Cillian Murphy's mysterious new film ‘Steve' shakes up TIFF 2025 lineup

Express Tribune22-07-2025
In a surprise move that instantly raised the stakes, Steve, the latest feature from Belgian director Tim Mielants and starring Cillian Murphy, has been added to the Platform lineup at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. The announcement dropped alongside nine other films rounding out the competition, bringing fresh global energy to TIFF's most carefully curated section.
Murphy, hot off a wave of acclaim from his recent projects, takes on the lead in Steve, though plot details remain closely guarded. Mielants, best known for his work on The Responder and Patrick, reunites with Murphy after their collaboration on Peaky Blinders, sparking major anticipation among both critics and fans.
Other newly announced Platform selections include Between Dreams and Hope by Farnoosh Samadi, Bouchra by Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani, Hen by György Pálfi, and Nino from Pauline Loquès. Also in the mix: Sk+te'kmujue'katik (At the Place of Ghosts) by Bretten Hannam, The Currents by Milagros Mumenthaler, The World of Love from Yoon Ga-eun, To The Victory! by Valentyn Vasyanovych, and Winter of the Crow by Kasia Adamik.
This year's Platform jury will be led by Carlos Marqués-Marcet, whose They Will Be Dust won last year's award. He'll be joined by British actor and filmmaker Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Québécois director Chloé Robichaud, whose Two Women recently had a successful theatrical run.
TIFF's Platform section has a strong track record of spotlighting breakout cinema from rising voices, previously launching titles like Moonlight, Sound of Metal, and Lady Macbeth. With Steve now in contention, the 2025 edition promises to be one of the most closely watched in years.
Murphy's involvement brings a jolt of star power to the lineup, and given his history of enigmatic roles, all eyes will be on Steve.

Murphy, Davidson deliver laughs together

Actor-comedians Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson team up for The Pickup, a heist film that sees them sparring as a pair of incompatible armoured truck drivers, reports Reuters. Starring opposite Murphy, 64, was "a bucket list thing" for Davidson, 31, who had admired Murphy's work since he was seven. Unlike their characters, the two had much in common. "Pete comes from SNL. He's a standup comic. We're both from the East Coast," said Murphy. "I love to get into a scene with somebody else that's funny, improvise with them and start playing, I love it." On a routine round of cash pickups, Murphy's Russell and Davidson's Travis get targeted by criminals. Things get personal when Travis discovers that the thieves are led by his one-night-stand from the night before, played by Keke Palmer, and the life of Russell's hot-headed wife, played by Eva Longoria, comes under threat. The duo must pull together to save the day. The script, by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider, served as their blueprint and director Tim Story encouraged them to go off it, the two said. "We would do one as written and then Tim and everyone was like, 'Just go nuts' and we would end up just trying to one-up each other, we were just trying to make each other laugh," said Davidson. "They were improvising constantly and it was really sweet to see. It's so cool because you see two different generations," added Palmer. The generational differences also seeped into the scenes, with the fighting taking its toll on Russell's body. "Usually in these types of movies or my early movies like the 'Beverly Hills Cop' and 48 Hrs., I was the young maverick and now I'm the older guy," said Murphy. The Pickup starts streaming on Prime Video on August 6. As per Variety, Murphy's next big screen project is reprising his role as Donkey in Shrek 5. He's also signed on for a Donkey spin-off, which he'll start filming in September, according to Screenrant.

Eddie Murphy hints at new chapter for Donkey as 'Shrek 5' recording nears completion

Eddie Murphy has confirmed that a standalone Donkey movie is officially in the works and will begin production shortly after Shrek 5 wraps voice recording. The actor shared the update in a recent interview, revealing that the spin-off will start development in September 2025 and is targeting a 2028 release. 'We're still in the booth, and literally, we're still doing Shrek,' said Murphy, who is reprising his role as the energetic sidekick. 'We start in September on Donkey… Donkey's going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys.' The Donkey character, voiced by Murphy since the original Shrek in 2001, has remained one of the most iconic figures in the DreamWorks franchise. While Puss in Boots previously received his own spin-off films, this will be Donkey's first solo outing. Murphy added that the story will centre around Donkey's quirky family life, promising a 'funny story' in the spirit of the original films. The Donkey spin-off will explore his life with Dragon and their unique children, offering a new narrative arc for fans of the franchise. Before Donkey's solo adventure arrives, Shrek 5 is expected to hit theatres in late 2026, marking a long-awaited return for the beloved series. Voice recording for the fifth instalment is still ongoing.

Rebel Wilson sued by producers as chaos erupts over harassment scandal and film rights

Rebel Wilson's directorial debut, The Deb, has ignited a full-blown legal war, with the film's producers now accusing the actress of derailing distribution plans in order to seize control of the project. The production company AI Film filed a lawsuit in Australia this week, alleging Wilson intentionally undermined negotiations to buy the rights to the film herself, all while stoking a firestorm of harassment claims. According to the complaint, a prospective distributor backed out after Wilson allegedly threatened legal action to block the film's release. AI Film claims Wilson's actions were designed to torpedo the deal and shift blame to the producers, all while she was negotiating privately to acquire the film outright. The controversy stems from Wilson's public claims last year that she discovered serious misconduct involving lead actress Charlotte MacInnes and financial mishandling during production. The producers responded by suing her for defamation, alleging that the accusations were timed to boost Wilson's profile and help her gain a writing credit, as well as a coveted premiere slot at the Toronto International Film Festival. Wilson countered with her own legal action, repeating allegations of sexual harassment and theft, which MacInnes has publicly denied. Now, AI Film alleges Wilson misled other collaborators, telling them the company was responsible for stalled distribution and hiring a crisis PR firm to spin the narrative. They argue it's Wilson's own damaging comments and interference that have blocked the film from reaching audiences. Her legal team reportedly confirmed she is in talks to purchase The Deb and threatened legal retaliation if obstructed. Wilson maintains she wants the film released, blaming MacInnes for 'lies' and claiming the project has been sabotaged from within. In a scathing post on the film's Instagram, she wrote that the 300 people who worked on The Deb deserve better.
