Big Ten volleyball head coaches reflect on John Cook's legacy ahead of 2025 season
Each coach spoke praise of the Nebraska legend, emphasizing how he helped the sport become what it is today. Even Nebraska's new head coach Dani Busboom Kelly reflected on her time with Cook, both as a player and an assistant coach.
"It's been a ton," she said. "His mentorship, friendship. Just what he's done for the sport of volleyball, always pushing it forward and never giving up. He's not afraid to go out there and keep pushing the envelope over and over again."
Cook's impact has been felt in Nebraska and across the nation, the biggest reflection of that being the Huskers' match against Omaha at Memorial Stadium in 2023, with 92,003 fans in attendance.
"We wouldn't be here without John [Cook]," Illinois head and former Nebraska assistant coach Chris Tamas said. "You talk about the stadium match. It could probably only happen in one place in the country. To have the turnout they do with their fans every single match, a lot of that is John's drive."
Under Cook's tenure, the Huskers wrangled four national championships, 12 Final Four appearances, nine Big 12 titles, five Big Ten titles and 722 total wins, the most by a D-I coach this century.
"They were never satisfied with where they were at," Minnesota head coach Keegan Cook said. "Always thinking about growth. Always thinking about doing something that hadn't been done before, and just being merciless in that space, not getting distracted from making his program the best it could possibly be."
Cook was also a leader in the sport, helping it grow across the decades with 11 of the 12 biggest crowds in NCAA women's volleyball history featuring Nebraska.
"For volleyball, he's been incredible for the growth of the game," Northwestern head coach Tim Nollan said. "He was such a pillar for a long time, bringing the sport forward and pushing it to new heights. We're still going to be talking about him for 10 years."
His impact was also felt among the coaches across the conference who respected not only his coaching but also his sportsmanship.
"I always respected John for the success he had," Maryland head coach Adam Hughes said. "But anytime we went there, he always checked on me before the game, shook my hand. He always wanted to know how I was doing, how the kids were doing. It just speaks volumes as to who he is."
With his retirement, Cook leaves behind a legacy that will still be felt for years to come. For Nebraska, the team enters a new era, one that both Cook and Terry Pettit built.
"He's one of the greats of the game," Penn State head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley said. "He's made a huge impact on the sport across the country, and I think he'll continue to do that. I'm sure he'll be on TV. But you can't replace coaches like him, and I was lucky enough to be around him."

THOUSAND OAKS, California — Jaime Jaquez Jr., who is preparing for his third season in the NBA with the Miami Heat, and his sister Gabriela Jaquez, a standout player for the UCLA Bruins and the Mexican national basketball team, set aside their own workouts to lead others through some familiar drills. The siblings recently hosted a summer camp for about 180 participants ages 6 to 16 at the Sports Academy facilities in Thousand Oaks. The three-hour camp aimed to promote basketball skills, discipline and a passion for the sport among children and teens. Some participants traveled from other states to attend the camp. 'It's good to come back and give something back to the community, especially in a place where we grew up. Being able to do this is special,' said Jaime, who grew up in Camarillo, shone for four years at UCLA and has represented Mexico in international tournaments. During the event, Jaime recalled his childhood playing basketball 'from dawn to dusk' on the local courts in his hometown. The camp was also a source of inspiration for families. 'It's exciting to see Latino players succeed, one in the NBA and another possibly in the WNBA,' said Armando Castillas of Oxnard, who attended the camp with his children, Logan, 6, and Emma, 10. In addition to leading the camp, the Jaquez siblings are focused on their upcoming professional challenges. Jaime is looking for a season of redemption after a difficult year with the Heat, having been named to the all-rookie team 2023–24. 'It has always been my goal to win championships,' said Jaime, who noted that he preferred to focus entirely on improving with the Heat before making any commitments to the Mexican national team. For her part, Gabriela recently returned from competing in the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup in Chile with the Mexican national team. In the tournament, Mexico faced the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Chile, and the Dominican Republic. Gabriela averaged 12 points per game, ranking as the 10th-best scorer in the tournament, and was recognized as the Rising Star of the competition. She had previously played for Mexico, which also helped her adapt to FIBA's physical style of play and perform better with UCLA. 'It was an excellent opportunity. Playing at that level helped me a lot, especially physically,' said the 6-foot guard, who looks forward to her third season with the Bruins. 'I'm extremely proud to see her play for Mexico. I hope she can continue on that path and keep growing,' Jaime said of his sister. Both players are now preparing for their respective seasons with clear goals: Jaime is looking to take the Heat further in the playoffs, while Gabriela has her sights set on a national championship with UCLA. 'The goal is to win championships with UCLA,' Gabriela said. 'We've already made it to the Final Four, and I think we have the talent to go even further.' As the Buffalo Bills prepare for the 2025 NFL season, we'll take a look at the most important contributors on their roster. They have a ton of cornerstone players who will be returning for another shot at bringing a Lombardi Trophy to Buffalo, and they'll have help from some new additions as well. Background Position: Running back Age at start of season: 25 Experience: Fourth year 2025 cap hit: $5,701,374 2024 recap James Cook was part of a revitalized rushing attack by the Bills offense in 2024. After a stellar 2023 when Cook recorded 1,567 total yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns, he followed that up with 1,267 total yards and a whopping 18 touchdowns in 2024. His 16 rushing touchdowns were tied for the most in the NFL and he made his second-consecutive Pro Bowl. However, a season with 18 touchdowns as a big-time playmaker in one of the league's best offenses led to contract demands from Cook. 2025 outlook Cook's 2025 season should be similar to his previous two productive seasons, assuming he ends his "hold-in" prior to the start of the regular season. While playing only 48% of snaps in 2024, Cook averaged nearly five yards per carry and was among the league's best at his position in finding the endzone. He'll once again be relied upon to shoulder a bulk of the carries while sharing the field with third-down specialist Ty Johnson and second-year pro Ray Davis. Biggest question: Business Perhaps the most obvious question posed in the top-30 countdown; what does the future hold for the Bills and Cook amid ongoing contract talks between the two. He's entering the final year of his rookie deal and has made it publicly known that he's looking for $15 million per season. The LA Rams and running back Kyren Williams recently agreed to a three-year, $33 million deal ($11M APY). Although the two RBs have comparable stats over the last two years, Williams is a year younger than Cook and plays about 85% of snaps for the Rams while Cook is around 50%. Cook has every right to want an extension, but $15 million or likely any number approaching that figure is probably out of range for general manager Brandon Beane.
