Mariners' Eugenio Suarez took one swing that may snap his funk
The home run might have been meaningless on the scoreboard.
To pull from down 3-0 to within 3-1 in the ninth inning against a dominant closer is rarely going to be enough to actually mount a mighty comeback.
But when Eugenio Suarez hit a homer in that exact scenario for the Seattle Mariners on Saturday, it felt more important than that.

Because since his high-profile trade deadline acquisition, Suarez has been brutal.
With Arizona this season, Suarez had hit 36 home runs in 106 games while batting .248.
Even after his homer on Saturday, Suarez is batting .143 in 15 games with the Mariners with just two home runs.
Clearly, Seattle needs him to be better. Suarez was meant to be the prize of the deadline season.
The Mariners' other pickup from the Diamondbacks, Josh Naylor, has been awesome. Suarez, not so much.

It's not that he's unfamiliar. He spent two previous seasons with the Mariners, in 2022 and 2023. All indications were that he was excited to return to Seattle.
But for whatever reason, Suarez has been in a funk.
Taking Edwin Diaz deep isn't easy. The Mets closer is a superstar out of the bullpen.
So for Suarez to do that could finally be the moment that starts a hot streak for him.
The Mariners are certainly hoping that's the case, because they need Geno to be his best self down the stretch.

Mariners OF Víctor Robles launches bat at minor leaguer after being hit by pitch in rehab assignment
Seattle Mariners outfielder Víctor Robles completely erupted during a rehab assignment on Sunday night. Robles, who is currently playing with the Mariners' Triple-A affiliate out of Tacoma, was hit by a pitch in the third inning of their matchup with the Las Vegas Aviators, the Triple-A affiliate of the Athletics. Aviators starter Joe Estes' first pitch to Robles went high and inside, and hit Estes square near his head. Robles, after briefly collecting himself, then launched the bat hard at Estes. Robles was immediately thrown out of the game while the catcher stood there, stunned. Robles then charged at Estes and had to be held back as things escalated quickly on the field. Robles eventually walked away and into the dugout. He ended up throwing a big box of seeds out onto the field before finally leaving for good. The seeds went everywhere while both teams stood around near the mound. Robles has been recovering from a dislocated shoulder he went down with while trying to make a catch in foul territory in April. He ran hard into the wall and netting at Oracle Park during a game against the San Francisco Giants, but awkwardly bent back and fell to the ground after making the catch. He was later carted off the field. Robles made his first rehab assignment in Tacoma on Tuesday night, but he's now been hit by a pitch at least three times down there this week. It's unclear if anything else happened on Sunday night to prompt that reaction, though he's sure to face some sort of punishment from the league in the near future. Robles signed with the Mariners midway through last season after he spent his first eight years in the league with the Washington Nationals. He held a .273 ERA with 12 hits in 10 games before he went down with the shoulder injury. It's unclear how long Robles was going to be down in the minors before the incident, but Sunday's outburst certainly doesn't help things for him. The Mariners, meanwhile, hold a 68-57 record and sit in second in the AL West.
