Saps vehicle repairs stall crime prevention in Gauteng, says DA
A severe shortage of mechanics at Gauteng's South African Police Service (Saps) garages is hampering police visibility and crime prevention efforts across the province.
According to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi's written response to the questions posed in the Provincial Legislature, 110 mechanic posts remain unfilled at Saps vehicle workshops.
DA Gauteng shadow MEC for community safety, Crezane Bosch, said that the unfilled posts result in long delays in repairing police vehicles.
'Vehicles often remain in garages without repairs for up to a year, leading to shortages of vehicles at our police stations.
262 positions filled
Lesufi said the legislature confirmed that of the 372 mechanic positions across Saps garages in the province, only 262 are currently filled.
Bosch said this situation could have been avoided if the vacancies were filled and the garages properly staffed.
'This is unacceptable and shows that the Lesufi-led government is not prioritising the protection of the people of Gauteng or addressing unemployment.'
Bosch said the impact of the shortage is being felt on the ground, where police stations are left with few or no operational vehicles.
'The lack of vehicles directly undermines crime-fighting efforts and increases risks for our residents,' she said.

Call for urgent intervention
Additionally, the DA member noted that families could have been fed if these vacant posts had been advertised, giving qualified individuals the opportunity to apply.
'There is no justification for leaving essential positions unfilled, especially when thousands of qualified individuals are unemployed and desperate for work,' Bosch said.
The party says a DA-led provincial government would have prioritised filling the vacancies, improving operational capacity and creating job opportunities.
'This approach would not only strengthen law enforcement but also create valuable job opportunities for qualified mechanics,' she added.
Bosch further criticised the Lesufi administration for failing at 'the most basic tasks' while touting high-tech initiatives like intelligent number plates.
'The people of Gauteng need functioning police vehicles before they can trust futuristic security plans,' she said.

A group of unknown suspects broke the window of their car with bricks and brutally assaulted Cameron and his colleagues. The quick-thinking Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson retaliated with his own firearm, firing shots at the suspects. A bloodied Cameron suffered broken teeth and required facial stitches. His colleagues sustained minor head and neck injuries. Ian Cameron believes that it was a targeted attack on himself. He posted on his X account: 'This was a serious and deliberate attack, and it underscores the risks faced during oversight work. But incidents like this will not deter us. We remain determined to carry out our responsibility to ensure accountability and safety. ADVERTISEMENT According to authorities, the motive for the attack is not yet known. 'OUT OF CONTROL CRIME' The DA condemned the attack, calling on police to increase their presence in high-crime areas. The party's Chief Whip, George Michalakis, told IOL: 'This incident is a portrayal of the out-of-control crime that South Africans face daily. No one is exempt from it. HELEN ZILLE'S NARROW ESCAPE Ian Cameron isn't the only DA member to fall victim to a brutal attack. In 2003, Helen Zille narrowly escaped death when her Corsa was shot at in an attempted hijacking in Khayelitsha. At the time of the attack, Helen was driving home one evening after doing constituency work in the informal settlement. Philippi smash-and-grab: DA MPs recount terrifying attack

Portfolio Committee on Police Chairperson Ian Cameron, together with colleagues Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell, were travelling near the intersection of New Eisleben and Govan Mbeki Roads when unknown suspects broke the windows of their vehicle and began throwing bricks at them. Cameron described the attack as 'horrific'. He recounted: 'They threw bricks at the vehicle. I managed to hit one of them, but they kept coming back. I tried fighting back, and when I looked at Nicholas, his body was on his lap. I took out my gun and shot. I am not sure if I hit anyone. Cameron said he acted quickly and in self-defence to prevent further harm to his colleagues. The DA condemned the attack and reiterated the urgent need for improved policing in high-crime areas. DA Chief Whip George Michalakis said: 'This incident is a portrayal of the out-of-control crime that South Africans face daily. No one is exempt from it. We again call on the Minister of Police to properly resource SAPS in crime-ridden areas such as Philippi.' Michalakis praised the prompt response of the City of Cape Town Metro, the provincial government, police, and emergency medical services, highlighting that their quick intervention helped prevent further harm to the MPs. Western Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile confirmed that police received a report of the attack and that two people were injured. 'The ambulance was called at the scene. Our teams will get to the bottom of it,' he said. 'In most smash-and-grab incidents, the motive is robbery, hijacking, or theft out of a motor vehicle. At this stage, we do not know what was stolen.' Community leaders condemned the attack. Dumisani Qwebe called it a 'wake-up call' and urged anyone with information to come forward. He noted that the area usually has police visibility and CCTV coverage, which may assist in identifying the suspects. 'That intersection was not so bad, and we are surprised because there is always police visibility, and now we must make sure that it is always monitored. 'There is a CCTV camera, and hopefully we will find something from it.' The DA reiterated that policing is a national function and stressed that adequate resourcing of police stations in crime-ridden communities is vital to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of all South Africans.

Here is a leader who has stumbled from one embarrassing crisis to another, fumbling the ball, seemingly fiddling while Pretoria burns. Most infamous among Ramaphosa's foibles was his handling of the break-in at his Phala Phala home, a scandal for which he has so far escaped accountability. We've never gotten to the bottom of the hundreds of thousands of dollars stashed in couches and other furniture that adorn his Limpopo game farm, with investigations and reports into the matter either conveniently clearing the president of any wrongdoing, or having had their adoption and public release blocked by political machinery. I assume one of the shady deals made to include the DA in the Government of National Collusion– erm, Unity was for the centre-right party to drop the matter. But it's not just Phala Phala that taints Cyril's "legacy" – his complicity in the 2012 Marikana Massacre prior to him taking up the highest office in the land is another thing he's never faced the music for. Now, as South Africa's president, Cyril Ramaphosa has fallen asleep at the wheel. Ramaphosa's military chief, General Rudzani Maphwanya goes on an ostensibly unsanctioned visit to Iran to meet his army counterpart, placing further strain on tensions between the US and South Africa. The visit was a clear disjunct with South Africa's foreign policy. Did Ramaphosa not know General Maphwanya was visiting Iran? Does the president not receive a daily security briefing? Also in July, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, KZN Police Commissioner, held a press briefing dressed in Special Task Force fatigues, dropping bomb shells about corruption and interference in police investigations at the highest level of SAPS management, right up to the Police Minister. All this happens on Ramaphosa's watch, and he does... nothing? Does he even know what's going on? Ramaphosa admitted in April 2022 to the commission investigating the 2021 civil unrest and riots that cost the South African economy R50 billion (with a "B), that there was a failure of Crime Intelligence leading up those eight fateful days in July. Riots that happened on his watch. Surely such a failure would not be allowed to repeat itself by our Commander-in-Chief? Nope, fast forward to July 2025 and we have vigilante group March and March actively preventing South African citizens from entering public healthcare facilities, in full view of the police, emboldened by the fact that some of them—whose actions are illegal and resulted in their arrest—were let off with a warning. March and March continues to operate illegally, demanding people present ID documents to enter public healthcare facilities. The security cluster is "monitoring the situation", while the Commander-in-Chief holds a National Dialogue costing the country millions.
