Chandigarh's Tribune Chowk flyover project's revised Rs 240-crore estimate gets Centre's nod

Indian Express5 days ago
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has granted in-principle approval for a revised project estimate of Rs 240 crore for the construction of the Tribune Chowk flyover, officials confirmed. The clearance came during a high-level meeting between officials from the Ministry and the Union Territory Administration held in New Delhi.
The approval allows the Chandigarh Administration to proceed with issuing a fresh tender for the project, which had been stalled for several years. According to officials, once the contract is awarded, construction is expected to take 16 to 18 months.
Originally approved by the Ministry on February 11, 2019, the Tribune Chowk project was sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 183.74 crore, and work was awarded shortly after, on February 19, 2019. The project includes the construction of a 1.6-kilometre six-lane flyover, along with a rotary and an underpass, aimed at decongesting the ever-busy Tribune intersection.
The flyover is planned to start about 200 metres after the GMCH-32 roundabout, crossing over Tribune Chowk on National Highway-5, and extending up to 300 metres beyond the existing railway overbridge on Dakshin Marg. Once completed, the elevated road is expected to significantly ease vehicular pressure at the Tribune Chowk, which currently handles a daily traffic volume of more than 1.43 lakh vehicles, including over 1.35 lakh passenger car units (PCUs).
The project, however, faced delays due to environmental concerns. In response to a petition filed by the Run Club, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had imposed a stay on the felling of nearly 700 trees required for construction along the Dakshin and Purv Marg corridors. This stay, granted on November 20, 2019, effectively stalled progress for several years. A turning point came on May 1 this year, when the High Court lifted the stay.
Following the court's green signal and taking into account updated construction rates and inflation, the UT Engineering Department submitted a revised cost estimate of Rs 245 crore to the Ministry in May. The Centre's approval of Rs 240 crore clears the way for long-awaited progress on the project.
With fresh tenders expected shortly, the Tribune Chowk flyover is now poised to move from the drawing board to execution — offering long-term traffic relief and improved connectivity between Zirakpur and Chandigarh once completed.

Lucknow property prices surge up to 25% as revised circle rates kick in

Property prices in Lucknow will see an increase of up to 25 per cent from Friday with the implementation of revised circle rates -- the minimum cost of a property to determine the stamp duty charges. Under the latest rate revision that has come after 10 years, circle rates have been increased in the range of 15-25 per cent, depending on the area and the type of the property. Circle rates in Lucknow were last revised in 2015, Assistant Inspector General of Stamps Ramesh Chand said. "The price of agricultural land has increased by 15 per cent, while the prices of land meant for housing (non-agriculture) have seen a rise of 20 per cent to 25 per cent," Chand told PTI. He further said the rates have been revised as per the potential of the particular area. As far as the quantum of percentage increase is concerned in this year's revision, it is almost the same as that of 2015, Chand said. The rates have been revised on three parameters. The first category is non-agriculture land located along roads that are less than 9 metres in width. Other properties have been classified as 'ordinary' and 'premium'. Flats or apartment complexes that house any two facilities out of swimming pool, club, gym and segment road are counted in the premium category, and the construction cost will also be applicable likewise. "The flats which do not have these facilities will come under the ordinary category," Chand explained. Premium category properties in Ashok Marg saw a revision of 25 per cent (from Rs 26,000 per sq m to Rs 32,500 per sq m), while the ordinary category property rates have been revised from Rs 24,000 per sq m to Rs 30,000 per sq m. Land under non-agriculture category located along roads with less than 9 metres of width in Ashok Marg will now be priced 10 per cent higher from Rs 30,500 per sq m to Rs 33,500 per sq m. Rates in Gulistan Colony have been increased by 29 per cent for both premium as well as ordinary categories. Indiranagar Sector-1 properties have witnessed an increase of 31 per cent in the circle rates, while those at AP Sen Road and Clay Square areas saw a hike of 29 per cent.

Cake With Words "Mummy Text With Frosting" Goes Viral, Leaves Internet In Stitches

A Reddit user's post about a dissatisfactory experience with a bakery based in Delhi-NCR recently went viral. It stemmed from a misunderstanding of the customer's instructions for what needed to be written on a cake. The resulting mistake was frustrating to the person who ordered it. However, social media users couldn't stop laughing at it. The Reddit user posted a picture of the cake with the caption, "Ordered this cake from Creme Castle. 300 grams for a whopping Rs 400, and this is what I got. Plus, the customer service is so bad." The customer also posted a picture of their bill, which showed the exact instructions they sent to the bakery while placing the order. The customer note read, "Add 'happy birthday mummy' text with frosting." Can you guess what ended up happening? The Chocolate Bento cake arrived with two flat chocolate pieces on top. One simply had the word "Mummy" written with icing. The other had the words "Text With Frosting...." on it. No happy birthday topper was visible in the photo. We don't know whether it wasn't sent in the first place or whether it was removed by the user before clicking the photo. The Reddit user also shared a screenshot of their WhatsApp chat with Creme Castle's customer care. As per the messages, the user wanted to complain about the problem, but the representative was not being helpful. The user mentioned wanting a "resolution" of the issue. The customer care team replied, "Refund or change not possible from our side." In the comments below the viral post, the user later clarified, I didn't ask for a refund. I asked for a replacement or at least for them to fix the issue. They were refusing to co-operate at all, which was frustrating." Presenting you Creme castle. by u/Kookie69420 in sharktankindia Many Reddit users found the situation rather hilarious. Some did express their sympathies with the person who posted about the issue. However, the common sentiment was that the problem could quickly be resolved by removing the second chocolate piece with the words "Text With Frosting." Read some of the reactions below: "If I get this cake, it'll be such a meme day for me." "Sorry for laughing at your situation." "I'm sorry for laughing, but this is pretty common." "Honestly, this would have made my birthday lmao. I can understand your frustration, though." "I'm so sorry, but that's just straight-up meme material, and this had actually happened to me as well once. I wanted to mention that please don't give cutlery, and 'Happy birthday baba' should be written on it. As a result, I got a cake that said 'Happy birthday baba, please don't give cutlery'." "At least they have written that text on a separate chocolate chip, so you can just remove it. Also, mummy is written there. You could add a happy birthday tag separately. I know you didn't ask for suggestions, but your cake is not "that much ruined" as you made it out to be (looking like just for a refund)." Cake blunders like this one often go viral on social media. Before this, a post about a cake ordered for a colleague's farewell at work received a lot of interest online. While placing the order, the person instructed the baker to "Please put bye on cake." The baker ended up putting the entire instruction text on the cake. Read more about this viral cake icing mistake.
