Mumbai doctors warn of surge in leptospirosis cases after 2 days of heavy rainfall

Time of India5 hours ago
Mumbai: As heavy rainfall brought the city to a standstill for two consecutive days, doctors are warning of a potential rise in leptospirosis cases. The infection spreads through water contaminated with animal urine in waterlogged areas.
It can enter the body through small cuts or abrasions as people wade through flooded streets often to reach their workplaces or homes.
The city, which reports a high burden of leptospirosis every monsoon, recorded 143 cases in July. In August alone, BMC data shows that 72 cases have already been reported. When left untreated, the infection can spiral out of control quickly. Among those diagnosed this month was the 21-year-old daughter of Prakash Gaonkar, a taxi driver from Reay Road.
She was hospitalised for a week after developing acute respiratory distress syndrome due to leptospirosis.

She suffered kidney injury and severe breathlessness as a result of her condition. The family spent about Rs 2.5 lakh at a private hospital to save her life. "She had some cuts on her feet through which she was infected. I appeal to everyone not to ignore even a mild fever after heavy rains," said Gaonkar.
Year after year, though, doctors continue to witness such cases.

Dr Anuj Tiwari, a physician at Cooper Hospital, said the problem with most monsoon illnesses is that their symptoms overlap. "Patients mistake their condition for something mild and delay treatment until it becomes worse. We have seen very severe cases, even fatalities because of lepto," he said.
Dr Anita Mathews, an infectious disease specialist at Fortis Hospital in Mulund, said while most leptospirosis patients show mild symptoms, the 1% to 2% who develop severe disease can still turn out to be a large number when infections are widespread.
She added that even without cuts, prolonged exposure to contaminated water can be enough for transmission, as skin becomes vulnerable when it softens and shrivels.
There are ways to prevent it soon after exposure. Community health workers under the BMC distribute post-exposure prophylaxis, doxycycline, in waterlogged areas as soon as the storm passes. A community health volunteer in Bandra told TOI this could not be done as widespread due to continuous heavy rains and waterlogging on Tuesday but will be taken up the next day.
Dr Preeti Chhabria, director of the department of medicine at H N Reliance Hospital, added the benefits of doxycycline far outweigh risks such as antibiotic resistance. "Prolonged and frequent consumption can be a problem but in such instances, it is much needed," she said.

Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, the minister for urban administration, Kailash Vijayvargiya, said, "This is a major achievement of our govt. The colleges will be funded under the National AYUSH Mission, with an allocation of Rs 70 crore for each ayurvedic college, totalling Rs 350 crore, to be paid in a 60:40 ratio between the Centre and the state. The scholarships, based on student attendance, currently stand at Rs 1,650 per month for boys and Rs 1,700 per month for girls. The council of ministers approved the 'Geeta Bhavan' scheme to promote reading, cultural and literary activities, and provide well-equipped study centres in urban local bodies. "Chief Minister Mohan Yadav wants one Geeta Bhavan to be established in every district, which we want to be completed in the next five years," Kailash Vijayvargiya claimed. The scheme will run from 2025-26 to 2029-30. The state govt will provide financial support for the construction, expansion, and maintenance of 'Geeta Bhavans'. On Tuesday, the cabinet decided to complete the liquidation of Morena Division Cooperative Sugar Factory, Kailaras, and transfer its 22.34 hectares of land to the govt. The factory will be handed over to the MSME department for the development of employment-based industries in Morena district. Plant and machinery will be sold through a transparent process by the Department of Public Asset Management, the state govt said. The sugar factory, registered in 1965, remained non-functional due to irrigation issues, a shortage of sugarcane, and managerial reasons, and was closed since 2008-09 with accumulated liabilities of Rs 54.81 crore. Delhi govt hikes stipend of nursing interns to ₹13,150: Officials

The Delhi government on Tuesday approved a hike in the monthly stipend of government hospital nursing interns from Rs 500 to Rs 13,150 in the first revision in 27 years, officials said on Tuesday. The decision, taken in a cabinet meeting, will benefit nearly 180 nursing interns from the three nursing colleges attached to the Delhi government's Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Lok Nayak Hospital, and Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, a health department official told PTI. Health Minister Pankaj Singh said the revision addresses a long-pending demand of nursing students and aims to provide them parity with MBBS interns. "For 27 years, this issue was ignored. By raising the stipend to Rs 13,150, we are ensuring that nursing interns receive the dignity, respect and support they deserve," he said. He also said that the government expects the hike to improve the morale of students, provide them the financial stability during their training, and strengthen the city's healthcare workforce. A government note said, "Earlier governments ignored this issue for nearly three decades, but under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, our government has resolved this disparity." It added, "With this increased stipend, we are ensuring respect and dignity for nursing interns.
