West Indies claim first Test win on Pakistan soil since 1990

Times of Oman27-01-2025

Multan: West Indies levelled the series 1-1 with a commanding victory over Pakistan in Multan.
This was their first-ever win on Pakistan soil since 1990, when they last won in Faisalabad under former legendary captain, Desmond Haynes.
It was a vital victory for the Caribbean nation as it means they finish above Pakistan in the WTC Standings, taking the eighth spot with a PCT of 28.21 compared to Pakistan's PCT of 27.98.
The match was a tight affair between both sides. At the end of the first innings, West Indies held a slender lead of 9 runs at the end of Day 1, with Noman Ali (6/41) and Jomel Warrican (4/43) being the pick of the bowlers for either side.
However, West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite played a resolute knock of 52 (74) to guide his side to 244, giving the hosts a target of 253 runs to win by tea on Day 2.
Pakistan's chase got off to a shaky start, losing their openers within the first 3 overs of their second innings. Babar Azam's 31 (67) helped guide Pakistan to 76/4 at the end of play on Day 2.
Jerome Warrican was the match-winner on Day 3 as he tore through Pakistan's batting with figures of 5/27.
He dismissed Kashif Ali in the 26th over of the innings with a stunning bowled delivery and sealed the deal for West Indies with another spectacular bowled dismissal of Mohammed Rizwan in the 42nd over of the innings.
Warrican was named Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his brilliant performance with the ball, grabbing nine wickets over the course of the second Test and proving integral in West Indies' first Test success in Pakistan in almost 35 years.

"We have a nice, varied bowling attack....": England coach McCullum ahead of India Tests

London: Ahead of his side's five-match series against India at home, England head coach Brendon McCullum said the bowling attack looks really nice and varied and the Three Lions are looking forward to playing an "outstanding cricketing nation". India will be kickstarting a new era without their seniors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in Tests while they will also mark the beginning of their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle as they take on England in a five-Test series from June 20 onwards. Speaking to Sky Sports Cricket ahead of the Tests, McCullum said, "It is important the guys refresh. We know where we want to get to as a Test team." He also said that while some quality bowlers are unavailable, the team has a "nice, varied bowling attack with Chris Woakes, Sam Cook, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue for the high-pace element." He also hailed young spinner Shoaib Bashir, saying that he is "growing in Test cricket every day". In 16 Tests since his debut last year, Bashir has taken 58 wickets at an average of 36.39, with best figures of 6/81 and four five-wicket hauls. "We know we are going to be tested against India, and they will arrive prepared. They are an outstanding cricketing nation, who will come here with high hopes, and we are looking forward to seeing them," he concluded. The series will take place from June to August, with matches at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London). Jamie Overton has been handed a surprise recall to England's squad for the first Test against India after his Surrey team-mate Gus Atkinson was ruled out with a hamstring strain Bethell has returned to the squad, while Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse are both back after missing England's win over Zimbabwe with niggles. England's squad has changed significantly since their 4-1 series defeat in India last year. James Anderson retired shortly after that tour, while Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes and Ollie Robinson have also been discarded. India have also undergone a transition, with R Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma all retiring and Shubman Gill taking on the captaincy for the first time. India, who have not won a Test series in England since 2007, have sent several members of their squad ahead to play for India A against the Lions, and the rest of their touring party will arrive in the UK on Friday. Playing XI for first Test: Ben Stokes (Durham) - Captain, Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Brydon Carse (Durham), Sam Cook (Essex), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Jamie Overton (Surrey), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jamie Smith (Surrey), Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).

South Africa pacemen destroy Australia top order in WTC final

LONDON: South Africa fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen took two wickets each to reduce Australia to 67-4 on the first morning of the World Test Championship final at Lord's on Wednesday. Defending champions Australia were in desperate trouble in overcast conditions in London at 16-2 after losing Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green in a single Rabada over. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith led a mini-recovery before Jansen snuffed that out, removing opener Labuschagne and the dangerous Travis Head. Former captain Smith, who has an impressive record at Lord's, was 26 not out at the break. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma had opted to field in conditions that promised to favour his quicks after winning the toss and his decision paid early dividends. Khawaja fell for a 20-ball duck in the seventh over, edging behind to David Bedingham at first slip. Three balls later 12-1 became 16-2. New batsman Green edged low to second slip, where Aiden Markram held a superb diving catch under the glare of the Lord's floodlights. Rabada had now taken two wickets for four runs in four balls. The 30-year-old, who has more than 300 Test wickets, is playing his first Test after serving a one-month ban for cocaine use earlier this year. Australia have struggled to find a regular opening partner for Khawaja since David Warner's retirement 17 months ago, with Labuschagne the latest batsman tried out. The 30-year-old, without a Test century for nearly two years, battled hard for 56 balls. But on 17 he was undone by a classic piece of fast bowling from towering left-armer Jansen. Hit on the shoulder the previous ball when trying to duck a bouncer, Labuschagne pushed tentatively at a Jansen delivery from around the wicket and got a faint edge through to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, leaving Australia 46-3. They had been in similar trouble in the 2023 final against India across London at the Oval, only for Smith and Head to both score hundreds as they turned the match in Australia's favour. Head, however, could only manage 11 on Wednesday before he glanced Jansen, with Verreynne capping an excellent fielding display by South Africa as he held an excellent diving one-handed catch. South Africa are aiming to win their first major trophy since lifting the ICC Knockout, a forerunner of the Champions Trophy, in 1998. The top-ranked Australians, who beat India in the 2023 WTC final, have won multiple white-ball trophies. — AFP

Australia announces squad for WTC final against South Africa

New Delhi : Defending champions of the World Test Championship (WTC), Australia, named their squad to face South Africa in the WTC finals next month at Lord's, as per a release from Cricket Australia. Cameron Green's return to the Test squad after back surgery has been confirmed, with spinner Matt Kuhnemann also included, as Australia revealed their squad for their WTC defence and subsequent Caribbean tour on Tuesday. Sheffield Shield player of the final, Brendan Doggett, has been named a travelling reserve for the 15-player squad, which otherwise features no major surprises from outside the group that beat Sri Lanka 2-0 and India 3-1 last summer. Pat Cummins' side is seeking to become the first nation to win multiple WTC finals when it faces South Africa at Lord's from June 11. Cummins and Hazlewood have overcome injuries that kept them out of the Sri Lanka tour and the Champions Trophy earlier in the year, with both returning to action via the Indian Premier League. Australia won four of its six series to clinch a spot in its second straight WTC final. It also drew 2-2 with England in the 2023 Ashes and 1-1 with West Indies during the 2023-24 home summer. South Africa topped the standings with eight wins from 12 Tests for a points percentage of 69.44, while Australia's was 67.54 with 13 wins from 19 matches. "The team finished the WTC cycle with an impressive series victory in Sri Lanka following an equally strong summer in defeating India for the first time in a decade," selection chair George Bailey said. "Those series capped a consistent performance across the two-year cycle and now presents us with the incredibly exciting opportunity to defend the World Test Championship." "It means a lot to the group to reach the final, and they are very much looking forward to the challenge South Africa will present at Lord's," Bailey added. Selectors have opted for the same squad for three Tests in the Caribbean with Beau Webster retained as the preferred allrounder following a strong start to his Test career, while Sam Konstas is back in the mix after leaving Sri Lanka early to finish the domestic season with NSW.
