Lions, Chargers set to play in NFL's annual Hall of Fame game

Fox News23-04-2025

The Los Angeles Chargers will take on the Detroit Lions in the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on July 31, the Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.
It will be the first time since 2000 that an NFL preseason game will be played in the month of July.
Tight end Antonio Gates, a former Charger, will officially be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Aug. 2, alongside cornerback Eric Allen, defensive end Jared Allen and wide receiver Sterling Sharpe.
The Lions will be the game's designated home team after they went 15-2 last season and were the NFC's No. 1 seed. They were upset in stunning fashion by the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round.
Following the loss, both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn departed for head coaching jobs. Johnson joined the Lions' division rival, the Chicago Bears, while Glenn took the New York Jets' head coaching position.
As for the Chargers, they are coming off a campaign where they went 11-6 and made the playoffs in head coach Jim Harbaugh's first season with the team. They lost in the Wild Card Round to the Houston Texans, a game in which quarterback Justin Herbert struggled mightily.
Over 17 regular-season games, Herbert threw just three interceptions, but in the Chargers' 32-12 playoff loss, he tossed a career-high four interceptions.
This will be the fourth trip to Canton for the Lions and the third for the Chargers. Detroit last played in the game in 1991, beating the Denver Broncos 14-3. The last appearance for the Chargers was a 21-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in 1994.

Top 10 injury news of the Lions 2024 season No. 8: Christian Mahogany's delayed debut

Top 10 injury news of the Lions 2024 season No. 8: Christian Mahogany's delayed debut Mahogany had mononucleosis that wiped out over half his rookie season Christian Mahogany among guards in Week 16: 🦁 76.2 PFF grade (T-9th) 🦁 82.5 pass-blocking grade (9th) 🦁 33 pass-blocking snaps 🦁 1 pressure allowed — PFF DET Lions (@PFF_Lions) December 24, 2024 Christian Mahogany was drafted in the 6th-round of the 2024 draft with the hopes he would challenge for a backup role at offensive guard behind the two entrenched starters Graham Glasgow and Kevin Zeitler. However, an unexpected illness delayed his debut in the NFL. Medical history Immediately before training camp started, Mahogany was diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis (aka mono). While mono is rarely a serious issue, it can keep a player out of action for a while due to splenomegaly. See my full article detailing the infection here. Impact on season The mono kept him out all of training camp and landed him on the NFI (non football injury) list to start the season. His practice window did not open until October 8 (week 5). His first appearance in a game wasn't until November 24 (week 12) when he played four special teams snaps. For a rookie to miss all of camp and a large portion of the early season, it seemed a long-shot for him to find an impactful role on the team due to both physical and mental preparedness. Thus, it was surprising that he made an appearance as the primary OG backup on December 5 (week 14) when starting RG Kevin Zeitler left briefly for a suspected eye issue. Two games later on December 22 (week 16) vs the Bears, Mahogany made his big debut when he started and played 100% of offensive snaps due to a Graham Glasgow injury. His performance was impressive - especially since he had missed so much time earlier in the year. Here he is at LG showing nimble feet in that game against the Bears... Very impressed from what I've seen from Lions LG 73 Christian Mahogany. Watch him on this zone run as he gets to the play side LB. Very good quickness and pad level to the second level. I believe he's supposed to block the backside LB but either way, he's impressive! #OnePride — Russell Brown (@RussNFLDraft) December 23, 2024 Mahogany followed up his regular season performance with another good starting performance in the playoffs when he played the entire game due to a Zeitler hamstring injury. Salary cap implications Going into the 2025 season, there are high hopes that Mahogany can take over a starting OG position. From a financial perspective, a 6th-round starter on the offensive line would be a huge benefit to the Lions salary cap. For comparison: Graham Glasgow signed a 3-year, $20 million contract to start at LG last offseason. Kevin Zeitler signed a 1-year, $6 million contract to start at RG last offseason. This offseason as an unrestricted free agent, he signed a 1-year, $9 million contract with the Titans. Trey Smith, OG of the Kansas City Chiefs, was recently franchise tagged at $23.4 million. Meanwhile, the 2025 cap hit for Mahogany will be less than $1 million as he enters the second year of his 4-year, $4.2 million rookie deal. With players like Aidan Hutchinson, Brian Branch, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta worthy of big extensions, every saved dollar matters. Outlook While the rookie debut was a good beginning, there are some question marks for Mahogany going forward. He only started two games all year so is far from proven yet. Medically, he has a history of a right ACL tear in 2022 and was playing with a right knee brace all last season for unknown reasons. The knee brace raises concerns there is a chronic knee issue that could cause problems over a long 17+ game season. Despite the concerns, there is plenty of optimism for Mahogany going into the next season. He was able to overcome an infection that sidelined him for months to become a quality, fill-in starter down the stretch. Last year's starting RG, Kevin Zeitler, left for the Titans in free agency this offseason opening the door for Mahogany to step through. This door was blown off the hinges when Frank Ragnow retired. During OTA two weeks ago, Mahogany was starting at the LG position with 2nd-round rookie Tate Ratledge at center and Glasgow at RG. Early indications are that Mahogany is in pole position to become a starter in 2025.

Broncos May Be In Strongest Division In NFL

Broncos May Be In Strongest Division In NFL originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A division that has been dominated by one team, the AFC West, may be the most competitive division in the NFL this season. The Kansas City Chiefs have won the AFC West since 2016 and dominated the division for the last decade. This seems like it will possibly come to an end, as all the other teams have finally made pushes to be able to contend. Advertisement The Los Angeles Chargers made it to the playoffs last season and have looked like they are moving in the right direction with their second-year head coach, Jim Harbaugh. They also have had one of the most talented QBs in the league in Justin Herbert, and they have worked the past few seasons to get him weapons like Ladd McConkey, Omarion Hampton, Mike Williams, and Tre Harris. With a full year under Harbaugh down, this seems like the best Chargers team since Philip Rivers was the quarterback. They have also done a good job of beefing up Herbert's protection and solidifying the defense. The Chiefs are 8-2 against the Chargers in their last ten games, but the Chargers are in a great position to start to turn that around. What will most likely be the worst team in the division may be better than people think. The Las Vegas Raiders have been making a lot of moves this offseason that already have them looking twice as good as last year on paper. They brought in Super Bowl-winning head coach Pete Carroll, and he has brought in a lot of talent. The Raiders traded for Geno Smith, whom Carroll coached in Seattle. They also drafted star running back Ashton Jeanty and wide receiver Jack Bech in the draft. This is to go along with Jakobi Meyers, who may be the most underrated receiver in the NFL, and Brock Bowers, who was one of the best offensive rookies in the league last year. Advertisement Defensively, they still have Maxx Crosby and Christian Wilkins, and they brought in players like safety Jeremy Chinn and Devin White during the offseason. The Raiders, who are normally immediately counted out of the division, have a new life with their new head coach, quarterback, and playmakers. The Chargers and Raiders have a good chance of being able to compete with the Chiefs, but the team that has the best chance of being a threat to the Chiefs in the AFC West is the team that came in third last year. The Denver Broncos' 10-7 record was half a game behind the Chargers and five games behind the Chiefs. Tina MacIntyre-Yee/Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The Broncos were still able to make the playoffs in quarterback Bo Nix's first season. Now the Broncos have only gotten better, and they are going to pose a big threat to the Chiefs next season. Advertisement The Broncos are set to have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL next season, they have Bo Nix with a year of experience, and they are still led by offensive guru Sean Payton. They went into the offseason needing some weapons and some playmakers on the defensive side of the ball, and that is exactly what they did. Offensively, the Broncos drafted RJ Harvey to be the team's new starting running back, drafted Pat Bryant, and signed Trent Sherfield Sr. to give Nix some receiving help. They also brought in Evan Engram to give Nix and Payton the tight end production that they were missing last season. Defensively, the Broncos spent their first-round pick on bringing in Jahdae Barron, they signed Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga, they re-signed DJ Jones, and they drafted Sai'vion Jones. These new additions, paired with playmakers they already have like Pat Surtain, Zach Allen, and Brandon Jones, are going to make an already good Broncos defense great. The Broncos went 3-3 in their division last season, splitting with the Chiefs and beating the Raiders twice. This season, they need to continue to give the Chiefs problems, dominate the Raiders, and they need to bounce back from getting swept by the Chargers last season. This is easier said than done, but with the young talent and the direction the Broncos seem to be moving, they should be predicted to be at least the second-best team in their division. Advertisement The Broncos made a lot of additions this season to the roster and the staff that will help them with their progression. The surprising play of Nix has accelerated their rebuild and put them in a position where they could be contenders this season. To do that, they are going to have to try to win the division, and if they can win the most competitive division in the NFL, they should have the utmost confidence come playoff time. Bucky Irving cannot wait to tell his kids about playing with Mike Evans

Bucky Irving cannot wait to tell his kids about playing with Mike Evans Bucs running back had a rookie season to remember in various ways. He started out as a backup before eventually earning a starting role with one of the best offenses in the NFL. By the end of the year, he also was apart of history watching Mike Evans tie Jerry Rice in the record books. Ironically, Irving scored a touchdown in Week 17 that almost cost Evans that history, but that won't change how much regard he holds the future Hall of Fame wide receiver. When speaking to the media at minicamp, Irving gave the Bucs legend about as high a compliment as someone could give. Evans has a chance to own the record of consecutive 1,000-yard receiving yard seasons if he does it again in 2025. It would certainly put him in the conversation for being among the best wide receivers all-time, even if others don't view him that way. For Bucky Irving and his kids, though, Evans will always be their greatest of all time, and that will be more than good enough.
