Two Good Samaritan board members leave after combined 48 years
VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Thursday marked the final day for two members of Good Samaritan's Board of Governors.
Mary Cay Martin began her tenure on the board on February 9, 1998, and Jim Zeigler started on April 8, 2003. Both have served as board president at one point in their tenure, Ziegler doing so from 2007-2009 and again from 2016-2021, and Martin from 2009-2013 and most recently served as Vice Chairwoman.
Through their over four decades of combined service, Martin and Zeigler assisted in guiding the hospital through CEO transitions, major facility expansions, the introduction of new care models/partnerships, and more.
'This has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had,' Martin shared. 'I'm so grateful to Sherry Gregg Gilmore for asking me to serve and for supporting me throughout the years.'
Martin added that some of her biggest highlights were being voted board president, the construction of the Gibault Memorial, and the launch of the hospital's Federally Qualified Health Center.
'I love this hospital and its commitment to the community,' Zeigler added. 'People should know they can receive top-tier health care right here at home.'
Martin and Zeigler will be succeeded by Craig Kirk and Dr. Lance Payton who will begin in June.
'I've had the privilege of working with Jim and Mary Cay for their entire tenure on our Board of Governors,' Good Samaritan CEO Rob McLin said. 'For the past 15 years, they've been my 'bosses,' and I've been honored to work with two individuals who gave of their time to lead Good Samaritan toward our ultimate goal of providing world-class care through world-class caregivers.'

Good Samaritan describes helping kids in I-95 crash that killed their mother
One of the good Samaritans who rushed to pull three young children from a deadly Memorial Cay crash on Interstate 95 in Melbourne is speaking out. That crashed killed the children's mother, 32-year-old Olivia Maggs. Her 8-month-old daughter suffered a broken femur and brain bleed. Her two young sons were also hurt, but all three are expected to be OK. Troopers say a pickup truck blew a tire, which caused the crash near the Pineda Causeway. Susie Parente said she was one of dozens of people who pulled over after seeing the crash and tried to help. She called 911 and grabbed towels she had in her car. Parente said it was her first instinct to help and that anyone can help in a situation like that. 'Keep a first aid kit in your car. Always keep blankets, keep towels, different things. You just never know what you could need in an emergency. In general, learn CPR learn first aid. Those are all skills that you can use for you, your family, your friends, a stranger,' Parente said. Parente said she doesn't want recognition for what she and several others did. She said she just wants people to know how to help if they see an emergency and also wants people to think of the family. She said if anything, call 911 if you witness an emergency. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the Maggs family. Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps. And click here to stream Channel 9 Eyewitness News live.

No. 15 overall seed UCLA eases past Fresno State 19-4 behind a season-high 22 hits
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Roman Martin had a season-high four hits, including a solo home run, and Mulivai Levu added three hits and five RBIs to help No. 15 overall seed UCLA rout Fresno State 19-4 in the Los Angeles Regional on Friday. UCLA (43-16), back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years, will play Saturday against the winner between Arizona State and UC Irvine. Fresno State (31-28) will meet the loser in an elimination game. UCLA had a season-high 22 hits, topping its previous 19 against Purdue on March 30. Five different Bruins had at least three hits. Martin started UCLA's four-run first inning with an RBI single and Blake Balsz capped it with run-scoring bloop single. Martin finished with four hits and three RBIs and Balsz added three hits and two RBIs. UCLA starter Michael Barnett needed just eight pitches to set the Bulldogs down in order in the second. Barnett stranded a pair of runners in the fourth to get out of a jam. He allowed two earned runs and six hits over 4 1/3 innings. Chris Grothues (2-1) came on with runners at the corners and one out in the fifth and got Bobby Blandford to hit into a 3-6-1 double play. Grothues threw just 10 pitches — eight strikes — over 1 2/3 no-hit innings. Martin's eighth home run of the season made it 5-1 in the third. Balsz ripped an RBI single through the right side for a five-run lead. The Bruins sealed it with six runs in the seventh for a 10-run lead. Levu cleared the bases with a shot off the wall in left field. Payton Brennan hit his sixth home run of the season in a seven-run eighth. ___ AP college sports:

2025 Indiana Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The 2025 Special Olympics Summer Games in Terre Haute begin in one week and to kick off the events, local law enforcement and officials put their running shoes on. Officers from all branches come together, each year, to run alongside Special Olympics Indiana Athletes, signifying the beginning of the 2025 Special Olympics Summer Games. Quentin Seger is an officer at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. He said community is the most important aspect of this event. 'Coming together as a community is always important', Seger said. 'I'm a big believer in strength in numbers, so if a community can come together and show support for an organization, I think it's a huge help for a community to build a stronger bond and a relationship as a whole.' Participants ran three miles through downtown Terre Haute and Indiana State's campus, alongside Special Olympics athlete Shelby Baker, who was carrying the torch to start the race and cross the finish line. Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun said this run is just the start of local law enforcement's participation in the Special Olympics Summer Games. 'A lot of the local law enforcement agencies are actively involved, and I say actively because they don't just sponsor', Sakbun said. 'They do the high five line, they help compete in some of the events, they do the memorial run which means just so much to the athletes and the organization.' The Special Olympics Summer Games will begin in Terre Haute on June 6th, bringing together thousands of athletes, partners, and volunteers. Sakbun said the numbers do more than just help Terre Haute. 'Anytime you bring over 2,500 athletes, as well as their families, to the community that's obviously a huge boost', Sakbun said. 'I think what it also does, a unique event like this, is it inspires folks. The challenges that they go through to come through all of that and then champion at the end of it, honestly means a lot.' The Special Olympics Summer Games will take place from June 6th through the 8th, on the campuses of Indiana State and Rose-Hulman. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
