DEO starts crackdown on unauthorised private schools in Ludhiana
The district education officer (DEO, elementary) Ravinder Kaur along with inspection team, launched a checking drive across private schools running in the area. The focus on day one was schools operating without registration under either the RTE Act or the UDISE survey.
The team first inspected two such schools—Sarthak Academy (with total of 96 students) and Future Builder School (with total of 20 students)—located on Tibba Road in Shera Colony and found both institutions running without proper authorisation. Sarthak Academy has been operating for nearly four years, while Future Builder School has been functional for about a year.
The inspection also revealed that none of the teaching staff in either school are professionally trained.
DEO revealed that as per directions by the Punjab education department, all private schools operating across the district will undergo strict inspections by a team. A six-member inspection committee has been formed, with the DEO serving as its chairperson. The team also includes block primary officers (BPOs) and other key members.
As per the guidelines, all schools must strictly follow the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, and the Punjab State RTE Rules, 2011. Schools have been instructed to keep their documents ready for verification. These include building safety certificates, fire safety clearance, certificates for clean drinking water, sanitation reports and documents related to safe school transport policies. In addition, records of other basic facilities provided to students must also be available. All these documents must be presented as certified copies at the time of inspection so that the teams can compile accurate reports and submit them to the state government on time.
'Sarthak Academy, which has been conducting classes in one hall, has been issued a notice, and they have been given two days to explain why the school was being run without proper registration,' said Kaur.
She added that action is also being taken for Future Builder School, where around 20 children were found studying in poor conditions. 'I have asked teachers from the nearby government school in Subhash Nagar to enrol these students. Government schools offer better facilities and parents should prefer them over such small, unauthorised institutions,' she emphasised.
More inspections are expected in the coming days.

Major sex racket busted at Udaipur resort, 29 arrested
Udaipur: Police, Sunday, busted a major sex racket operating under the guise of an 'event' at a private resort on the outskirts of the city. A total of 29 people, including 14 women and 15 men, were arrested on the spot. Acting on the directives of SP Yogesh Goyal to crack down on unethical activities and prostitution, a special team was formed under additional SP Umesh Ojha, led by CO West Kailash Chandra and Sukher SHO Ravindra Charan. Police received a tip-off about organised prostitution at the resort, where women were allegedly brought in from outside and engaged in sex work in exchange for money. To verify the information, a team member posed as a customer and approached the resort operator, who agreed to provide women under the pretext of an 'event. ' Once the deal was confirmed, police raided the resort and caught all 29 individuals involved. The arrested include 15 male customers and 14 women engaged in prostitution. Preliminary investigation revealed that individuals from multiple states were part of the racket, suggesting an interstate network. The men hailed from Gujarat's Bhavnagar, Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, and Amreli, while the women were from Delhi, Haryana, Neemuch and Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan's Jaipur and Kota. All the accused have been booked under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. Further investigations are underway to identify the key operators and trace the full extent of the network.

Telangana high court to take up bail plea of mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy today
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court will on Tuesday decide the bail plea of mining baron and Karnataka MLA Gali Janardhan Reddy who was sentenced to seven years along with three others in the illegal Obulapuram mining case recently. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On Monday, Justice K Lakshman heard arguments in the bail petitions of Gali, Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) MD BV Srinivas Reddy and two others, and reserved his orders for Tuesday. Senior counsel S Nagamuthu argued the case of Gali and urged the court to suspend the sentence and release him on bail. While Srinivas Reddy's counsel Pappu Nageswara Rao, citing judgments of the Supreme Court, said that convicts who have served half of their term could be released on bail. In the current case, both Gali and Srinivas Reddy have served more than three and a half years of jail term as remand prisoners prior to their conviction. The lawyers said the case entrusted to CBI was about alleged illegal mining beyond leasehold areas and transgression of state borders, which finds no mention in its charge sheet, while the case against them was about violation of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act – which was not dealt with by the probe agency. They also pointed out that when those named as principal offenders – former mines minister Sabita Indra Reddy and former industries secretary Kripanandam – were acquitted, how can those charged with conspiracy be convicted? Opposing the bail pleas, CBI counsel Srinivas Kapatia said the convicts could not show any compelling circumstance that warrants interference by the court. The judge said he would only look at the bail pleas for now and made it clear that their main appeals will be heard from Aug 11. HC to take up Srilakshmi acquittal issue The judge, during the hearing, directed the registry to list before him the case of former industries secretary Y Srilakshmi (who succeeded Kripanandam). The high court had earlier discharged her from the case, but CBI had appealed in SC which directed the HC to hear the CBI version also before arriving at a conclusion. CBI made out a case that the HC had not heard their version before allowing Srilakshmi's plea. The judge said he would decide the issue before the expiry of a three-month deadline fixed by the apex court and directed the CBI to file its counter.
