
With Aurora's rapid growth, the need for fire stations in the Colorado city is greater
Yet what isn't in the development yet is a fire station -- the closest one is about 15 minutes away. It's a concern for Aurora Fire Rescue as well as the city as it looks for ways to expand and respond in a rapidly growing Colorado community.
"This is a great example of a modern fire station," said AFR Chief Alec Oughton as he gave CBS Colorado's Kelly Werthmann a tour of Station 16, located near Gaylord of the Rockies. "If you look at the amount of space that we've got in this bay, this is huge."
Station 16 is one of the newest and largest in the department, and Oughton is happy to show off its modern features.
"When we start talking about modern fire stations, we're talking about programming that protects our assets," he said.
About 50% larger than most older fire stations, Station 16 is built to house more fire engines, trucks and equipment crews need to respond to emergencies. Oughton also explained how it is better designed to meet the health and safety needs of firefighters who call the station home.
"We're asking them to live here a third of their lives. So think about that -- in a 30-year career, 10 are spent in the fire house," he said.
From individual bunk rooms to improved wellness and training spaces, the modern-day fire station is an example -- says Oughton -- of what's greatly needed in Aurora's new developments.
"We've got four fire stations that we've got planned in the next 10 years," he said. "Aurora Highlands is a top priority, Southshore Blackstone is a top priority... If I could build them tomorrow I would, but we don't have the revenue for that right now."
It's an issue Aurora's Deputy City Manager, Laura Perry, is working to tackle. Since coming over from Denver a few years ago, she's helped develop a first-of-its-kind plan for Aurora that focuses on the many multi-million-dollar emergency services projects.
"The city has grown by 40% over the last 20 years," she explained, "so over a year ago we invested in a Public Safety Capital Master Plan that really took a look at the needs of Aurora Fire Rescue as well as the Aurora Police Department."
Not only the stations needed in new neighborhoods like Aurora Highlands, but also the needs to update old stations that are no longer up to code.
"We have buildings that are 30 to 35 years old and require improvements," said Perry.
That includes the recently demolished AFR Station 9, which had a crumbling foundation. Oughton explained it was more cost-effective to demolish and rebuild than remodel the station built in the 1970s. Station 8, across the street from the Aurora Municipal Center, was built around the same time and is in great need of updating. When that can happen, however, depends on funding.
"With all the various capital needs across the city, both in police, fire, parks, transportation, and the city's finite resources ... balancing those needs is a continuous challenge because those resources are limited," Perry said.
The Public Safety Capital Master Plan will go before Aurora City Council in May, added Perry. And, it's the hope of AFR's leader that the growing needs of his department will be approved to better serve the rapidly growing community.
"There's one dollar that needs to be torn into several different pieces and shared throughout the city's infrastructure," Oughton said. "In a couple decades, this city is projected to be the largest city in the state by landmass and population. We need to keep up with that."
Aurora's Infrastructure Task Force is asking for the community's input on the growing needs of the city -- from public safety to transportation and more. A first-ever "Engage Aurora" event is happening this weekend at the Aurora Municipal Center where residents can share their ideas and feedback on what's needed:

Glider crash in Northern Colorado prompts concerns over oversight, regulation
Emergency services scrambled Wednesday morning for a glider crash near a remote airfield in Northern Colorado. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office believes that the glider, flying in a group of three, collided with a power line on descent, crashing on County Road 2. There was one pilot in the craft, but LCSO told CBS Colorado they are waiting to hear back from the family before publicly updating the pilot's health status. "These are always hard crashes, always hard calls to go on," said Kate Kimble, Public Information Officer for the Larimer County Sheriff's. The gliders, called 'ultralights', are typical of this area, and the airfield is owned by a resident off the road. But neighbors told CBS Colorado that it was only a matter of time before the worst happened, given how close the power lines were to a field that is used as an airstrip. One neighbor was walking along the Little Thompson River and returned to the area to see black smoke rising from the center of the road and their home without power. Teams with Poudre Valley REA worked throughout the day to return power and put new lines up. This airfield, located outside of Berthoud, is one of many in an area popular with gliding and flying smaller aircraft. "We have a lot of members in our flying and gliding community here in Colorado, and we know that this is an area of interest for them as well," Kimble explained. But some residents aren't thrilled with the gliders, telling CBS Colorado that they are starting to pose a safety risk as pilots conduct increasingly difficult maneuvers in the air. "The low flying is also a safety issue. Not just for me and my horses and livestock, but also from there," said Longmont resident Allison Schultz, who lives two miles west of Vance Brand Airport. She told CBS Colorado that she regularly sees ultralights flying low, sometimes below tree line, and is worried about the lack of regulation around the smaller aircraft. The NTSB and FAA sometimes investigate glider crashes, but sometimes do not, as was the case on Wednesday. "Here's a mix of so many different flying things [at the airport] and not a lot of regulation or management," said Schultz. Dr. Stephen Miller, a Longmont resident of 31 years, is also concerned about the safety risks. Earlier this year, an ultralight crashed on his property, flipping over in the field next to his home. The pilot escaped without injuries, but it made Miller worry about whether it might happen again. "[The pilots] have no regard for anything on the ground," he said. "It's like we don't exist." In light of another accident in the area, both Schultz and Miller would like to see more oversight and regulation of ultralights, and gliders in particular, whether it be from local, state or federal agencies. "It seems like no one has any oversight over these planes," he said.

Aurora house fire displaces 5 adults, 4 dogs and a turtle; investigators say cause was accidental
Investigators quickly ruled the cause of a house fire in Aurora to be accidental, but now five people, four dogs, and a turtle have been displaced from their home. The fire was called in around 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday near East 7th Avenue and North Norfolk Way, according to Aurora Fire Rescue. In total, 14 units from AFR and Falck Rocky Mountain responded to the call. Upon their arrival, firefighters found the back of the home engulfed in flames. By the time the fire was fully extinguished, the home suffered "major damage" to the interior and exterior, as well as a small detached structure in the backyard. No one was injured in the fire, and the Red Cross is now assisting those people who were displaced. And while investigators said the fire was caused accidentally, the fire department didn't offer details as to what, specifically, caused it.

New AFR and APD boathouse will reduce water rescue response time
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque's Fire and Police Departments said they'll be able to rescue people in the water faster, thanks to a new boathouse. AFR and APD will now be housing their airboats and other equipment at a brand-new garage. They said having their boats here saves them 10-15 minutes getting on the water. The Crew Behind Swift Water & Arroyo Rescues On a corner of Tingley Drive just north of the ABQ BioPark, a new garage is storing airboats for Albuquerque's Fire and Police Departments. Prior to this boathouse, AFR used to store their boats at Station Four near Coronado Park while APD's equipment was housed near their academy on Second Street. 'The issue there is any time we'd get a call, from driving from that location to our launch point at Tingley and Central is about 15-20 minutes, and so having this location here now cuts that down to five minutes at the most here to our launch location,' said Sergeant Brian Shannon, Albuquerque Police Department. This garage cost more than $600,000 and was completed last winter to house both AFR and APD equipment. AFR Lieutenant Jason Fejer said their boats were also used to respond to the bosque fires a few weeks ago. 'The bosque fire a couple of weeks ago, we actually had a couple of firefighters on APD's boat on the river with a pump fighting that fire from the river, so it does give us some flexibility on how we respond,' said Lieutenant Jason Fejer, Albuquerque Fire Rescue. Although there is no dedicated staffing at the boathouse, APD and AFR said its location still makes it convenient for available staff to report directly to the boathouse. The boathouse will also store ATVs and UTVs for police to patrol the bosque along with other necessary equipment. 'And that allows us to drive from here to across the street right into the bosque instead of having to load these up on a trailer, come here, park, unload them, and then drive in,' said SGT. Shannon. Both the fire and police departments said the boathouse location will allow them to keep more equipment and do more regular patrols on the river, but said they've put those on halt due to low water levels.
