ADA-Compliant Web Design Checklist for Local Businesses

ADA-Compliant Web Design Checklist for Local Businesses

Imagine walking into a store only to find that the door is too narrow for a wheelchair, or the signs are too small to read. That's how many people with disabilities experience websites every day. For local businesses, having an ADA-compliant website isn't just about avoiding legal trouble—it's about creating an inclusive digital space where all customers feel welcome.
'Accessibility should be baked into every digital project from day one—not added later as an afterthought,' said a spokesperson from Overdrive Digital Marketing. 'When your site works for everyone, your business grows more sustainably and ethically.'
Here's a practical checklist to help ensure your website meets the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and delivers a better experience for everyone.
1. Provide Text Alternatives for Non-Text Content
Every image, video, and infographic should have alt text or captions describing what's happening. Screen readers rely on this information to narrate visual content to users with vision impairments.
Tip: Write alt text that conveys meaning. For example, 'Close-up of barista making latte art' is better than 'Image.'
2. Make Your Site Keyboard-Friendly
Some users navigate entirely with keyboards. That means your menus, links, and forms should all be accessible using only the tab, enter, and arrow keys.
Test It: Try navigating your website without a mouse. If you get stuck, users will too.
3. Use Sufficient Color Contrast
Ensure that text stands out clearly against background colors. Poor contrast can make content unreadable for users with low vision or color blindness.
Pro Tip: Use a contrast checker tool to confirm your site meets WCAG guidelines (minimum 4.5:1 for normal text).
4. Include Descriptive Link Text
Links labeled 'click here' or 'read more' aren't helpful to screen readers. Instead, use descriptive phrases like 'View our menu' or 'Download our pricing guide.'
5. Ensure Forms Are Accessible
All form fields should have clear labels, error messages should be easy to understand, and users should be able to submit forms without using a mouse.
Bonus: Use ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) labels to give additional context to screen readers.
6. Use Headings to Organize Content
Properly structured headings (H1, H2, H3, etc.) not only improve SEO but also help users who rely on screen readers to quickly scan and navigate your content.
7. Make Multimedia Content Accessible
Videos should include captions, and audio content should have a transcript. This ensures people with hearing impairments can access the information.
8. Provide a Skip Navigation Link
A 'skip to content' link at the top of your page allows keyboard users to bypass repetitive navigation and jump straight to the main content.
9. Avoid Content That Flashes or Blinks
Flashing content can trigger seizures in individuals with photosensitive epilepsy. If you must use animations, ensure they are subtle and can be paused or stopped.
10. Conduct Regular Accessibility Audits
Websites change frequently. Use tools like WAVE, Axe, or Google Lighthouse to audit your site and fix issues before they affect users.
Why It Matters for Local Businesses
An ADA-compliant website can help you: Avoid potential lawsuits and fines
Reach more customers, including the 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. with a disability
Improve your SEO rankings and user satisfaction

New jobs, retail expansion and more approved in ‘healthy' new Victorville budget

Victorville's budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year went into effect recently and city officials say it looks "healthy." A good indication of the city's "healthy fiscal position" is how the general fund and Measure P reserves are performing, Deputy City Manager Janelle Davidson said on the latest "What's the Tea VV" city podcast. The city has a 17% reserve target that it is "far exceeding," meaning it's in the green. "We've done a good job at watching our dollars and putting our money away to save," Mayor Liz Becerra said on the podcast. Highlights of the new approved budget include 17 new city positions and major capital projects like enhancements to the Victorville Animal Shelter and millions of dollars allocated to continued road projects. Davidson said she's most excited for the continuation of the new city library, which is scheduled to be completed at the end of the calendar year thanks to a $9 million grant from California State Library's Building Forward Program. Here are some other projects and updates that have been approved in the new Victorville FY 2025-26 budget that residents can look forward to. Major capital projects coming to Victorville The city plans to invest approximately $45 million in capital improvement projects during the FY 2025-2026 budget cycle. These investments include $3.3 million for major equipment purchases and $2.6 million for vehicle acquisitions. In addition, the following major capital projects are proposed for the upcoming fiscal year: Southern California Logistics Airport- Over $1 million is allocated in the new budget to upgrade the airport, including rehabilitation of access roads and parking lots, and roof replacement. Victorville Animal Shelter- $523,000 is set aside for the next fiscal year to enhance the new city-run Victorville Animal Shelter with ADA updates, air circulation systems, painting, flooring, and more. Engineering/road improvement projects- Millions of dollars of the Victorville budget will address either new or continued engineering projects, such as $12 million to the Mojave Drive Road Improvement Project and $632,000 for a wrought iron fence around the city hall parking lot. Major industrial developments Victorville is on track to welcome three major industrial developments, all currently in the plan review stage. These include American Jerky Company, SCLA Phantom and Turner and The Ottawa Business Center. American Jerky Company is planning the construction of a 238,798-square-foot industrial manufacturing warehouse on the east side of Hesperia Road, south of Nisqualli. At SCLA Phantom and Turner, developers have proposed a 1.1 million-square-foot industrial warehouse, marking one of the largest warehouse projects in the area. The Ottawa Business Center, slated for the north side of Ottawa east of Hesperia Road, will feature a 996,194-square-foot warehouse facility. Retail expansion, new restaurants Several retail and commercial developments have recently received permits and are now under construction. A Pollo Campero restaurant located on Mariposa in front of Vallarta Supermarket has broken ground. Sign up for our alerts to receive the latest updates on important news. Victorville is expecting its first Raising Cane's restaurant, which is currently under construction at Roy Rogers and Civic Center drives. Additionally, the northeast corner of Amargosa and Midtown will soon house a 26,355-square-foot, two-story medical office building, and a new ARCO AM/PM service station—with a convenience store, restaurant shell, canopy, and automated car wash—is also under construction. Hotel growth The hospitality sector is experiencing ongoing growth in Victorville. A new hotel and fuel station project is currently under plan review. The proposed development is located at the southeast corner of Dos Palmas and Highway 395, and will feature both a hotel and a convenience store with fueling services. Among the upcoming projects is a 5-story, 119-room Hampton Inn, which is already underway at the intersection of Locust and Mariposa roads. McKenna is a reporter for the Daily Press.
