EU 'blocking Britain's bid to join Mediterranean trade zone'
Ministers said they would 'consider the benefits' of joining the PEM as part of efforts to boost British exports. The PEM allows for tariff-free trade of some goods from across dozens of countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
But, according to the Financial Times, the European Commission has made clear to Britain that it would not currently support UK membership of the PEM. EU officials said Brussels bosses had decided that the UK joining the PEM was not currently in the bloc's interests, the newspaper reported.
The EU is said to fear it would increase the risk of products unfairly qualifying for low-tariff access to the bloc. It comes despite Sir Keir and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently striking a 'reset' deal following a UK-EU summit in London. The agreement, signed in May, covered fishing, trade, defence and energy and represented the biggest change in Britain's relations with the bloc since Brexit.
Although the PEM is not exclusively an EU arrangement, trade experts said Britain would need EU co-operation to join because it would require a rewriting of the post-Brexit trade deal. Sam Lowe, trade lead at consultancy Flint Global, said: 'For it to be meaningful for the UK, the EU would need to agree to incorporate the PEM rules of origin into the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement.
'This gives the EU de facto blocking powers.' David Henig, a former UK trade negotiator now at the ECIPE think-tank, said: 'The EU isn't united on the importance of the UK reset and issues like PEM can easily be caught up in this even though technically straightforward.
'The UK Government is going to have to work hard in London and Brussels to build momentum.' Although they have left the door open to joining the PEM, the Prime Minister has repeatedly ruled out rejoining the EU's single market or customs union. A Government spokesperson said: 'This Government has secured a new agreement with the EU to support British businesses and jobs and put more money in people's pockets.

Man Utd like Baleba - but he would cost 'an enormous amount'
Manchester United are on the lookout for someone who could strengthen their midfield and skipper Bruno Fernandes has called for new they like Carlos problem is Brighton's desire to sell, which is non-existent, and owner Tony Bloom's negotiating tactics. Hard is not to say United could not get Baleba - it is just that it would cost an enormous amount of money, probably in excess of anything United have spent so far this is not obvious where the money would come from, because even if they can sign Benjamin Sesko without selling players first, eventually they will have it would take more than getting rid of the 'bomb squad' which even the club accepts is likely to be later in the key point is whether United look for an alternative or keep their powder dry for Baleba, either in case circumstances change dramatically in this window, or, more likely, for next summer.

The criminal case that killed Kemi Badenoch's belief in God
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has revealed she lost her faith in God after learning about the case of Austrian sex offender Josef Fritzl in 2008. She explained that the unanswered prayers of Fritzl's daughter and captive Elisabeth Fritzl, contrasted with her own trivial prayers being answered, caused her to question her belief. That was a turning point that she described as being 'like someone blew out a candle'. Despite rejecting God, Ms Badenoch said she had not rejected Christianity and remains a 'cultural Christian '. She said she wants to 'protect certain things because I think the world that we have in the UK is very much built on many Christian values'.

Newcastle ‘want Aston Villa star John McGinn' as Howe looks to bolster midfield after miserable transfer window
NEWCASTLE want to sign Aston Villa star John McGinn, according to reports. The Magpies have had a miserable transfer window after missing out on several top targets. 1 And after selling Sean Longstaff to Leeds the squad is short of a midfielder. Boss Eddie Howe likes to have six central midfielders to choose from and has identified McGinn as a possible arrival, report the Daily Mail. The Scotland international is a stalwart at Villa and still has two years remaining on his contract. But Unai Emery's side could be persuaded to sell in order to meet PSR regulations. Another Villa midfielder, Jacob Ramsey, is another player Newcastle have looked at, while Coventry's Jack Rudoni has caught the eye. Newcastle are in desperate need of incomings after failing to land key targets, with Benjamin Sesko the latest. The RB Leipzig striker appears to be Manchester United-bound despite Toon having a bid accepted. But United have matched Newcastle's £74million bid and Sesko wants to move to Old Trafford. That means Newcastle's search for a striker continues with Alexander Isak's future hanging in the balance. Toon knocked back a £120m bid for the Swede from Liverpool, and he has spent much of pre-season training elsewhere, at his former club Real Sociedad. .
