Dolphins, Bears finish in 24-24 tie in the preseason

CHICAGO (AP) — Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had an efficient start to the preseason Sunday and the Miami Dolphins and the Bears finished in a 24-24 tie in Ben Johnson's Chicago coaching debut.
Playing in a preseason opener for the first time since 2021, Tagovailoa completed 5 of 6 for 27 yards in a 15-play drive against Bears backups, but the Dolphins failed to score on their first drive because of a Bears goal-line stand.
Running back Jaylen Wright was stuffed by Bears linebacker Noah Sewell on fourth-and-goal from the 1. He later scored on a 7-yard run late in the first half.
Miami backup quarterbacks Zach Wilson and Quinn Ewers directed three touchdown drives and Jason Sanders made a 56-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Sanders' kick with 6:22 remaining tied the game at 24 and the Dolphins defense turned back a late Bears scoring drive at the Miami 41.
Ewers, who went 5 of 18 for 91 yards, completed a 21-yard pass to Alexander Mattison on an eight-play, 41-yard drive in the fourth quarter, leading to a 1-yard TD score by rookie running back Ollie Gordon with 11:48 remaining for a 21-17 Miami lead.
Wilson replaced Tagovailoa after the goal-line stand and completed 5 of 9 for 96 yards. He hit a 35-yard pass to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and set up the Dolphins first score, then a 34-yard completion to Tahj Washington to set up the second TD.
Wilson, signed as a free agent after three seasons with the Jets and one in Denver, is looking to revive a career that started when he was the second overall pick of the 2021 draft.
Ben Johnson's debut
Johnson, the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year as Detroit's offensive coordinator last season, decided to sit quarterback Caleb Williams and all the other starters except left tackle Braxton Jones. Jones is in a starting competition with rookie Ozzy Trapilo.
Johnson is attempting to help turn around a franchise with a long history of poor quarterback play and struggling offense. However, it was his team's defense that stood out in his first preseason game as they sacked Miami's Wilson and Ewers six times, including three by defensive end Austin Booker. One was a strip-sack at the 3-yard line to set up Case Keenum's third-quarter TD pass to rookie Deion Hankins for a 17-14 Chicago lead.
Kicking game
Bears kicker Cairo Santos has roster competition from former Michigan State kicker Jonathan Kim. However, it was Santos connecting from long distance in this game as he hit a 57-yarder to close the first half and draw the Bears within 14-10.
Santos' career long in the regular season is 55 yards, made in 2020.
Injuries
Miami running back Alexander Mattison left the game with a knee injury after being tackled on a 21-yard pass play and did not return.
Bears rookie safety Major Burns suffered a knee injury and left the game in the first half. He didn't return. Running back Travis Homer (calf) and linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga (shoulder) also left the game and did not return.

Norman Powell gives honest thoughts on getting ‘acclimated' since Heat trade

The post Norman Powell gives honest thoughts on getting 'acclimated' since Heat trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. With the Miami Heat trading for Norman Powell from the Los Angeles Clippers in the offseason, it's a move that has given the team a new level of excitement. As people around the Heat have praised the move to trade for Powell, the player himself speaks on getting used to his new surroundings. Powell has been recently practicing with the Jamaican national basketball team for the FIBA World Cup 2027 Americas pre-qualifiers, which have been taking place in Boca Raton, Florida. Specifically at Florida Atlantic University, where Miami has held training camp before, Powell would express how being in South Florida under this situation has been getting him 'acclimated,' according to The Miami Herald. 'It's getting me acclimated,' Powell said. 'It has been amazing to be welcomed here. Not only with the Jamaican national team, and that side of my culture that I'm embracing and learning about. But being here in South Florida, checking into the hotel, people already know who I am and welcome me and are excited about me being on the Heat.' 'It's been amazing,' Powell continued. 'I've always looked at my life as full-circle moments. Things that have been talked about and signs, and things that you don't really notice. But then it comes full circle. I was expecting training camp to be in Jamaica, but then I learned that it was in Boca. And then being traded to the Heat, being so close to where I'll be playing, and being able to go down there and go to the facility, look for a place to stay. … It's definitely cool.' Norman Powell on starting a new chapter with the Heat As Powell will now join the Heat's featured duo of Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, the former Los Angeles Clipper gives the team a much-needed gutpunch on offense, as they ranked towards the bottom of the league in offensive rating. Speaking after a recent practice with the Jamaican national team, he would also express how eager he is to start a new era in his basketball career. 'Honestly, I'm super excited about it,' Powell said. 'It's always a shock when you get traded, especially coming off the year that I had, and talking to the front office, and it's all about extensions and things like that. And then you get a little rumbling that it's a possibility, but not really. And then you get traded. So the shock is always there.' 'But the Heat, they've welcomed me with open arms,' Powell continued. 'They've talked about how much they've wanted me and liked my game throughout the year, and they've tried to get me. So to come to a place that values you and wants you here and understands what you bring to the table and wants you to be you, you can't be upset or mad about that at all.' Last season, Powell averaged 21.8 points per game on shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 41.8 percent from deep. Powell is hoping to help Miami improve this upcoming season, as they were 37-45, which put them 10th in the Eastern Conference. While they would make it through the play-in tournament as the first 10th seed to do so, the Heat would get swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Bam Adebayo's true feelings on ‘All-Star caliber' Norman Powell Heat addition

The post Bam Adebayo's true feelings on 'All-Star caliber' Norman Powell Heat addition appeared first on ClutchPoints. Ever since the Miami Heat traded for Norman Powell, it has no doubt brought a shock to the fanbase as the team found a much-needed gutpunch on offense. With the Heat amid the offseason, still looking to iron out the roster, star Bam Adebayo has broken his silence on his thoughts regarding the addition of Powell. The former Los Angeles Clippers guard had the best year in his NBA career this past season, averaging 21.8 points per game on shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 41.8 percent from deep. Adebayo said last Saturday that the move for Powell is a 'very good shake-up' for Miami, according to The Miami Herald. 'It's a very good shake-up for our team, and now there's a different dynamic to it,' Adebayo said. Adebayo was the one who put out the message after the season ended at the hands of a Cleveland Cavaliers sweep that changes were coming to the organization. The deal for Powell displayed that, with Adebayo no doubt being a fan of the move, saying that they added an 'All-Star caliber player.' 'I feel like Norman is one of those guys that floats under the radar,' Adebayo said. 'But as you saw this year, he's really shown that he can be an All-Star caliber player. You've seen what he's done, and you've seen him grow in this league. And, obviously, he wants to take the next challenge. Obviously, the next challenge is being with the Miami Heat. So I'm happy to have him.' Powell would praise Adebayo to ClutchPoints during his first press conference with the team, citing his excitement for the team-up. Heat's Bam Adebayo on the departures of Duncan Robinson, Kevin Love As the Heat will continue to be surrounded by rumors, the trade for Powell gives the team a different look and another weapon besides the featured duo of Adebayo and Tyler Herro. However, there were some decisions to be made in who gets traded from Miami's side, plus some other departures featuring a familiar place. In the Powell trade, the Heat would deal Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson (who came from the Jimmy Butler trade), and aside from that, long-time Miami sharpshooter Duncan Robinson would go to the Detroit Pistons in a sign-and-trade. Adebayo had been teammates with Robinson since the 2018-19 season and also had developed a close relationship with Love, as the star showed love to the two. 'I'm going to miss them, obviously,' Adebayo said. 'Just because Duncan has been here for eight years, and having that connection was special. And then K-Love was a leader that could speak to somebody from a championship level, could obviously encourage the younger group, be an example, but also he was the bridge between some of the coaches and the players. So like I said, I'm going to miss both of them. I'm glad we had the time that we did. It was, obviously, helpful for my growth and my development as a player and as a captain.' Miami is looking to improve after finishing last season at 37-45, which put them 10th in the Eastern Conference, though they would make it through the play-in tournament and punch their ticket to the playoffs. However, the Heat would be frustratingly swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA playoffs.
