How ‘Call of Duty' Says It Is Getting More Veterans Jobs Than the U.S. Government

As Memorial Day approaches and National Military Appreciation Month comes to a close, here's a timely fact: the largest private funder of veteran employment in the United States is a video game.
Tied to Activision's long-running military game franchise 'Call of Duty,' the aptly named Call of Duty Endowment (C.O.D.E.) has placed over 150,000 veterans in jobs since 2009 and has been surpassing the federal government's placement efforts since 2022, according to the organization's president, Dan Goldenberg.

The initiative has raised $48 million through sales of special accessory packs in 'Call of Duty' games alone (one of which recently launched in collaboration with real-life vets First Sergeant Korey Staley and Captain Florent 'Flo' Groberg), in addition to other donation streams, and 'every cent of which is going to putting vets in jobs,' Goldenberg says.
'The 'Call of Duty' community has been generous. Activision, as partners, have been incredible. They've all kind of come together in this ecosystem,' Goldenberg told Variety. 'And one thing I know for sure is we've had more measurable social impact than anyone I know of in the gaming industry. I can't think of another cause where it's not so much the money raised, it's the impact out. Others may have raised more money, but we've put — including the in-game stuff and other donations and corporate partnerships — close to $100 million against this problem. And as a result, 150,000 vets have jobs, their families are more secure. Meaningful employment is just so core to so many other challenges a vet may encounter. If you have a meaningful job, you probably have health care, you have colleagues, you have purpose.'
According to C.O.D.E., it costs $628 per placement of each vet. The average starting salary for vets in these placements is $75,000, and 93% are receiving full-time placement. Goldenberg says the program has seen an 89% retention rate at six months. Additionally, 20% of the program's veterans placed are women.
Launched in 2009 by former Activision chief Bobby Kotick and co-chaired by General James L. Jones beginning in 2012, the Call of Duty Endowment started out a time when the unemployment rate for veterans 'was super high,' Goldenberg said.
'It stemmed from this very successful gaming franchise that said, 'We've gotten really big, and we owe a lot of our success to the people who inspired us. We'd like to find a good way to give back to them,'' Goldenberg said, adding that 'initially, we looked like a lot of corporate foundations writing big checks. But the difference was the discipline that had made Activision and 'Call of Duty' so successful was being applied to trying to solve a social problem here.'
C.O.D.E. is currently bracing for a higher number of unemployed veterans amid the recent job cuts across government service, a popular sector for vet placement, under the administration of President Donald Trump. But Goldenberg says the techniques the endowment already has in place — methods it has been building on through years of trial and error — will help significantly with this influx.
'A lot of it was vetting our partners, and we insisted on a return on our investment,' Goldenberg said. 'The difference was, it was a social return. We wanted to see a lot of vets put in jobs. And when we started, we were at parity. Our cost per placement was about the same as the federal government's efforts.'
And with 'consistent disciplined vetting and accountability of our grantees on a quarterly basis,' Goldenberg says the Endowment has pulled ahead.
'It works. So last year, we placed vets in jobs for 1/15th the cost of placement of the government with much higher quality outcomes in terms of average starting salary, retention rates, and the percentage of those jobs that are for full-time employment,' Goldenberg said. 'And I guess the big lesson out of it is the discipline of business can really make a big difference for social cost. That's been our unequivocal experience. We didn't go in for brands. We looked for nonprofit partners who we thought for the dollar could accomplish the most social impact, and that's what we've gotten.'
As for how the actual 'Call of Duty' video games can help vets, a study done by the Entertainment Software Association found that 86% of surveyed U.S. vets said video games provided them with a 'healthy outlet for stress and anxiety.' 'And not surprisingly, 'Call of Duty' is their favorite game,' Goldenberg says of the study's findings.
'When I've talked to friends who've been forward, when I've gone forward, you would think, and people from outside will say, 'Don't you get enough of the military thing?' And no, it's like a great way for them — especially when we were in active combat, people would come back to the forward operating bases, and they use it to decompress and have fun,' Goldenberg says.

I'm currently playing my way through Death Stranding 2 (2025), which, like previous games created by Hideo Kojima, takes heavy aim at American foreign policy. Set in a dystopia in which the world of the dead collides with the world of the living, the first game focused on a failing American government desperate to reassert its authority by reconnecting its citizens. The game ended ambiguously: was the protagonist, Sam, right to help the government regain partial control of the country? The second game takes themes from the first (e.g., human connection, freedom, technology, violence) and puts them in a global context. Death Stranding 2 is especially critical of US immigration policy and imperialism—the game revolves around 'expanding' the morally ambiguous, US-based chiral network (a sci-fi version of the internet) first into Mexico, and then Australia, with aspirations for total global expansion. While in the game the US government positions the chiral network as a boon for everyone, it's clear from the outset that it's a pretty insidious technology. Early in the game, it is revealed that the US government used braindead pregnant women from Mexico to fuel experiments on chiral networks. The babies of these women were essentially used as batteries to power American technological advancement. This plotline taps into topical debates about ethics and technology. In particular, it reminded me of a recent book by Ruha Benjamin, Imagination , that argues that US technological progress is often built on exploitation, both at home and abroad. A lot of Death Stranding 2 's not-so-subtle criticism of the US boils down to a critique of American exceptionalism—the longstanding historical idea that the US is distinct from, and superior to, other countries. While Kojima has spoken about Death Stranding 's ties to current events, the game's critique of America isn't new in the video game world. The game's plot echoes comments Kojima made about the Metal Gear franchise over ten years ago in an interview with The Guardian : 'In the past the US was the centre of the world, where everything was happening . . . I think my stories have always sought to question this, maybe even criticise it.' Kojima has always used his games to push back against Hollywood depictions of American military action as glamorous and just. But Kojima's not alone. Other games from the 2010s, including Irrational Games' Bioshock Infinite (2013) openly argued that American exceptionalism has led to acts of violence. Infinite takes place in the fictional city of Columbia. In the game world, Columbia was funded by the US government as a floating world's fair and display of American exceptionalism. Infinite is quick to reveal however, that underneath Columbia's clean streets and statues of the founding fathers, lies an infrastructure built on class oppression and racism. Toward the beginning of Infinite , the game interrupts the player's stroll through patriotic fairgrounds to reveal a mob about to murder an interracial couple. Like Death Stranding 2 's revelations about the insidious origins of the chiral network, Infinite portrays American greatness (progress, technology, wealth) as stemming from exploitation. Games like Red Dead 2 and Fallout 3 also criticize American military violence, though arguably in slightly less heavy handed ways than Infinite and DS . American exceptionalism is a polarizing topic—one still relevant to American politics and social life. The phrase 'American exceptionalism' is being used in diverse conversations ranging from how the US should establish AI dominance over other countries to how librarians, researchers, and artists should positively valorize American history for the upcoming 250-year anniversary of America. While video games offer a unique medium for exploring ideas about American politics, I'm skeptical about whether games like Death Stranding and Infinite actually persuade players to change their opinions about American imperialism, exceptionalism, or military violence. Story wise these games are eager to critique themes like gun violence and imperialism. I often find these stories moving and compelling: it's hard not to feel for the characters in Death Stranding who are caught up in endless cycles of violence and trauma, victimized by a government that should be protecting them. But, at the end of the day, a lot of the 'fun' of playing games like Death Stranding and Infinite comes from shooting things, conquering territories, and leveling up the arsenal. I'm enjoying DS 2 's story and gameplay, but there's an at times awkward tension between the message the game is desperately trying to get across, and the entertaining experience of gameplay. This tension is more pronounced in Death Stranding 2 than in the original , despite the sequel's overt political arguments.

The ‘Battlefield 6' Open Beta Is Over, Here's When Weekend 2 Starts And What To Expect

The first weekend of the Battlefield 6 open beta has come and gone. I played quite a bit, and I can honestly say this is the most fun I've had with this franchise since Battlefield 1. It feels like an updated version of Battlefield 3, with modern movement and controls. It plays a bit faster, though not at the frenetic pace of Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 and its omnimovement system. I've enjoyed most of what I've played in the beta, though I find the menus to be quite horrible and confusing to navigate. I don't understand why we need tiles in all the games these days. Games are better when the menu is simple, where different modes and destinations are clearly labeled and easy to find and click on. Call Of Duty has had terrible menus over the past few games and Battlefield seems hellbent on upstaging them with an even worse, even more confounding menus. I've also experienced at least one really frustrating bug. In the middle of several matches, my gun and arms simply disappear. I can no longer see the weapon I'm carrying. Aiming-down-sights removes all crosshairs, which makes accuracy significantly more challenging. It's impossible to see when you've reloaded and you have to check the bottom right-hand corner of the screen to make sure you have the right gun or item equipped. Other than that, the game has run pretty well other than some party-related snafus, like trying to leave to the menu but some players in the party remain in the previous match end-screen. In Weekend 1, we got to play on three different maps across five different modes: The massive Conquest mode, the stage-based Breakthrough mode, Domination, King Of The Hill and Closed Conquest, which limits guns by class. I enjoyed all three maps, but the Liberation Peak one showed up far less often in rotation, so mostly the maps I played on were dense, urban maps with a pretty similar aesthetic. Gunplay was quite good, thankfully, and once I'd warmed up to the game (having not played much Battlefield in years) and shaken some of my Call Of Duty habits, I was having a blast and doing quite well. I love the variety between classes and all the guns feel really solid so far. I also love the new 'drag and revive' mechanic, which is such a small but fun little change. I've noticed the prone system now mimics Black Ops 6's prone mechanic, allowing players to roll over from their stomach onto their back rather than just move side to side or in circles on the ground. Here's what you need to know about the second beta weekend. Thankfully, we don't have long to wait for the next beta weekend. Here's when it runs: Open Beta Weekend 2 – Thursday, August 14th - Monday, August 18th I earned all the first weekend's freebies and rewards (which you can't actually use until the game launches) and there are a few more to earn next weekend: In Weekend 1 we got to play the maps Siege Of Cairo, Liberation Peak and Iberian Offensive. In Weekend 2 we go to America in Empire State, which takes place on the streets of Brooklyn, NY. On top of the modes we've played so far, we get Rush and Deathmatch, though it's possible they'll surprise us with bonus maps and modes as well. In Rush, a team of attackers and defenders battle for control of a series of Military Communication systems. Attackers plant explosives at each point, while defenders try to diffuse. It's not more like Demolition in Call Of Duty than Search and Destroy, though neither is as close to those modes as Domination is to, well, Domination and King of the Hill is to Hardpoint. Expect to see some tuning between betas, including possible changes to classes and class abilities, though it's more likely that the bulk of fixes and updates will take place after the second beta weekend in the lead-up to launch (and plenty more after launch).
