West Indies claim first Test win on Pakistan soil since 1990

Times of Oman27-01-2025
Multan: West Indies levelled the series 1-1 with a commanding victory over Pakistan in Multan.
This was their first-ever win on Pakistan soil since 1990, when they last won in Faisalabad under former legendary captain, Desmond Haynes.
It was a vital victory for the Caribbean nation as it means they finish above Pakistan in the WTC Standings, taking the eighth spot with a PCT of 28.21 compared to Pakistan's PCT of 27.98.
The match was a tight affair between both sides. At the end of the first innings, West Indies held a slender lead of 9 runs at the end of Day 1, with Noman Ali (6/41) and Jomel Warrican (4/43) being the pick of the bowlers for either side.
However, West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite played a resolute knock of 52 (74) to guide his side to 244, giving the hosts a target of 253 runs to win by tea on Day 2.
Pakistan's chase got off to a shaky start, losing their openers within the first 3 overs of their second innings. Babar Azam's 31 (67) helped guide Pakistan to 76/4 at the end of play on Day 2.
Jerome Warrican was the match-winner on Day 3 as he tore through Pakistan's batting with figures of 5/27.
He dismissed Kashif Ali in the 26th over of the innings with a stunning bowled delivery and sealed the deal for West Indies with another spectacular bowled dismissal of Mohammed Rizwan in the 42nd over of the innings.
Warrican was named Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his brilliant performance with the ball, grabbing nine wickets over the course of the second Test and proving integral in West Indies' first Test success in Pakistan in almost 35 years.

Cricket West Indies convenes emergency strategic meeting to address cricket performance challenges

Saint John's: At the request of Cricket West Indies President Kishore Shallow, an emergency meeting of the Cricket Strategy & Officiating Committee commenced here to address critical challenges facing West Indies cricket and implement immediate structural reforms. The two-day summit began on Saturday at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad and aims to bring together the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee, with such members as former West Indies players Desmond Haynes, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ian Bradshaw, as well as special invitees Sir Clive Lloyd and Sir Vivian Richards. Also in attendance will be senior men's players and coaching staff led by head coach Daren Sammy. Cricket West Indies Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe welcomed the imminent important discussions and the value of heeding the President's call to convene. "This summit represents a critical turning point for West Indies cricket. We hope to engage in frank, honest and solutions-oriented discussions with coaches, former and current players, and administrators," said Bascombe. "What we hope will emerge is a unified vision and a clearly defined, comprehensive framework designed to correct systemic inadequacies and close the performance gap at the elite level. This is not about quick fixes but identifying the structural reforms necessary across our development and high-performance systems, and strategic short and long-term initiatives required to drive the necessary change, " added Bascombe. The first day of talks will focus on "High Performance Strategy and Structural Reform". Wide-ranging panel discussions will examine current team performance challenges and identify immediate improvement strategies. The focus on day two will shift to "Player-Centred High-Performance Solutions" with direct input from current senior players and coaching staff about performance gaps and team ambitions. Head Coach Daren Sammy will lead a coaching staff feedback session to address the team's brand of cricket as well as any immediate difficulties, while players will be able to speak candidly about their experiences. This meeting is CWI's response to ongoing performance concerns to ensure swift action on critical areas identified during the two-day strategic review. Implementation of the meeting's outcomes is expected to begin immediately, and progress updates will be provided as restructuring is deployed across all levels of West Indies cricket. Cricket West Indies CEO Chris Dehring also highlighted the significance of the think tank. "This emergency strategic meeting is not simply a reaction but a necessary intervention. The performance of our senior men's team has raised legitimate concerns among our fans, stakeholders and partners and we could not afford to continue with business as usual", he said. "We expect deep, transparent conversations with the people closest to the action, such as our players, coaches and selectors and what we hope to emerge is a serious, organisation-wide commitment to change. As administrators, we are determined to support these reforms with the necessary resources, infrastructure and leadership. West Indies cricket deserves no less." A press briefing will be held following the conclusion of the final day of talks, on Monday at 3 PM in the Hyatt Meeting Room, to shed light and share insights on the outcome of the sessions. This briefing will be broadcast live on the Windies Cricket YouTube Channel and will feature a moderated Q&A session to allow both in-person journalists and online viewers to pose questions to a select panel, ensuring broad accessibility to the media, cricket community and stakeholders. The panel will include CWI CEO Chris Dehring, Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe, legendary former captain Sir Clive Lloyd and Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee Chair Enoch Lewis. During this briefing, DoC Miles Bascombe will provide detailed insights into the strategic themes and long-term strategies developed during the meeting.

Team India jumps up in WTC standings following thrilling six-run win at The Oval

London : Following a resilient win at The Oval to end the series with a 2-2 scoreline in England, Team India has moved to the third spot in the ICC World Test Championsips (WTC) points table, with two wins, two losses and a draw during the ongoing cycle so far. The WTC standings have seen significant change after inspirational spells from Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna helped India seal a six-run win in a thrilling showdown at The Oval to level the series 2-2. While it is still early days in the WTC27 cycle, India managed to usurp England and move into third place in the ICC World Test Championship standings with their victory in the final Test, earning 12 crucial points. They now have 28 points on the board and a points percentage of 46.67 per cent, as per ICC. Despite having a similar number of wins and draws as India, England sits fourth in the standings with 26 points and a points percentage of 43.33%. Their position was impacted by a two-point deduction for a slow over rate during the Lord's Test. Australia remain at the top of the table, having won all three matches they've played in this cycle so far. Their opponents in those matches, West Indies, are yet to register a point and sit sixth in the standings, only ahead of South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan, all of whom are yet to play a game in this cycle. Sri Lanka currently sit second in the ICC World Test Championship standings, having registered a victory and a draw in their two matches so far, giving them a points percentage of 66.67 per cent. Meanwhile, Bangladesh are placed fifth, with just four points and a points percentage of 16.67 per cent.

Questions England must address ahead of Ashes in Australia

London: England need to seek answers ahead of the five-match Ashes series in Australia later this year. If they harbour aspirations of reaching the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final for the first time, then a positive result Down Under is crucial, as per the official website of the ICC. England showed plenty of good signs during their recent series with India, but still have some unanswered questions as they attempt to win back the Ashes from Australia for the first time since the start of 2018. England tried as many as six different fast bowlers across the five-match series against India, but they aren't all that much clearer about what their best pace line-up looks like. Whether Chris Woakes recovers from his shoulder ailment in time for the Ashes remains to be seen, while the ongoing fitness concerns for pace spearhead Jofra Archer are also sure to be monitored before the trip Down Under. England will also be hoping that Mark Wood will be fit to make the trip to Australia as his pace will surely be an asset, with the likes of Josh Tongue, Brydon Carse, and Gus Atkinson all in consideration for selection too. While there is no doubting the class of Joe Root, the England veteran is yet to register a Test century on Australian shores, and this is probably the only thing missing from his bulky resume as he tries to hunt down Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most hundreds in Test cricket. If Root can break his century duck this time in Australia and lead England to an Ashes victory, then it will surely go down as one of the right-hander's biggest achievements during his illustrious international career. Youngster Shoaib Bashir appears to be the front-runner to be England's first-choice spin option during the Ashes, providing he recovers from his finger injury, but the 20-year-old is yet to set the world on fire and may be targeted by Australia's batting group. England could turn to the experience of Jack Leach or provide Liam Dawson another opportunity after he got a taste of it against India, or will Rehan Ahmed make a surprise return and be included in the touring party? Crawley was England's leading run-scorer during the most recent Ashes series in 2023, but the tall opener was somewhat disappointing on his inaugural visit to Australia when he managed just 166 runs from three Tests across the 2021/2022 series. Australia's experienced pace attack will fancy their chances against Crawley and the right-hander will be under pressure to perform well and get the side off to a good start alongside fellow opener Ben Duckett. Jamie Smith has made a superb start to his fledgling international Test career, and the comparisons with Australian great Adam Gilchrist seem somewhat justified, given his Test batting average currently sits close to 50. It will be a step up in class for Smith taking on Australia away from home and the Aussies are sure to try and intimidate the talented 25-year-old in his first tour Down Under.
