Building The Band: What We Know About The Netflix Show Starring The Late Singer Liam Payne

Graziadaily7 days ago
A new Netflix show Building The Band will star the late Liam Payne, who was a guest judge on the show.
One Direction star Liam tragically died in October last year age 31, when he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. At the time, Liam's family issued a statement following his death which read: 'We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we'll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.'
Before he died, he filmed the competition series Building The Band, which has been dubbed a 'music experiment.' The show follows 50 singers who want to start a a band - but there's a twist. The contestants go in blind, and will discover their ideal bandmates based on what they sound like, their compatibility and their connection.
However, not everyone will make the cut. The 50 contestants will be whittled down to six bands, and then one winner. As the Netflix synopsis teases, the show promises 'Plenty of drama, next level artistry and unforgettable performances.' Think of it as a mixture between Love Is Blind and The Voice.
The filming for Building the Band took place in 2024, with filming wrapping in August. The three live shows were also filmed in late August at Aviva Studios in Manchester.
The show's executive producer Cat Lawson said ahead of filming last year: 'Building the Band is a brave and bold undertaking for all involved as we hand over power to the singers themselves to form their own band based on chemistry first. With looks out of the equation, can they create a deeper connection with their bandmates? With limited bands, there are difficult decisions and heart-stopping moments along the way, but ultimately the outcome is truly amazing, with bands forming who in my opinion are worthy of the very biggest stage!'
Liam Payne's involvement in the show was first announced last August, just two months before he died. The show has a total of ten episodes, and Liam will only appear from episode seven onwards. He is joined on the judging panel by Pussycat Dolls' Nicole Scherzinger and Destiny's Child star Kelly Rowland. The show is hosted by the Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean will host.
Netflix said in a press release this week that Liam's family had given their blessings for the show to go ahead. They said his family had 'reviewed the series and [was] supportive of his inclusion.'
Before the show starts, the show's host AJ will share an emotional tribute to Liam on screen. 'When we came together to film Building The Band, we never imagined we'd soon be saying goodbye to our friend, Liam Payne. Liam is a guest judge in later episodes and through his presence we see his deep love for music and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their voice,' he says. 'It is through that spirit that we dedicate this series to Liam and his family.'
Tributes have also been flooding in online for Liam ahead of the show's launch. When Netflix shared the trailer on X, a fan commented: 'I'm glad it's still being released,' adding 'This way we can still see Liam's genuine love for music and helping people.' Another fan commented: 'Heartbreaking to see Liam Payne in this posted. It's going to be his final project forever. I'm going to be crying my eyes out watching this show.'
The first four episodes will air on 9 July. Then, fans will have to wait a week or so for episodes 5, 6 and 7, which drop on July 16, 2025, followed by the final three episodes on July 23, 2025.

Perhaps the biggest story emanating out of a busy weekend of wrestling for the WWE is the injury that occurred to Seth Rollins during his match with LA Knight at Saturday Night's Main Event. During the match, Rollins attempted to perform a springboard moonsault to land on his feet in the middle of the ring. But after completing the move, he quickly started showing concern for his knee - leading to what wrestling commentators believe was finishing the match early 'on the fly.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Speaking about the potential injury during the post-WWE Evolution press conference, COO Paul 'Triple H' Levesque commented that Rollins' injury is 'a little bit inconclusive' and the company are expected to get an answer by today (July 14 2025.) He advised that an MRI will be undertaken 'and hope for the best,' adding that after that information is obtained, they'll 'see where we can go with that.' That has not stopped some maintaining this is part of an elaborate 'work' (storyline), however wrestling fans are concerned due to Rollins having previously been out for an extended amount of time after injuring his knee previously. Rollins suffered a significant knee injury (torn ACL, MCL, and medial meniscus) at a live event in November 2015, which forced him to relinquish the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and miss WrestleMania 32 in 2016, prompting the concerns from wrestling fans about his current status. Netflix release panned by critics but loved by audiences flies to number one

A sci-fi thriller slammed by critics as 'shallow' has defied the odds by becoming Netflix 's number one most-watched movie worldwide just days after its release. Brick, a German psychological thriller starring Matthias Schweighofer and Ruby O. Fee, debuted on the platform on July 10 with little advertisement of its release. The film currently holds a low 31 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with outlets like Decider urging audiences to 'skip it,' describing the movie as a 'go-nowhere high-concept thriller.' Tom's Guide also aimed its critiques at the film's 'fundamental flaws' and 'lack of subtlety.' 'It's constructed on a pretty shaky foundation, with hammy dialogue, soap opera-level performances, and such a lack of subtlety that it suggests the filmmakers think the average Netflix subscriber has the media literacy of a middle schooler,' the outlet wrote. It added that, 'despite its many fundamental flaws, I found the need for answers.' However, despite the brutal reviews, Brick is dominating Netflix's global charts and has cracked the Top 10 in the US as well. On the day of its release, it topped the charts in 43 countries, reaching 44 countries on July 12, per CBR. Due to its lack of promotion and that it's a foreign film, it sits in third place on the domestic charts. It is now streaming ahead of high-profile titles like Madea's Destination Wedding and Kpop Demon Hunters. And viewers have been gushing over the movie - and passionately recommending it to others. 'A pretty amazing and exciting contained thriller with a sci-fi twist,' someone wrote. 'The ensemble and the camera work sticks out, with the plot-taken twists you don't see coming. 'Fun and cool with that little German hint of weirdness!' Someone else said: 'This movie was so amazing. Great cast, great acting. I had no clue what was going to happen next. 'It is Escape Room on steroids. Great movie, great story, great cast, great direction.' Set in Hamburg, Germany, the film follows a couple who wake up one morning to find their apartment building suddenly sealed in by mysterious, impenetrable black walls. As panic spreads among their neighbors, they are forced to work together to escape and uncover the secret behind their confinement. Without spoiling too much, the film's final twist reveals the walls are part of a high-tech nanotech defense system gone haywire. Philip Kock wrote and directed the film, which also stars Frederick Lau, Josef Berousek, Alexander Beyer, Sira-Anna Faal, Murathan Muslu, Axel Werner, and Salber Lee Williams.
