Bitcoin Soars to All-Time Peak Just Shy of $112,000

Observer10-07-2025
NEW YORK:Bitcoin climbed to an all-time high near $112,000 late on Wednesday, driven by increased risk appetite and sustained institutional demand as traditional financial market players continued to embrace the world's largest cryptocurrency.
The digital asset touched a record peak of $111,988.90 and was last up 0.4% at $111,259. Since the beginning of the year, bitcoin has gained more than 18%.
'Bitcoin is the only asset I am aware of where it becomes less risky as it grows in size,' wrote Anthony Pompliano, founder and CEO of Professional Capital Management, in a letter to investors. 'There were few sophisticated capital allocators who could gain exposure when bitcoin was at a $100–200 billion market cap. Now that the asset is measured in trillions, almost every capital allocator on the planet can get exposure.' The Trump administration's crypto-friendly policies have further boosted digital assets, unlocking new pools of capital for the sector. For example, Trump Media & Technology Group , run by the US president's family, plans to launch an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that will invest in multiple cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, ether, solana, and ripple, according to a filing with the US market regulator on Tuesday.
Bitcoin's rally extended to other cryptocurrencies. Ether, the second-largest digital currency by market capitalization, hit a one-month high of $2,794.95 and was last up 5.4% at $2,740.99.
Crypto-related stocks also posted gains. MicroStrategy , co-founded by bitcoin advocate Michael Saylor, rose 4.7% to $415.41, while Coinbase Global advanced 5.4% to $373.85.
Meanwhile, Wall Street continued to hit record highs, brushing off tariff threats from President Trump.— Reuters

US: White House launches official TikTok account

Washington, D.C., US – The White House on Tuesday launched an official TikTok account, despite the China-based video-sharing app facing a ban in the US on the grounds of national security concerns. 'America we are BACK! What's up TikTok?' read a caption on the account's first post on the popular video sharing app, a 27-second clip. The account went live with a video showing footage of Trump declaring: 'I am your voice.' A couple of hours after the first video was posted there were just under 19 thousand followers, although US President Donald Trump's own TikTok account has 110.1mn followers. TikTok facing US ban Trump has continued to allow the platform to operate in the US while extending the deadline for TikTok to find a non-Chinese buyer. The current extension is due to expire in mid-September. Trump had initially tried to ban the social media network during his first term as president, but has since reversed his position and has credited it with helping him gain support among young voters in his return to the White House. 'The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible,' White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. 'President Trump's message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we're excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before,' she added. There is concern among US lawmakers that user data could fall into the hands of China's government. Trump has been working on a deal for US investors to buy the app from TikTok's Chinese parent, ByteDance. DW

Oil prices await Zelenskiy-Trump meeting clues on peace deal

LONDON:Oil prices held steady on Monday as traders awaited clues from a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as they attempt to reach a peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years. Brent crude futures stood at $65.87 a barrel at 0847 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude was up 9 cents, or 0.14%, to $62.89 a barrel. Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Saturday and emerged more aligned with Moscow on seeking a peace deal instead of a ceasefire first. 'Market focus now shifts to today's Washington meeting for signs of a deal that could eventually boost crude and gas supply. Meanwhile, in the week to August 12, speculators held the first-ever combined net short position in WTI (CME & ICE), leaving prices exposed to any upside surprises,' said Saxo Bank's head of commodity strategy, Ole Hansen. 'I don't believe the oil market has priced in a full peace dividend that potentially could see prices of crude and EU gas suffer further setbacks,' Hansen added. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro's comments around India's purchases of Russian crude funding Moscow's war in Ukraine led to crude ticking up earlier in the session. 'India acts as a global clearinghouse for Russian oil, converting embargoed crude into high-value exports while giving Moscow the dollars it needs,' Navarro said. 'The US adviser's sharp words on India's Russian crude imports, paired with postponed trade talks, revive concerns that energy flows remain hostage to trade and diplomatic frictions, even as peace prospects in Ukraine brighten,' said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at brokerage Phillip Nova. On Saturday, Trump said he did not immediately need to consider retaliatory tariffs on countries such as China for buying Russian oil but might have to 'in two or three weeks,' cooling initial concerns about a disruption in Russian supply. China, the world's biggest oil importer, is the largest buyer of Russian oil, followed by India. Dollar firms heading into busy week of geopolitics

SINGAPORE: The dollar gained against the euro and sterling on Monday ahead of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian and European counterparts, while focus also turned to the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium for policy cues. The euro was down 0.2% against the dollar at $1.1683, while the British pound slipped 0.1% to $1.3546. The paring of wagers on a rate cut by the Fed next month helped the dollar find some support amid otherwise muted moves in foreign exchange markets. Money markets are now pricing in an 85% chance the Fed will ease rates by a quarter point next month, as traders pulled back wagers on the certainty of a cut after a jump in US wholesale prices and a solid increase in July's retail sales. Fed Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak on the economic outlook and the central bank's policy framework at the Jackson Hole symposium between August 21 and 23. MUFG expects the US central bank to cut rates in September as well, but it's unlikely that the Fed chair will give a clear signal towards that later this week, said Lee Hardman, senior currency analyst at MUFG Bank. The main event for investors on Monday is a White House meeting between Trump and Zelenskiy, joined by European leaders, as Washington presses Ukraine to accept a quick peace deal. Trump had met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Friday and agreed that a peace deal should be worked upon without a ceasefire. "Financial markets are continuing to trade like there could be some - still undetermined - path to peace," an ING analyst note said. In other currencies, the dollar rose 0.1% against the Japanese yen to 147.38, while the Swiss franc slipped 0.1% to 0.8069. The Australian dollar rose 0.1% to $0.6515, and the New Zealand dollar rose 0.3% to $0.5941 after falling last week. Cryptocurrency bitcoin eased 2% to $115,362.46, while ether slid 4.3% to $4,275.85.— Reuters
