Karnataka Govt suspends 3 police inspectors for falsely implicating tribal man in wife's murder
The Karnataka Government Sunday suspended three police officers for falsely implicating a tribal man on the charge of killing his wife in the state's Kodagu district in 2021.
Kurubara Suresh, 35, a labourer from a tribal community, was arrested in June 2021 for 'killing' his wife, and spent two years in jail. However, later it was found that his wife was alive, and had been living with her boyfriend.
The police officers who have been suspended are B G Prakash, Mahesh Kumar, and Prakash Yathinamani, inspectors in Kushalanagar and Yelawala and Jayapura, respectively. Vishnuvardhana N, Superintendent of Police, Mysuru, confirmed to The Indian Express that the officers had been suspended, and an inquiry was pending.
Reacting to the suspension order, B S Pandu Poojari, the lawyer who represents Suresh, said they were not satisfied with the suspension order. 'We want the government to initiate criminal proceedings against those accused officials to give justice to the victim,' he added.\
Suresh filed a missing-person complaint at the Kushalnagar Rural Police Station in Kodagu district after his wife, Mallige, went missing in November 2020. He was arrested by the Bettadapura police in Mysuru district on charges of murdering his wife after a woman's skeleton was discovered, leading to his two-year-long incarceration. He was released on bail in September 2024.
On April 1 this year, Suresh's friends found out that his wife was alive, and had been with her boyfriend 30 km away from their village. They immediately informed the police.
Later, the Mysuru district court directed the police to submit a report. Mallige appeared before the judge, and stated that his wife was alive. The court then ordered the police to drop the charges against Suresh, and remove his name as accused or suspect from the chargesheet.
Recently, he also approached the Karnataka High Court seeking Rs 5 crore in compensation after spending nearly 18 months in jail following his wrongful arrest. The police are yet to ascertain the identity of the body, which they discovered in an area under the Bettadapura police limits.

Delhi: Mechanic falls to death from 8th floor while servicing AC
A mechanic fell to his death from the 8th floor of a building, while servicing an air conditioner, in the Netaji Subhash Place area, the Delhi Police said. The incident took place at Agarwal Cyber Plaza, officers said. According to police, the deceased, Ram Sevak (32), a resident of Wazirabad, worked at a Shalimar Bagh-based AC repair and service shop. On Monday afternoon, police said, the victim, along with four colleagues — Pradeep Kumar, Bharat Bhushan, Jagdish and Chandan — went to the Agarwal Cyber Plaza to install and service some ACs as an office on the 8th floor was undergoing renovation. 'Ram was cleaning the outdoor part of an AC on the 8th floor. That's when his foot slipped and he fell. His colleagues ran down and rushed him to Saroj Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest Delhi) Bhisham Singh said. Police said they have registered a case of death due to negligence against unknown persons, as the initial investigation showed that Ram was working without any protective gear. Last month, a 30-year-old worker died at a metal factory in the Mandoli Industrial area. He was on the second floor of the building when, suddenly, he slipped and fell, landing on top of a rolling machine that severed his neck. In this case, too, police had registered a case of death due to negligence against unknown persons. 'The contractor, along with other people associated with the factory, was questioned. We are also looking into safety measures deployed at the facility and working conditions of workers,' a police officer had said earlier. The worker, Vikas, lived in the Rahul Garden area of Loni, Ghaziabad, with his pregnant wife. Police officers had said the victim had been working at the factory since February after he was hired by a local contractor.

15 dead & 35 injured as blast tears through chem plant near Hyderabad
HYDERABAD: A powerful explosion tore through a multi-storey chemical plant building at Pashamylaram village in Telangana's Medak district Monday morning, killing at least 15 workers and injuring 35 others - 12 critically. Authorities said the toll may rise as several workers are believed to be trapped beneath the collapsed structure. The workers are from Telangana, Andhra, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, UP and Bengal. Over 60 workers had reported for duty around 9.20am when the explosion reduced a building to rubble at the Rs 500-crore Sigachi Industries facility. Initial findings suggest a dryer malfunction in the quality control unit triggered the blast. "V-P (ops) M E Elanghovan, in charge of attendance, is missing. This makes it difficult to determine who was in the building," a fire official said. Telangana blast burnt victims badly, only 4 identified so far Vice president, operations, M E Elanghovan had just stepped out of his car when the explosion struck the factory, about 50km from Hyderabad. An adjacent HR block and a rear compound wall were partially damaged. Chunks of cement crushed some workers, while others suffered fatal burns as flames spread rapidly after the blast. PM Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. "We have stationed two robots along with SDRF personnel and rescue teams," a senior fire official said. "Aerial lighting systems have been installed to support night-time rescue operations." Distraught relatives waited outside hospitals and at the blast site, hoping for news as authorities struggled to trace missing workers. "Lack of accurate information from the company management on how many workers were inside has complicated rescue efforts," director of fire services G V Narayana Rao said. "More could be trapped under the debris. Only once the rubble is cleared will we have a clear picture." Many relatives had not heard from loved ones since the explosion. "My nephew Ajal Mondal is just 19 and came here two months ago from Kolkata," said his uncle. "We haven't told his family back home yet. They'll panic if we do." Shubham Chaudhary, searching for his uncle Munnilal, 55, said he saw burnt bodies outside the factory but had no word on his uncle. Pinky, 21, said her brother Siddhant Gonda, 19, started work in quality control unit just three months ago. He remains missing. The family of senior manager S Ravi, 41, said they last spoke to him around 9am, minutes before the blast. "We checked every hospital but have no idea where he is," a relative said. Pooja searched for three family members - her uncle Dileep Gosai, 45, brother Deepak Parsvan, 25, and cousin Naga Parsvan, 22 - missing since morning. "Only one of our family got out alive," she said. Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy will visit the hospital and meet victims' families Tuesday. He directed the health minister, chief secretary and DGP to oversee rescue and relief efforts. A five-member committee was formed to investigate the cause of the explosion and recommend preventive measures. Sigachi Industries, which manufactures microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), informed stock exchanges about an "accident in the vicinity" of its plant in Medak district. Ahmedabad customs seize smuggled goods worth Rs 163 crore in Gujarat
Ahmedabad: Signalling the scale of smuggling operations in Gujarat, the Ahmedabad Customs recently seized Rs 163 crore of smuggled goods, including 8 million counterfeit cigarettes, psychotropic substances, and luxury watches. The data was revealed by the chief commissioner of customs Ahmedabad zone, Pranesh Pathak, at a seminar conducted in the city on Monday. "As India's economy grows, it is becoming a bigger target for global smuggling networks. These crimes threaten public health, national security, and investor confidence," said Pathak. The announcement comes alongside new data from FICCI's anti-smuggling arm CASCADE, which pegged the size of India's illicit trade economy at Rs 7.98 lakh crore in FY23 in a report released by them. The five sectors most affected are FMCG (packaged foods), FMCG (personal and household care), alcohol, tobacco, and textiles and apparel. In fact, textiles and apparel alone accounted for over Rs 4 lakh crore of this, followed by FMCG products, alcohol, and tobacco, the report suggests. "Smuggling thrives on cost arbitrage created by high indirect taxes and regulatory gaps. When duties on products like tobacco, liquor, and gold are significantly high, it creates strong incentives for illegal trade, undermining legitimate businesses and eroding govt revenues. The disparity between legal and illegal market pricing not only distorts fair competition but also exposes citizens to spurious goods, which can become a grave public health issue. Tackling this issue requires a balanced tax policy along with robust enforcement and greater inter-agency coordination," said P C Jha, former chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes (CBIC). Pathak said enforcement was stepped up across land, sea, and air routes. "Recent seizures show just how aggressive and organised these networks have become," he said, referring to the Godhra Customs operation involving counterfeit cigarettes worth over Rs 150 crore.
