Employees close Interval Coffee after going unpaid for weeks. The owner plans to reopen

Yahoo03-04-2025

After going weeks without being paid, Interval Coffee employees closed the coffee shop's Bay View and East Side locations. The shops could reopen when the owner returns from a trip abroad.
Signs appeared on the doors of both locations on March 28 stating that the cafes were closed and employees were not being paid. The signs also shared employee Venmo accounts and Instagram pages, asking the public to support them.
Ashley Pappalardo, a barista trainer at Interval, said staff received their last paycheck on March 7 and their March 21 paycheck never came.
"I think we are all in shock," she said.
Employees decided to close the coffee shop a week after missing their paycheck. Pappalardo said the door signs were posted to let customers know Interval would be closed temporarily, but they were not intended to imply that Interval would be closed permanently.
She said they were waiting to learn more information from the owner.
Owner Ryan Hoban told the Journal Sentinel via email that he was in Honduras sourcing coffee. He said the cafes are closed while he is out of the country, but he plans to reopen them once he returns.
PRF Honduras, a coffee sourcing trip in Honduras on March 27 and 28, listed Hoban as an attendee, promoting his other business, Neighborly Coffee subscription.
Pappalardo said that some employees have moved on, especially those who rely on Interval for a majority of their income. But Pappalardo, who currently works for the company part time, said she would return if the payment issue was resolved and changes were made to ensure it didn't happen again.
"Most of us work there for the people who work there. All of my best friends that I've made since I've moved back to Milwaukee after school have been through the Interval community," she said. "I can't speak for everyone, but many of us do hope that Interval reopens. This is an unfortunate moment, regardless."
Aside from the latest incident, public records show that Interval Coffee has had a slew of financial troubles in the last few years.
The departments of Revenue and Workforce Development have filed a total of 37 complaints against Interval Inc. since 2019 for tax delinquency, according to Wisconsin court records.
The complaints prior to 2024 have been satisfied, but the two state entities have filed 15 complaints since March 2024, totaling more than $75,000 in delinquencies that have not been satisfied, according to records.
The Department of Workforce Development additionally had filed six cases against Hoban for tax delinquencies on unemployment compensation from 2021 to 2023. He satisfied all that debt, totaling $18,616, as of July 2024.

Jet-Set CEO's $3M Koenigsegg Jesko Ticketed in London While Dining Nearby

Read the full story on Modern Car Collector A £2.2 million Koenigsegg Jesko hypercar, owned by private jet mogul Ameerh Naran, was slapped with a parking ticket this week after being left on a Kensington street while its owner dined nearby. Naran, the CEO of luxury aviation brokerage Vimana Private Jets, parked the ultra-rare Swedish hypercar on Derry Street, just outside the trendy Dishoom restaurant in West London. Moments later, a Kensington and Chelsea traffic warden issued a bright yellow parking charge notice (PCN), placing it squarely on the carbon-fiber bonnet of the car—an image quickly shared online. With a fine of up to £160 (reduced to £80 if paid within two weeks), the penalty is a small price to pay compared to the Jesko's jaw-dropping $3 million valuation. Powered by a 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8, the Jesko produces 1,280 horsepower on standard fuel—or up to 1,600 hp on E85—and is capable of reaching 62 mph in under three seconds. According to his Instagram posts, Naran, 39, was enjoying lunch at the nearby Rooftop Gardens while the parking incident unfolded. Originally from Zimbabwe, the entrepreneur built his jet charter empire after studying automotive design, and later launched his own hypercar company, Naran Automotive. Despite his aviation focus, cars have remained central to Naran's identity. A former aspiring racing driver, he once told Forbes that he dreamed of building supercars since childhood. His clients—ranging from royals to ultra-high-net-worth individuals—spend up to $1 million a month on private travel, and often shop at elite brands like Harrods, Ferrara Diamonds, and Asprey London. This isn't the first luxury car to run afoul of Derry Street's strict parking rules. Comedian Michael McIntyre had his £195,000 Mercedes-AMG GT R towed from the same location in May after parking in a police-only zone. In a city where even multi-million-dollar cars can't escape traffic enforcement, it seems not even the most elite wheels are above the rules. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter

Longtime Lower East Side Restaurant Pig and Khao Is Closing

Pig and Khao, Leah Cohen's Southeast Asian restaurant, which had been on the Lower East Side for more than a decade, is shutting down. An Instagram announcement stated that the restaurant's last day at 68 Clinton Street, near Rivington Street, is June 22. The lease had been up for renewal, and with the building 'requiring significant investment to remain operational,' they made the decision not to renew. Eater has reached out for more information. Cohen first opened Pig and Khao 13 years ago on the coattails of making a name on Top Chef. It had a dramatic first year before cementing itself as a longtime standby in the Lower East Side amidst so much change in the neighborhood. Cohen has expanded the Pig and Khao name over the years: She opened Piggyback, an offshoot concept, near Penn Station in 2020, with creative spins influenced by food in Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and her travels. Cohen also announced this week that she would be shutting this restaurant down on June 22 as well. It is survived by her last-remaining Manhattan operation: Pig and Khao on the Upper West Side, which opened a couple of months ago. In 2021, it was reported that Pig and Khao would undergo an unlikely partnership, for 'financial and strategic support,' combining forces with the speakeasy cocktail bar team PDT and chef Marc Forgione's restaurants under a newly-formed hospitality group, Apres Cru. Faicco's Sandwich Shop Abruptly Closes Sarasota Location

A beloved New York sandwich restaurant with a 120-year history has abruptly closed a location. "After a lot of thought, it's time to say goodbye. Faicco's Sandwich Shop will be closing its doors," the company wrote on Instagram of its Sarasota, FL restaurant. The Faicco's in New York still remains open. It has existed since 1900 in that city. "To our loyal customers: thank you. Whether you stopped by once or came in every week, your support meant everything to us. You kept the spirit of this place alive longer than the numbers ever made sense," the restaurant wrote on Instagram of the Florida store. "Running a small business is not for the faint of heart—and truthfully, there were more than a few days that tested our limits. In the end, it just wasn't sustainable. The love was there, but the business wasn't," the restaurant noted. "Still, we're proud of what we built and grateful for the community that built it with us. Thank you for the memories, the orders, the conversations, and the chance to be part of your days. Tomorrow, Saturday, May 31st, will be our last day," the post concluded. The website explained, "Our family opened Faicco's Pork Store in 1900 on Elizabeth Street in NYC. We've been proudly serving customers for over 120 years, and are excited to bring our recipes to Sarasota." According to Sarasota Magazine, the Florida location opened in 2022. The Italian hero sandwiches on the menu ranged from mortadella to chicken pesto, the magazine reported. A woman wrote on the restaurant's Instagram thread, "Very sad news indeed. Faicco's is the best! Grew up with your NY locations; was thrilled when you came to SRQ. So many of us patronized your Webber location, but we're all snowbirds, and know it's difficult to survive the off season. 😢"Faicco's Sandwich Shop Abruptly Closes Sarasota Location first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 6, 2025
