Andhra Pradesh sees major boost in road infrastructure under CRIF: Nitin Gadkari

The Hindu2 days ago
Andhra Pradesh's road network is set for a significant upgrade, with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announcing impressive progress and fresh approvals under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF).
Responding in the Lok Sabha to a question from Eluru MP Putta Mahesh Kumar, the Union Minister revealed that over the past three years, including the current financial year, Andhra Pradesh had seen 20 State road projects completed, spanning 691 km at a cost of ₹535 crore.
'The momentum is far from over. Fifty-five more projects, covering 534 km, are currently underway in Andhra Pradesh with a sanctioned cost of ₹1,256 crore. These works promise to further strengthen connectivity across districts and ease travel for both commuters and freight movement,' he said.
Looking ahead, the Centre approved 57 new projects under CRIF in the State. These would cover 718 km and involved a financial commitment of ₹1,928 crore, a move expected to create thousands of jobs and accelerate economic activity along key corridors.
Mr. Gadkari emphasised that the CRIF operates under the provisions of the CRIF Act, 2000, ensuring that all States and Union Territories received their share of funds for the development and maintenance of vital road infrastructure.
'With sustained investment and coordinated planning, Andhra Pradesh is well on its way to achieving a world-class road network,' he noted.

CJI Gavai inaugurates Gauhati high court's permanent bench in Arunachal

Itanagar: Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai on Sunday inaugurated the newly built permanent bench of the Gauhati high court at Naharlagun, calling it a 'historic step' towards making justice more accessible and affordable in the state and the Northeast. CJI Gavai lauded the Gauhati high court's leadership for expanding judicial access in remote areas. The inauguration was attended by Union minister for parliamentary affairs Kiren Rijiju, Union minister of state for law and justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, chief justice of Gauhati high court Ashutosh Kumar, judges from the Supreme Court, Gauhati high court, and the Itanagar permanent bench, along with several eminent judges from high courts across the country. Addressing the gathering, Gavai advocated decentralisation of judicial services, stressing that justice must be delivered at people's doorsteps. He said the judiciary, legislature and executive are meant to serve every citizen, not just the privileged few. The CJI praised the Gauhati high court's leadership for expanding judicial access in remote areas and lauded Arunachal's cultural richness — home to 26 major tribes and over 100 sub-tribes. 'Preserving and conserving our traditions is a fundamental duty under the Constitution,' he said, adding that progress must not come at the cost of heritage. Quoting B R Ambedkar, he described the Constitution as the 'great granth' of the nation and underlined the importance of Schedules V and VI in safeguarding the rights and culture of tribal communities. 'Political equality without economic and social equality has no value,' he said. Chief minister Pema Khandu called the occasion 'a momentous day in the judicial history of Arunachal Pradesh and India,' describing the state-of-the-art facility as 'a symbol of hope, accessibility, and unwavering pursuit of justice.' The foundation stone for the 19,000-plus square metre structure was laid on August 12, 2018, by Khandu. Despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, difficult terrain, long monsoon seasons, and high logistics costs, construction was completed in less than four years at a cost of nearly ₹250 crore. The CM credited the achievement to the collaborative efforts of the Gauhati high court, members of the Bar, state government officials, the PWD, and the contractor. Highlighting the state's progress in judicial infrastructure, Khandu said Arunachal Pradesh had expanded from just two courts in 2016, when he first assumed charge, to 33 functional courts today, with eight added recently and 463 new posts created in the district judiciary. Welfare measures for judicial officers, procedural reforms, and dedicated NDPS courts in Tezu, Khonsa, and Yupia are also underway. 'The inauguration of this court is the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream of our people. It will enhance access to justice, ensure speedy resolution of cases, and strengthen the rule of law in our state,' he said, reaffirming his government's commitment to strengthen the justice delivery system from the high court to district and CJM courts. Gauhati high court chief justice Ashutosh Kumar said the new building reaffirmed the constitutional promise of justice unhampered by geography. 'Let Arunachal be the place where justice comes first without delay, just as it witnesses the first sunrise,' he remarked, describing courts as 'temples of constitutional morality.' Union minister Kiren Rijiju and Supreme Court judges Ujjal Bhuyan, N Kotiswar Singh, Sandeep Mehta and Vijay Bishnoi also hailed the new facility as a leap forward for the frontier state. Spread over more than 19,000 sq metres, the complex houses five modern courtrooms and state-of-the-art facilities, and was built by the public works department, marking a significant step in bridging the justice gap for one of the country's most geographically challenging regions.

Rahul Gandhi misled nation with ‘Constitution will be changed' lie: Ramdas Athawale

Republican Party of India (Athawale) chief and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has taken a sharp aim at opposition leaders, including Sharad Pawar, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, and other INDIA bloc leaders. In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Athawale slammed the opposition for spreading what he called 'false narratives' to mislead the public and also shared key details of his recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Responding to Sharad Pawar's controversial statement -- wherein the former Union Minister claimed that two individuals approached him during the Maharashtra elections and assured him of winning 160 seats -- Athawale said: 'If someone is making such a claim, they could be trying to blackmail. Elections are a democratic process, and such statements raise doubts about integrity.' Addressing the ongoing controversy around EVMs, Athawale acknowledged the possibility of technical issues in some machines but dismissed broader allegations: 'There might be glitches in a few EVMs, but it's incorrect to say all machines are faulty. When the NDA won fewer seats and the INDIA bloc won more, we did not question the system. We respected the results.' Athawale accused Rahul Gandhi of misleading the electorate during the Lok Sabha elections by falsely claiming that the Constitution would be changed under the BJP government: 'Rahul Gandhi and his allies spread the false narrative that Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution would be scrapped. There is no truth to this. The public now sees through these lies.' Revealing details of his meeting with PM Modi, Ramdas Athawale said they discussed the success of Operation Sindoor, a recent counter-terror operation. 'Our armed forces destroyed terrorist hideouts without any civilian casualties. That is commendable.' He also raised concerns about seat-sharing in Maharashtra, alleging that the BJP's state unit is not treating RPI fairly within the Mahayuti (grand alliance). 'I told the Prime Minister that RPI is being sidelined in seat distribution. We're being denied seats in Zilla Parishads, local body elections, and even one ministerial and one MLC post that we are demanding. PM Modi discussed with me about our party's performance, and I believe Devendra Fadnavis will do justice and fulfil our demands.' Taking another swipe at Rahul Gandhi, Athawale said: 'Rahul Gandhi avoids approaching the Election Commission and prefers misleading people through public statements. The Commission has already stated that if there are any mistakes, they're open to correction. If Rahul has proof of bogus voting, he should submit it, not just create drama.' Speaking on the BJP-led NDA's performance, Athawale admitted losses in the Lok Sabha polls but emphasised their comeback in later elections: 'Yes, we suffered losses in the general elections, but BJP and NDA have bounced back in Haryana, Delhi, and Maharashtra. In Maharashtra alone, we won 237 seats. The public continues to trust us.'

Crop insurance boost: Agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to transfer Rs 3,200 cr PMFBY claims on Monday; new rules bring faster payouts

Agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will digitally transfer Rs 3,200 crore in crop insurance claims on Monday under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) to 30 lakh farmer beneficiaries. The transfer will take place during an event in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, attended by Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Union Minister of State for Agriculture Bhagirath Choudhary, and state agriculture minister Kirodi Lal Meena, PTI reported. According to an official statement, of the total claim amount, Rs 1,156 crore will go to farmers in Madhya Pradesh, Rs 1,121 crore to 7 lakh farmers in Rajasthan, Rs 150 crore to beneficiaries in Chhattisgarh, and Rs 773 crore to farmers in other states. Chouhan said the Centre has introduced a simplified claim settlement system in the interest of farmers, allowing proportionate payments based only on the central subsidy without waiting for the state's premium contribution. 'From the Kharif 2025 season onwards, if a state government delays its subsidy contribution, it will be penalised at 12 per cent, and similarly, if insurance companies delay payments, farmers will receive a 12 per cent penalty,' he stated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Certificate in Technology MIT-TLIP Apply Now Undo Since its launch in 2016, PMFBY has disbursed claims worth Rs 1.83 lakh crore, against farmers' premium payments of Rs 35,864 crore. 'This means an average claim payout of more than five times the premium, indicating the government's farmer-friendly policy,' Chouhan said. The agriculture ministry noted that several technological initiatives — including YES-TECH, the WINDS portal, the AIDE mobile app, the Krishi Rakshak Portal, and helpline number 14447 — have improved claim settlement speed, enhanced transparency, increased weather data accuracy, and enabled farmer registration facilities at the village level.
