Volvo turns heads after unveiling cutting-edge EV with jaw-dropping capabilities: 'This is a pleasant surprise'
Volvo's new ES90 electric vehicle boasts an impressive 435 miles of range and some surprising charging technology, according to Inside EVs.
The car's battery operates at 800 volts, which Volvo claims will allow it to go from a 10% to 80% charge in only 20 minutes. Other manufacturers have started moving to 800-volt batteries as well, including Porsche, GM, Tesla, Lucid, Stellantis, and Hyundai, though it remains a feature for higher-end models.
The benefit of fast charging times depends entirely on the availability of supporting chargers. Electric vehicle infrastructure continues to improve, so even if fast charging isn't available along your current routes, odds are it's on the way.
"The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a true premium Volvo car designed to elevate your quality of life," said Volvo CEO Jim Rowan.
Besides a sense of luxury, electric vehicles are a key way in which people can reduce atmospheric pollution. Consumer road travel produces a lot of pollution, and switching to an EV can help bring that amount down a lot. Gas-powered cars also pump out a lot of localized pollution, which is bad for health.

While the price was undisclosed, Volvo also recently unveiled the EX30 Cross Country, which should be a bit more affordable. The community reception to the ES90 has been generally positive.

One of the biggest supply chain problems for companies like legacy automaker Ford (F) is the access to rare earth minerals of the kind commonly used in electric vehicles. But a new report says that getting those rare earths out of one of their biggest sources, China, will actually be a little easier now. That news made investors breathe a little easier themselves, and shares were up nearly 2% in Friday afternoon's trading. Confident Investing Starts Here: China has brought out a set of temporary export licenses, reports note, which will offer up access to rare earths for each of the Big Three automakers, which include General Motors (GM) and Stellantis (STLA) as well. Reports note that at least some of the licenses are valid for the next six months, which should keep the lot of them in rare earths for some time to come. But it was hard not to notice that this change came just after a recent phone call between President Trump and President Xi Jinping, suggesting that that was part of some larger deal between the two. The move to restrict the supply of rare earth minerals has left many companies scrambling to fill in the supply gaps, and left many considering China a major bottleneck in the supply chain. With China producing about 90% of the world's supply, it is clear that they have the whip hand when it comes to these elements. We're All Getting Concerned About These Recalls You have likely noticed by now that the news around here, when it comes to Ford, seems to reference 'recall' a lot lately. Granted, some of these recalls have been minor to say the least; recalls that impact a handful of cars, or that are fixed with a software update. But not all of them have been so trivial, and some are starting to wonder if Ford's quality issues are starting to flare back up again. Daniel Ives, analyst with Wedbush Securities—who has a four-and-a-half star rating on TipRanks—recently noted that Ford was in a 'code-red situation…after a disaster quarter.' Rising warranty costs connected to all these recalls were hurting Ford, much as they did last year at this time. And with more recalls seeming to crop up, that could indeed prove a problem. However, bear in mind that the recalls are not all problems, especially when software is involved. So while Ford's recall count is on the rise, many of these recalls are much more simply addressed than they once were. Is Ford Stock a Good Buy Right Now? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on F stock based on two Buys, 12 Holds and three Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 16.87% loss in its share price over the past year, the average F price target of $9.71 per share implies 5.18% downside risk.

Geely-owned Volvo Cars has introduced a "world-first" multi-adaptive safety belt technology, set to debut in the fully electric Volvo EX60 in 2026. This innovative feature is designed to offer unprecedented protection by adapting to both the traffic environment and the individual characteristics of passengers, utilising real-time data from the vehicle's sensors. The multi-adaptive safety belt represents a significant advancement in automotive safety. It adjusts its settings in response to various factors, including the severity of a crash and the specific profile of the person wearing it. By considering attributes such as height, weight, body shape, and seating position, the system customises the level of restraint provided, aiming to minimise injury risks in the event of a collision. For instance, in a severe crash, a larger occupant would experience a higher belt load setting, which is crucial in reducing the likelihood of head injuries. Conversely, a smaller person in a less intense crash would benefit from a lower belt load setting, decreasing the chance of rib fractures. One-Off Porsche 963 RSP Is The Ultimate Roadgoing Racecar
It's here, and as expected, the Porsche 963 RSP is a one-off road-going monster based on the automaker's Le Mans Hypercar contender, created for none other than Roger Penske, who nearly became a professional racing driver himself. He and Porsche have enjoyed a long and successful motorsport relationship that stretches back to 1972, and with the pair still working together in endurance racing in 2025, it's only fitting that the man who helped Porsche achieve glory in motorsport is honored with a one-off car like no other. Porschephiles will know that Porsche famously did something similar in 1975, when the Count Rossi 917 was created for one wealthy enthusiast. Just as was the case then, this was no easy feat. To clear at least some speed bumps, the suspension was raised to its maximum ride height, and the Multimatic DSSV dampers were calibrated to their softest setting. Even so, some images reveal a car that barely clears small obstructions. Then again, we doubt Mr. Penske uses roads with lots of potholes very often. Changes were also made to the lighting and turn signal systems to ensure they're suitable for road use without dazzling or confusing other drivers. But what about the engine, you're asking? Well, the hybrid V8 derived from the 918 Spyder retains its standard race tune (which we suspect means 670 horsepower, per Balance of Performance regulations for the Hypercar class), but the mapping was changed for smoother power delivery. That sounds simple, but Porsche says that getting the powertrain to run on pump gas was "a significant undertaking." Porsche never implies that anything is impossible, but this must have been quite a challenge. Carbon fiber and Kevlar have similar qualities, but the latter is tougher and far more difficult to tint, so it's rarely used (or, more accurately, seen) in modern hypercars. But in racing cars, aesthetics will always take a back seat to performance and safety. Thus, most racecars are wrapped, not painted, which also allows manufacturers to get away with a rougher finish, since the goal is lightness and strength, not smoothness of surface. For a one-off road car as significant as the 963 RSP, a vinyl finish simply wouldn't do. Giving Porsche's paint specialists a chance to show off (or pull their hair out), the Paint to Sample color Martini Silver was expertly recreated according to records at the Porsche Museum, with a triple-layer lacquer encouraging Mr. Penske to use it on the road as often as possible, as intended. Disappointingly, Porsche has not revealed much of the rear of the car, but the planking/fin between the rear wing was removed to make the 963 look more like the 917. Inside, a lavish leather upholstery program has been carried out over the otherwise almost unchanged cabin, with the standard race wheel and dash being retained. A cupholder was fitted, and all the foam inserts were rewrapped, while the roof lining and A-pillars were retrimmed in matching light Alcantara, but there's no airbag or infotainment system. That's because, as a one-off, this received special approval from the government in France, where the 24 Hours of Le Mans is held and where the 917 Count Rossi lived. Other nods to the 917 Count Rossi include old-school Michelin logos on the tire walls, a Porsche enamel badge rather than a graphic, end plates for the ventilation system that mimic the fan atop the 917's flat-12 engine, and a bespoke toolset, as one would have expected in the gritty days of roadgoing endurance racers.
