Noman Ali among nominees for ICC award
The nominees for the ICC Men's Player of the Month award for January 2025 have been revealed, with three spinners showing stellar performances during the month. Jomel Warrican, Noman Ali, and Varun Chakravarthy will compete for the prestigious award. Noman Ali (Pakistan): Pakistan's Noman Ali continued his superb form, being their primary strike bowler in the series against the West Indies. He took six wickets in the first Test, conceding just 81 runs. However, it was in the second Test where Noman truly shone. Noman became the first-ever Pakistan spinner to claim a Test hat-trick, taking six wickets in the first innings of the second Test. He followed that up with another four-wicket performance in the second innings, finishing with remarkable match figures of 10/121. In total, Noman Ali took 16 wickets at an average of 12.62 and scored 15 runs in January, making him one of the top performers for the month. Jomel Warrican (West Indies): Jomel Warrican put up a career-best performance in Pakistan, helping the West Indies draw the Test series against the hosts. On the spin-friendly pitches of Multan, Warrican caused major problems for Pakistan's batters. In the first Test, he delivered impressive bowling figures of 10/101 and added an unbeaten 31 with the bat, although the West Indies lost by 127 runs. However, Warrican bounced back strongly in the second Test, taking four wickets in the first innings and followed it up with a brilliant five-wicket haul in the second innings, bringing his match figures to 9/70. His all-round efforts helped the West Indies secure a win in the second Test, ensuring the series ended in a draw. Warrican finished January with 85 runs at an average of 42.50 and 9 wickets at an average of 9, earning him the Player of the Series award. Varun Chakravarthy (India): Varun Chakravarthy continued his brilliant form after returning to India's national team in October 2024. In January, he was in exceptional form, featuring in four T20I matches against England at home. Chakravarthy showed his skill from the start, as English batters struggled to pick his spin. In the first T20I at Eden Gardens, he impressed with figures of 3/23 and earned the Player of the Match award. In Chennai, although he gave away 38 runs, Chakravarthy picked up the key wickets of Harry Brook and Jamie Overton. However, his standout performance came in Rajkot, where he spun through the English lineup to claim 5 wickets for just 24 runs. He followed that up with two more wickets in the fourth T20I in Pune. Chakravarthy ended January with 12 wickets at an impressive average of 9.41 and an economy rate of 7.01, further cementing his place as one of the best bowlers in the shortest format. Shoaib Akhtar predicts CT semi-finalists Former test cricketer and fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has made his prediction for the semi-finalists of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Spinners dominate the shortlist for ICC Men's Player of the Month, which includes Noman Ali, Varun Chakravarthy and Jomel Warrican Beth Mooney, Karishma Ramharack and star of the U19 Women's T20 World Cup, Gongadi Trisha form the nominees for the Women's Player of the Month More about the ICC Player of the Month awards is available here The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the players in contention for the ICC Men's and Women's Player of the Month awards for January, highlighting the top performers from a busy month of international cricket. Three talented spinners comprise the shortlist of candidates for the ICC Men's Player of the Month, after all enjoyed a prolific start to 2025 in both long and short formats. Noman Ali seeks to win his second ICC Men's Player of the Month award after wicket-taking feats and a historic hattrick in Pakistan's World Test Championship series against the West Indies. First-time nominee Jomel Warrican topped the bowling charts in that series and led the tourists to their first Test win in the Pakistan for 34 years. Varun Chakravarthy completes the trio, after a string of stellar displays in India's T20I triumph over England. The ICC Women's Player of the Month nominees feature two senior stars of the short formats, alongside a promising young star fresh from U19 Women's T20 World Cup success. Beth Mooney was one of the primary architects of Australia's dominant Ashes triumph over England in January, most notably in the T20I encounters, while the West Indies' spinner Karishma Ramharack was among the wickets as her side claimed victory over Bangladesh in a competitive ODI series. The final nominee is India's U19 all-round sensation Gongadi Trisha, following her Player of the Tournament efforts in a scintillating World Cup campaign. An independent ICC Voting Academy* and fans around the world will now be invited to cast their votes to decide the winners, which will be announced next week. Fans are now able to vote for their favourite performers at ICC Men's Player of the Month Nominees for January: Noman Ali (Pak) Having won his maiden ICC Men's Player of the Month award back in October 2024, Noman continues his impressive run in Pakistan's Test bowling attack with another fruitful series against a spirited West Indies side in Multan. 16 Wickets fell to the left-armer across two matches, culminating in a ten-wicket performance in the second Test that included figures of six for 41 in the first innings and a brilliant hattrick – the first by a Pakistan spinner in Test cricket. Varun Chakravarthy (Ind) Another player who continues to enjoy fine form in international cricket, Chakravarthy was a threatening presence in India's decisive T20I series against England in January. His four matches during the calendar month heralded 12 wickets at a startling average of 9.41, highlighted by a superb five for 24 in Rajkot – his best return in a home T20I – and has since seen him propel up the ICC Men's T20I Bowler rankings to joint second position. Jomel Warrican (WI) Nominated for the very first time, the 32-year old celebrated a triumphant return to Test action in January with 19 wickets across both Tests in Pakistan. Awarded the Player of the Series for his efforts, Warrican took ten wickets in the first Test including a career-best seven for 32 in the second innings, before inspiring a landmark victory in the second encounter. Chipping in with valuable runs in the lower order, the left-arm spinner claimed five for 27 in the second innings to secure the 120-run win. ICC Women's Player of the Month Nominees for January: Beth Mooney (Aus) As Australia stormed to an Ashes sweep over England, Mooney was an ever-present force in the ODI and T20I encounters. A subdued start to the series by her standards came to an end with a battling half-century in the third ODI in Hobart, and from there her series came to life. Saving her best performances for the 20-over contests, the opener notched 213 runs at a blistering strike rate of 146.89, with scores of 75 and 44 preceding a stunning 94 not out in Adelaide in just 63 balls. These performances helped Mooney consolidate her position atop the Women's T20I Batter rankings and sees her nominated for the first time since January 2024. Karishma Ramharack (WI) Ramharack celebrates her maiden nomination for the Player of the Month award, and features among the trio of contenders thanks to impressive performances in the West Indies' ODI series against Bangladesh. With the hosts having won the opening match, the off-spinner recorded her first four-wicket haul in the format with four for 33, albeit in a losing cause in Basseterre. Her good form continued in the decider, where she went one better and recorded career-best figures of four for 12 to seal a comfortable eight-wicket victory and the Player of the Series prize. Gongadi Trisha (Ind) The 19-year-old was the toast of Malaysia at the recently concluded U19 Women's T20 World Cup 2025, starring in India's surge to the silverware with a record-breaking campaign. With 265 runs and 4 wickets coming in January's contests, she hit the headlines with an inspired performance against Scotland; striking the first century in U19 Women's T20 World Cup history with 110 not out off 59 balls before taking three wickets for six runs. As the tournament progressed, Trisha then capped a sterling campaign with a Player of the Match performance in the final that saw her named the outstanding player at the event. The ICC Player of the Month Voting Process: The three nominees for either category are shortlisted based on performances from the first to the last day of each calendar month. Listen to article Pakistan's left-arm spinner Noman Ali has made a significant leap in the latest ICC Test bowlers rankings, climbing four places to secure the fifth spot. This achievement follows his outstanding 10-wicket haul in the recently concluded Test match against the West Indies in Multan. Noman's stellar performance was crucial in Pakistan's effort to level the series 1-1. His ability to dismantle the opposition with precision and consistency has earned him 806 rating points, making him only the 12th Pakistan bowler to surpass 800-points marks in Test bowling rankings. The 38-year-old spinner has been a reliable performer for Pakistan, regularly delivering match-winning spells. His rise in the rankings highlights the depth of Pakistan's spin bowling attack and its growing dominance in the longer format of the game. The latest ICC rankings update also saw West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican climb 16 places to 25th after claiming 19 wickets in the series, earning him the Player of the Series title. Meanwhile, India's Jasprit Bumrah continues to lead the Test bowlers rankings following his impressive performances against Australia. In the T20I rankings, England's Adil Rashid reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the bowling charts after a strong showing against India, while India's Varun Chakravarthy moved up 25 places to fifth. England pacer Jofra Archer also jumped 13 spots to sixth. For batters, Australia's Travis Head remains at the top of the T20I rankings, but India's young left-hander Tilak Varma climbed to second place and is closing in on Head's lead. If Varma overtakes Head, he will become the youngest-ever No. 1 T20I batter, surpassing Babar Azam's record.

West Indies claim first Test win on Pakistan soil since 1990
Multan: West Indies levelled the series 1-1 with a commanding victory over Pakistan in Multan. This was their first-ever win on Pakistan soil since 1990, when they last won in Faisalabad under former legendary captain, Desmond Haynes. It was a vital victory for the Caribbean nation as it means they finish above Pakistan in the WTC Standings, taking the eighth spot with a PCT of 28.21 compared to Pakistan's PCT of 27.98. The match was a tight affair between both sides. At the end of the first innings, West Indies held a slender lead of 9 runs at the end of Day 1, with Noman Ali (6/41) and Jomel Warrican (4/43) being the pick of the bowlers for either side. However, West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite played a resolute knock of 52 (74) to guide his side to 244, giving the hosts a target of 253 runs to win by tea on Day 2. Pakistan's chase got off to a shaky start, losing their openers within the first 3 overs of their second innings. Babar Azam's 31 (67) helped guide Pakistan to 76/4 at the end of play on Day 2. Jerome Warrican was the match-winner on Day 3 as he tore through Pakistan's batting with figures of 5/27. He dismissed Kashif Ali in the 26th over of the innings with a stunning bowled delivery and sealed the deal for West Indies with another spectacular bowled dismissal of Mohammed Rizwan in the 42nd over of the innings. Warrican was named Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his brilliant performance with the ball, grabbing nine wickets over the course of the second Test and proving integral in West Indies' first Test success in Pakistan in almost 35 years.
