Probe Agency Chargesheet Against Robert Vadra In Gurugram Land Deal Case

NDTV5 days ago
New Delhi:
The Enforcement Directorate has filed a charge sheet against Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in a money laundering case linked to a land deal in Haryana's Shikohpur, official sources said on Thursday.
This is the first time that any probe agency has filed a prosecution complaint against 56-year-old Vadra in a criminal case.
Sources said the charge sheet has been filed against Vadra and some others before a local court here under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). He was questioned by the federal investigative agency for three consecutive days in April.
The probe against Vadra is linked to the land deal in Haryana's Manesar-Shikohpur (now sector 83) in Gurugram. The deal of February 2008 was done by a company named Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd, where Vadra was a director earlier, as it purchased a 3.5 acre of land in Shikohpur from Onkareshwar Properties at a price of Rs 7.5 crore.
A Congress government led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda was in power at that time. Four years later, in September 2012, the company sold the land to realty major DLF for Rs 58 crore.
The land deal got embroiled in controversy in October 2012 after IAS officer Ashok Khemka, then posted as the director general of Land Consolidation and Land Records-cum-Inspector-General of Registration of Haryana, cancelled the mutation of this categorising the transaction as violative of state consolidation act and some related procedures.
Vadra has always denied wrongdoing and has said the case was a "political vendetta" against him and his family that comprises former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
The ED is investigating Vadra in two other cases including one against UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari and a land deal in Rajasthan's Bikaner.

Riyal-life trap: Bengaluru merchant loses Rs 4.5 lakh to currency-exchange fraudsters

Bengaluru: In a stunning drama involving foreign currency, an elderly woman seeking help and sympathy, and a shocking lapse of judgment, a 42-year-old cloth-seller walked into a trap stitched together by fraudsters and was defrauded of Rs 4.5 lakh in a currency exchange deal gone awry. According to his complaint with police, Zia-ul-Haq, a resident of Shivajinagar and from Assam, sells clothes by the roadside in Indiranagar. Late June, a woman met him on the pretext of purchasing clothes. During interaction, she asked him if he knew anyone who could exchange Saudi riyals for Indian currency. When Haq informed her Shivajinagar has a foreign currency exchange office, the woman took down his number and said an aged woman staying one floor above her house had a bundle of notes and sought help in conversion. Around 9pm the same day, Haq received a call from the woman, who handed the phone to her neighbour, said to be a pourakarmika. The elderly woman claimed she had stumbled upon a packet of 1,626 Saudi riyals with 50-riyal face value while clearing the road. She claimed she was a widow, her son was mentally ill, and her two daughters didn't have much knowledge about financial matters. Haq told TOI that he informed the woman the notes might be fake. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dolly Parton, 79, Takes off Her Makeup and Leaves Us Without Words The Noodle Box Undo But she forced him to verify a few notes at the currency-exchange desk. The woman met the vendor the next day and gave him a note, which a forex dealer declared as "genuine". Initially, she offered to accompany the cloth vendor to the currency exchange shop, but beat a hasty retreat with the now-known ruse: "I'm busy with work, please help me." She pestered him with endless phone calls seeking help. "I agreed to buy the riyals for Rs 4.5 lakh. I borrowed money from my acquaintances and called the woman. She asked me to come over to her home. When I reached Nagawara bus stop on June 30, she insisted I meet her near the bus stop as a few persons fought near their house and one person was attacked with lethal weapons and police were at the spot. The woman who first visited him in Indiranagar came with a male friend. They said they would exchange the notes on the road. When I refused, they showed a bundle wrapped in cloth. Admittedly, I went completely blind for a few seconds, took the bundle without opening or examining it and handed them Rs 4.5 lakh as promised," Haq said. And the couple vanished out of sight in seconds. After returning home, Haq opened the bundle only to find newspaper cuttings. He called the woman's number, which was switched off. A senior police officer said Haq filed a complaint two weeks after the crime. A case of cheating has been registered, and efforts are on to nab them, he added.

So Near Yet 'Sofa': DRI Cracks Down On Rs 30 Crore Luxury Furniture Import Scam

Last Updated: The investigation revealed a meticulously planned operation to evade customs duties by undervaluing premium furniture sourced from top European brands In a significant recent crackdown on customs fraud, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has uncovered a massive scheme involving the import of luxury furniture using fake invoices and dummy companies. Acting on specific intelligence, DRI Mumbai officers raided several locations linked to a well-known luxury furniture brand operating across India. The investigation revealed a meticulously planned operation to evade customs duties by undervaluing premium furniture sourced from top European brands. Instead of declaring the real price, the accused routed payments through shell companies based in Dubai and Singapore. Goods were shipped directly from Europe to India but were declared as unbranded furniture at a fraction of their actual value. This clever paper trail using dummy importers and fake invoices allowed the masterminds to dodge customs duty worth Rs 30 crore. Searches were conducted at offices, warehouses, freight forwarders, and customs brokers connected to the racket. DRI officials stated that the scam involved multiple layers: shell companies abroad, local intermediaries, dummy Importer Exporter Code (IEC) holders, and fabricated paperwork. Once the furniture cleared customs, it was transferred on paper to the luxury brand's name through a proxy intermediary, but in reality, it went directly to the brand's warehouse or high-end clients. In a swift move, DRI arrested the beneficial owner of the brand, the dummy importer, and the local intermediary on July 21 and 22 under the Customs Act, 1962. Officials noted that this is not an isolated case. Just two months ago, in May, DRI uncovered a similar scam worth over Rs 20 crore, again involving luxury furniture brands using front companies to misdeclare imported goods. Such frauds significantly impact government revenue and harm honest businesses that pay their dues. A senior DRI official said, 'These operations create an unfair market for genuine importers and domestic manufacturers. We are determined to expose these networks and plug the leaks." The DRI is now investigating other shell companies, dummy IEC holders, and financial channels linked to the scam. More arrests and wider revelations are expected as the probe continues. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 03:24 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
