The Ministry of Defence on Sunday cautioned that a "misleading" message is doing the rounds on WhatsApp claiming that the government has opened a bank account seeking donation for modernisation of the Indian Army. In a statement, the ministry debunked the message and urged people to "remain cautious and not fall prey to such fraudulent messages"."There is a misleading message doing the rounds on WhatsApp pertaining to donation to a particular bank account for the modernisation of the Indian Army and for the soldiers injured or killed in action," the statement said.The message being circulated erroneously quotes a "Cabinet decision" to this effect and invokes the name of actor Akshay Kumar as being the "prime mover" of the proposal, the ministry flagged."The account details in the said message are wrong, leading to online donations getting dishonoured," it said.The ministry said the government has "initiated several welfare schemes for soldiers killed or disabled during active combat operations"."In 2020, the government instituted 'Armed Forces Battle Casualty Welfare Fund' which is utilised for grant of immediate financial assistance to the families of soldiers/sailors/airmen who lay down their lives or get grievously injured in active military operations," it said.The Indian Army, on behalf of the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare, Ministry of Defence maintains the accounts for the fund. Contribution can be made directly in the account of Armed Forces Battle Casualties Welfare Fund, it added.The PIB Fact Check also alerted people about this "misleading" message with a post on X."A WhatsApp message is going around claiming that government has opened a bank account for the modernization of the Indian Army. #PIBFactCheck This claim is MISLEADING. Historic T-55 tank ‘Shivashakti' now in Ranebennur
The historic T-55 war tank 'Shivashakti', which was used in the historic Indo-Pak war for Bangladesh liberation will now be on public display in Ranebennur of Haveri district. The historic tank will now be on display permanently before the Mini Vidhana Soudha in Ranebennur, thanks to the interest taken by Ranebennur MLA Prakash Koliwad. During the Independence Day celebration on Friday, Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly U.T. Khader unveiled the tank. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prakash Koliwad said: 'The display of the war tank is a way of honouring the brave soldiers, who led the tank in the war field. It is also aimed at inspiring the youngsters and sensitising them about country's military power'. Speaker U.T. Khader termed the installation of the tank at Ranebennur as a matter of pride for the whole State. 'It inspires the younger generation to know more about the history our military and take pride in it'. He also called on everyone to understand the history and be patriotic and contribute towards nation building. History During the Indo-Pak war in 1965, the necessity of armored fighting vehicles was felt by the Indian Army. Therefore, the Indian government approached European countries for the supply of battle tanks. The T-55 tank was procured during the period 1966-77. It was the main battle tank at that period of time and as per the prevailing policy, it was to have a life of 15 years with one mid-life overhaul. This T55 tank was procured from Russia during the war between Indo-Pak for Bangla liberation in 1971, named Shivashakti and it helped army men to succeed in their mission and to achieve victory. Shivashakti belongs to assault regiment of Indian Army and has been procured from the Central Army Fighting Vehicle Depot at Kirkee in Pune (Maharashtra). The tank has been installed in Ranebennur utilising ₹15 lakh released from the MLA's local area development fund and ₹9.85 lakh from the municipal grants.

DYFI protests against sangh leaders tying rakhi in anganwadis
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Alleging that BJP and RSS leaders tied rakhi to students of 11 anganwadis as part of Independence Day celebrations, DYFI leaders protested before the Varkala Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) office on Saturday. According to DYFI leaders, close to 25 protesters were arrested and later released. The issue began when photos of BJP leaders tying rakhi in the hands of anganwadi children surfaced on social media. "The CDPO had instructed the teachers through a WhatsApp voice note that rakhis should be tied to the students as part of the August 15 celebrations. The rakhis, similar to those worn by Sangh affiliates, were tied to the hands of the children," DYFI leader Lenin Raj told the TNIE. Adding that children too might have tied rakhis amongst themselves, he stated that DYFI sees this as an extension of RSS saffronisation propaganda. However, the CDPO refuted these allegations. "My instruction was to tie tricolour-themed rakhis to children, that too because many of them loved making them, and urged to wear one," she told the TNIE. Mentioning that the BJP leaders who tied these rakhis were the ward councillors, she said that she had no political interests in the issue. On the other hand, BJP leaders of Varkala have refused to comment on the controversy. On August 8, a directive was sent from the central government to initiate students to make rakhis based on the theme of the Indian National Flag, Lenin said. The youth organisation has also sent a letter to the District Child Development Officer (CPDO), Minister of Social Justice, and the Chief Minister, urging immediate action.
