generated video The account that published the video belongs to a gaming content creator who shares various videos — some labelled as being AI-generated — with over 42,000 followers. The actual damage to the Keffi bridge was much less extensive than the scene in the AI-generated video, since the pillars did not collapse, as can be seen in this video report.
