TELUK INTAN: A heavy silence settled outside the Teluk Intan Hospital mortuary as grieving families gathered to identify the bodies of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) officers killed in a tragic road accident.
The nine personnel – eight who died at the accident site on KM15 Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, and one who passed away at the Teluk Intan Hospital red zone – were in an FRU vehicle when a sand-laden lorry crashed head-on into the vehicle yesterday.
Among those at the hospital was 71-year-old Pandak Rompan, who is still mourning the recent loss of his grandchild and must now also face the tragic passing of his son.
The grief-stricken Pandak said his third child Kpl Nurit, 34, who had been with the force for 15 years, was among the casualties.
'He was previously with FRU Cheras before being transferred to Sungai Senam, Ipoh. He used to commute daily from Kampar to work. Usually, he would return home on his days off,' he said.
'I knew he was on duty in Teluk Intan, but I never expected to receive news of his death.'
According to the retired police officer, the last time he saw his son was two weeks ago at their family home in Kampar.
'He was a good person, quiet and very friendly with everyone. He never gave me, his mother, or his siblings any trouble,' he said.
He added that Nurit was married and had a child who passed away five months ago due to heart complications after being critically ill for over a year.
'We just lost our grandchild, and now our son is gone too,' Pandak lamented.
The wife of Kpl Amiruddin Zabri, 38, could not hold back her tears when talking about the tragedy.
Norazian Mohd Joned, 38, a civil servant at the Kampar police headquarters, said she last met her husband on Monday afternoon, shortly before he left to carry out his duty in Teluk Intan.
The mother of three children, aged between 15 months and 12, from Gopeng said she was used to his out-of-town travel for work.
'This morning, I received information in some chat groups regarding the accident and I immediately called my husband, but the calls went unanswered.
'I called a friend of my husband's, who told me to be calm, and then he broke the news to me,' she said.
The brother of Sjn S. Perumal, 44, another personnel who died in the accident, said his older brother was supposed to take his family in his car to the Chitra Pournami festival in Teluk Intan.
Ahren, 41, a teacher, said his brother had told his wife, a nurse at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital, and two young children to come along to the event and that he would drive.
Perumal leaves behind two daughters aged five and seven. He had been in the police force since 2011.
Ahmad Saat, 75, the father-in-law of Kpl Mohd Pozli Jaudin, 41, said he received the news from his daughter, a teacher in a school in Ipoh.
'My son-in-law was a good man and a father of three girls aged between five and 13. I don't know what to say. It's fated,' said Ahmad, who lives in Hutan Melintang.

PDRM planning book on senior police officials' experience in special ops

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) are planning a book containing the experiences of former senior police officials carrying out special operations to act as reference for junior officers and personnel. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said they have reached out for views and information from members of the Retired Senior Police Officers' Association (Respa) who have been involved in successful operations. 'In the Special Branch itself, we have produced a book on operations carried out, in the Criminal Investigation Department I feel many operations need to be recorded as reference to officers and personnel who have just gotten involved in such operations. 'This might be because there's too much information and experience among retired police officials, maybe there are similar operations and this book can be a guide so that new officers don't make the same mistakes,' he told reporters after officiating the 41st Respa annual general meeting here today, with Respa chairman Datuk Meor Chek Hussein Mahayuddin in attendance. He added that the effort would take some time as it required retired officers to share their experiences and information. 'Many senior officers who have retired have approached me personally, sometimes about sensitive legal issues, and I've used that a lot as a guide,' he said. In his speech, Ayob urged Respa members to update their personal details in the e-Pesara PDRM system, especially their latest addresses, health status and beneficiary's contact details so that information relating to benefits from the government could be channelled well. 'I pray that Respa continues to be successful in its noble efforts in safeguarding its members' interests and welfare,' he added. Respa also channelled donations worth RM51,712 to the beneficiaries of the Sungai Senam Camp Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) Unit 5 personnel who were involved in the May 13 crash in Teluk Intan. Ayob presented a cheque to FRU deputy commander ACP Mohd Fadhli Daud, who represented the beneficiaries.

Anthony Loke told to 'step down with honour' after fatal crash that leaves 9 FRU cops dead

ENOUGH IS enough. Public anger from the viral video of the mother elephant grieving for her dead calf which was knocked down by a container lorry on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway (JRTB) over the weekend has yet to subside when nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) policemen perished in another fatal crash with a stone-laden lorry in Teluk Intan. This has led to the cyberspace being swamped by calls for Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook to give up his 'coveted' portfolio. 'If @anthonyloke feels that he's unable to solve this problem of killer lorries and trucks, it would be best that he steps down with honour,' pro-Madani Datuk Jahat Hensem (@datukhensem) reacted to a netizen update on the 8.50am accident along Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam yesterday (May 13). Kalau @anthonyloke rasa tak mampu nak selesaikan masalah lori and truck pembunuh ni, mungkin lebih baik berundur secara terhormat. And harap pihak polis and jpj makin tegas lah dengan pihak lorry lepas ni. Anggota awak ni yang meninggal. — Datuk Jahat Hensem (@datukhensem) May 13, 2025 'And I hope the JPJ (Road Transport Department) and the police will be stricter with heavy vehicles after this. It was your crew members who perished.' Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay has confirmed that the 45-year-old lorry driver involved in the fatal crash has six criminal records – one related to drugs, theft (four) and rape (one). 'All cases resulted in convictions. A urine test came back negative. Despite online claims that he had consumed ketum, no traces of ketum were found, and his urine test results were clean,' Ayob Khan told a media conference at the Hilir Perak police headquarters yesterday (May 13). As the said lorry driver would be brought to the court today (May 14) for a remand hearing, Ayob Khan also updated the media on condition of the nine injured policemen, of which six were in the red zone (critical condition) while three were in the yellow zone (moderate injuries). The trolling on Loke became more intense when a commenter played the race card by claiming that 'if one Chinese dies, he (Loke) will bring a bunch of (DAP) parliamentarians to make a PC'. Thankfully, some netizens cautioned him against making racist remark as there were also Malay transport ministers during the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration yet nobody made a fuss when fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles occurred. Brushing aside racial sentiment. another reckoned that it has to do with people, alluding to '2 or 3 people who died because of unattended potholes'. 'But when Khairi Jamaluddin (then the science, technology and innovation minister) fell and got injured, the issue was settled within one day. It seems that it's fine if the victims are the rakyat so long as they aren't VVIPs'. Other criticism levelled at Loke ranged from not being sensitive to the plight/safety of light vehicle road users and 'more apt at selling number plates' to allowing heavy vehicles (buses lorry, trailers) to be 'road demons' and little action to curb drunk driving. However, some fair netizens came out to defend Loke by recalling that when the JPJ conducted a massive operation against errant lorry driver in October 2023, there were much hue and cry that 'a Chinese minister is persecuting lorry drivers who are moistly Malays'. 'This led to Loke appointing alternative companies to carry out vehicle inspection services. Now when an accident occurs, why are you (still) attacking him?' – May 14, 2025
