DEO starts crackdown on unauthorised private schools in Ludhiana
The district education officer (DEO, elementary) Ravinder Kaur along with inspection team, launched a checking drive across private schools running in the area. The focus on day one was schools operating without registration under either the RTE Act or the UDISE survey.
The team first inspected two such schools—Sarthak Academy (with total of 96 students) and Future Builder School (with total of 20 students)—located on Tibba Road in Shera Colony and found both institutions running without proper authorisation. Sarthak Academy has been operating for nearly four years, while Future Builder School has been functional for about a year.
The inspection also revealed that none of the teaching staff in either school are professionally trained.
DEO revealed that as per directions by the Punjab education department, all private schools operating across the district will undergo strict inspections by a team. A six-member inspection committee has been formed, with the DEO serving as its chairperson. The team also includes block primary officers (BPOs) and other key members.
As per the guidelines, all schools must strictly follow the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, and the Punjab State RTE Rules, 2011. Schools have been instructed to keep their documents ready for verification. These include building safety certificates, fire safety clearance, certificates for clean drinking water, sanitation reports and documents related to safe school transport policies. In addition, records of other basic facilities provided to students must also be available. All these documents must be presented as certified copies at the time of inspection so that the teams can compile accurate reports and submit them to the state government on time.
'Sarthak Academy, which has been conducting classes in one hall, has been issued a notice, and they have been given two days to explain why the school was being run without proper registration,' said Kaur.
She added that action is also being taken for Future Builder School, where around 20 children were found studying in poor conditions. 'I have asked teachers from the nearby government school in Subhash Nagar to enrol these students. Government schools offer better facilities and parents should prefer them over such small, unauthorised institutions,' she emphasised.
More inspections are expected in the coming days.

Five try to strangle co-inmate at Yerawada observation home
Pune: The Yerawada police on Wednesday registered a case against five juveniles, aged 14-17, residing at the Jawaharlal Nehru observation home for allegedly attempting to strangle a 17-year-old fellow inmate on Tuesday morning after he asked them to clean the toilet. Officer in charge of the observation home Santosh Kumbhar stated in his complaint that the assailants kicked and punched the victim before tearing a towel and using it to strangle him. Senior inspector Ravindra Shelke said, "All the five inmates, charged with attempted murder, were detained for cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and body offences. The victim too is involved in a case of body offence. They have been staying in the observation home for almost six months." He said, "The victim would order inmates to clean the toilets, which he used regularly. He would get the inmates do other tasks, which disturbed the assailants." According to the police, the juveniles then came together and plotted a conspiracy against him. "They called the victim to the washroom area from his barrack, where there is no CCTV surveillance. They kicked and punched him. They then made a rope by cutting the edges of the towel and tried to strangle him with it. After hearing the victim's screams, the caretakers and other staffers rushed and rescued him," Shelke said. "The victim was released from the observation home on Thursday after the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) granted him bail," he said. "We will not detain them in the case. We will make a report on the case about them and produce it before JJB. The inmates will continue to stay in the observation home," Shelke added. Two men stripped, beaten over suspicion of theft
Surat: In a disturbing case of vigilante violence, four textile traders from Surat's Anmol Market have been booked for allegedly stripping and brutally assaulting two labourers on suspicion of theft. The victims were forcibly confined inside a shop, stripped naked, and beaten with sticks while the accused filmed the abuse. The incident came to light after one of the victims, Jitu Vagh, a textile labourer and part-time auto-rickshaw driver, filed a police complaint. Vagh told police that on June 10, he had gone to Ring Road in search of work at various textile markets. While chatting with his friend Raj alias Sontiya near the Shri Dholi Sati Textile market, they were suddenly accosted by four traders who began hurling abuses and assaulting them without explanation. The traders, identified as Vaibhav Bhalotiya, Nitish Ketiya, Ravi Jaipuriya, and an unidentified associate, allegedly dragged the duo into a shop named Nandini Creation, shut the shutters, and proceeded to strip and thrash them. The victims were allegedly forced to falsely confess to theft and were warned never to return to the market. During the assault, Vagh sustained a fractured hand. The entire incident was recorded on video by the accused themselves. Police swung into action after the footage went viral on social media. "We will not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands. No one has the right to violate another person's dignity or human rights," said Salabatpura police inspector K D Jadeja. The police have registered the case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 115(2), 117(2), 127(2), 351(3), 352, and 54, as well as relevant provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
