Vikings report for camp realizing the hard work required to better a 14-win season

CBS News23-07-2025
The Minnesota Vikings were just hours into their offseason, eliminated from the playoffs with a lopsided loss, when Jonathan Greenard was moved to challenge himself and his teammates to embrace the hard work of trying to better a 14-4 record and avoid another one-and-done.
"More is required," the veteran edge rusher posted on social media.
Three months later, Greenard's spontaneous slogan turned into a T-shirt. The motivational swag was waiting for every player at his locker upon arrival for the start of strength and conditioning sessions in the spring.
"You can only control your individual effort, and as long as you do that, you're going to pull somebody else and they're going to see that and it's going to be infectious for the whole team, the whole building," Greenard said earlier in the offseason, explaining the purpose of spreading the word beyond a simple tweet.
The mantra has resonated throughout a well-regarded organization that will again field a well-built roster in 2025 but still faces questions about its viability as a championship contender.
The Vikings, of course, are one of the few NFL teams that have existed for the entire Super Bowl era but never won one.
"Because clearly that scale hasn't been tipped for us," right tackle Brian O'Neill said, "and we need to find a way to make that happen."
As players reported to training camp this week, coach Kevin O'Connell turned up the volume on the messaging. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and O'Connell each signed contract extensions during the offseason, keeping their job statuses in sync as they embark on their fourth year together while also raising the bar for expectations. The Vikings have not won a playoff game since they arrived, a drought going back to the 2019 season.
"We feel proud of some of the things we've accomplished, but at the same time I think it's time for all of us to continue to look inward first," O'Connell said Tuesday at a joint news conference with Adofo-Mensah to formally kick off the season. "It's time for us to acknowledge what we're actually trying to build here, and what that's going to take is — in my opinion — an invisible presence of understanding that we're capable but we've got to put in a lot of work to feel totally worthy in those moments to get to where we want to get to."
The Vikings started only two players on the physically unable to perform list: tight end Gavin Bartholomew (back), their sixth-round draft pick, and linebacker Chaz Chambliss (foot), an undrafted rookie.
That means left tackle Christian Darrisaw, who's recovering from reconstructive knee surgery after tearing his ACL last year, and new right guard Will Fries, whose 2024 season with the Indianapolis Colts ended early because of a broken leg, are right on track. O'Connell said both players would likely be limited to individual drills at the beginning of training camp to complete the ramping-up process, but the likelihood of having both key blockers ready for Week 1 is a vital boost for quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
Wide receiver Jordan Addison last week pleaded guilty to a lesser charge that resolved his 2024 drunken driving citation, clearing the way for potential discipline from the league. Adofo-Mensah said the Vikings have not been given an indication about the timing of such a decision.
"Obviously, when that originally happened, we knew that it was a possibility, but really you're talking about team building in general: You might not have players on the field for various reasons, and you've always got to be ready with depth," Adofo-Mensah said.

Travis and Jason Kelce's dad's partner Maureen Maguire dead at 74

NEW YORK — The Kelce family is mourning the loss of Maureen Anne Maguire, who was the girlfriend of Travis and Jason Kelce's father, Ed. The dad of the NFL stars confirmed the news over the weekend, sharing an obituary to his Facebook page that revealed she 'passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones' and described her as a 'devoted mother.' 'Maureen found joy in life's simple pleasures,' the post read. 'She loved the beach, especially the shore, and had a deep affection for dogs.' The obituary also said that Maguire developed a love for football and prioritized 'every opportunity to enjoy life.' 'She also grew an unexpected love for football later in life, sharing many laughs and adventures with her beloved friend Ed Kelce and her loyal dog Butch,' the obituary continued. 'Together, they traveled often and attended football games and concerts, and embraced every opportunity to enjoy life to the fullest.' In an interview with Los Angeles Times, Ed shared that Maguire was also getting to know his son Travis' girlfriend, Taylor Swift. The father of two uploaded a sweet photo of himself, Maguire, and Swift all smiles while at a Kansas City Chiefs game supporting the star tight end. Maguire's obituary included funeral details as well a request that people donate to the Penn Heart Transplant Fund, which 'provides support to individuals in financial need receiving heart transplants.' Maguire's cause of death was not shared. She is survived by her three children, six grandchildren, and her sister and brother. ____

Moore League media day: New stadiums, new coaches, new aspirations

It was perfect timing on Monday for the Moore League to hold its first football media day, considering that five of the seven head coaches are new and the host school, Long Beach Jordan, is opening its new stadium next week. Alfred Rowe (Long Beach Jordan), Mario Morales (Lakewood), Justin Utupo (Long Beach Poly), Raudric Curtis (Long Beach Wilson) and Malcolm Manuel (Long Beach Cabrillo) all promised to lead their respective programs to success through passion and determination. The two returning coaches, Romeo Pellum (Long Beach Millikan) and Calvin Bryant (Compton), offered similar commitments. "Just having a new stadium and changing the culture, it's exciting," said Rowe, who went to Long Beach Poly and played for Pete Carroll at USC. "The most important thing is effort. Our goal is nobody is going to outplay us." Compton has a new stadium and a new $225-million, 31-acre campus. Bryant spent five years having his students attend a former middle school. "Our guys are fired up," Bryant said. "I can't get them to go home." They love their weight room. They love their classrooms. The team went 3-7 last season but could be one of the most improved. They just added All-City running back Edward Rivera from South East. Five of the seven head coaches are Black, reinforcing the diversity of the schools they represent. "The coaches and leaders look like their players," Lakewood's Morales said. Curtis played at Pomona-Pitzer and is a former head coach at Bellflower and was an assistant at Mayfair. "Wilson is not going to be edged out any longer," he vowed. "We're not going to take a back seat any longer." There were big-time players in attendance, including 6-foot-4, 220-pound tight end Jude Nelson of Long Beach Millikan. He's bigger now than his brother, quarterback Malachi Nelson. "I can beat him up a little," he joked. Poly brought quarterback Deuce Jefferson (Weber State), cornerback Donte Wright Jr. (Georgia), tight end Jaden Hernandez (Colorado State), among others. Lineman Anthony Rodriguez certainly looked like he has spent the offseason in the weight room. He's 6-5, 280 pounds, down 20 pounds from last season. Committed to UC Davis, he said, "I'm way leaner. I'm still chunky but thick." Wilson has 6-5 quarterback Mack Cooper, a three-year starter. Lakewood turns to three-year starter Tiwan Jones in the secondary. One of the most intriguing players is 6-4 junior quarterback Sama'Jay Jackson of Jordan. He was an all-league basketball player. He's returning to football for the first time since he gave up the sport in 2020 when the pandemic struck. He's fast, running a 4.6-second 40-yard dash. Millikan is opening its season next weekend in Nevada playing Foothill in Henderson. Sign up for the L.A.
