'The Card Player' 4K UHD Blu-Ray Review - Dario Argento Takes His Giallo Antics Online

In Rome, Inspector Anna Mari receives a macabre surprise for her birthday when an email lands in her inbox from someone calling themself 'The Card Player', and claiming to be the one responsible for the recent kidnapping of a British tourist. In a sadistic twist, the kidnapper challenges the authorities to a game of online poker to determine whether the young woman lives or dies. When the Police Commissioner forbids his team to go through with the game, the maniac brutally slaughters the tourist before their very eyes via webcam, later dumping the body in a river. As more and more women are abducted from the streets of the Italian capital and subjected to the same treatment, Anna Mari joins forces with Irish policeman John Brennan and young poker whizz-kid Remo in an attempt to beat The Card Player at their own deadly game.
A later giallo offering from the master of the form, Dario Argento's (Deep Red, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage) THE CARD PLAYER takes all the familiar trappings of the genre and plants them firmly in an early 2000s milieu, complete with a fittingly pulsing, contemporary electronic score by Claudio Simonetti (Suspiria, Tenebrae). Co-scripted by regular Argento collaborator Franco Ferrini (Phenomena, Demons) and featuring gruesome corpse special effects from Sergio Stivaletti (Cemetery Man), Vinegar Syndrome is delighted to present THE CARD PLAYER in its world UHD debut, newly restored in 4K from the original camera negative and loaded with a full deck of both new and archival extras.

Video Quality
The Card Player comes to 4K UHD Blu-Ray from Vinegar Syndrome with a 2160p Dolby Vision/HDR transfer in 1.85:1 that is derived from a 4K scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative. The film was last released on Blu-Ray in 2022 by Scorpion Releasing from an older master that was decent but left room for improvement. This new 4K UHD release brings out so much more life that allows the film to flourish and impress. The presentation is impeccable throughout with image stability and delineation being top notch.
Instances of print damage have been mostly eradicated, although there is some lingering damage near the beginning of the film. Otherwise, overall clarity and detail are excellent. This transfer retains the natural film grain of the presentation with everything resolving seamlessly and consistently. Colors are deftly saturated to bring out the complexity of the environments and certain articles of clothing. Skin tones are natural with subtle facial features easily noticeable in close-ups. Black levels are deep with nothing in the way of crush, and highlights avoid any unsightly blooming. This presentation is a major win for fans of the film.
Audio Quality
This new 4K UHD Blu-Ray comes with a lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix in both Italian and English that captures the intention of the film as well as the source will allow. A personal pet peeve with a film this recent is the decision to film with actors in different languages and post-dubbing to match the language chosen. No matter which track you choose, there are going to be some characters who are dubbed. This is a side effect of the filming technique and not an issue with the disc.
That being said, the dialogue is strong, coming through clearly without being stepped on by the music or sound effects. The environmental effects are delineated nicely from the chatter at the police station to the train in the final segment. The track avoids any instances of age-related wear and tear or distortion. The music from Claudio Simonetti maintains a pleasing fidelity as it comes through the room. This is a track that represents the film as was intended by Argento. Newly translated optional Italian-to-English and English SDH subtitles are provided on this disc.
Special Features
Audio Commentary:
Film Historians Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson deliver a really great commentary track in which they discuss the divisive nature of the feature, how this finds Argento functioning in a very different mode, the shot composition of the feature, how this film evolved into something very different from the the original plans, the performances in the film and more. These two like the film quite a bit more than I did, but it is nice to hear different arguments as to why they think it succeeds.

A nearly nine-minute interview with 'Lucia Marini' in which she discusses where she was at this point in her career, her father writing a role specifically for her, the lighting and costumes in the film, what she represented in the film, how his style and temperament evolved from his earlier days, and more that is very insightful.
Archival Behind-the-Scenes Featurette:
A nearly ten-minute piece that gives a broad overview of the creation of the film.
Final Thoughts
The Card Player is an interesting giallo mostly due to the fact that it is made by the one and only Dario Argento. The legend does not seem to be comfortable working with stories in recent decades, as he has more of a classic sensibility that fits into a certain time period. This effort feels slightly stilted in its execution, yet there are undeniably some thrilling set pieces that will appeal to longtime fans of the filmmaker. Vinegar Syndrome has released a new 4K UHD Blu-Ray featuring a mostly great A/V presentation and a pleasing array of special features. If you are a completist for Dario Argento, this is the best release of the film.
The Card Player is currently available to purchase on 4K UHD Blu-Ray.

Police searching for suspect in the killings of a couple found dead at an Arkansas park

Police are searching for an unknown suspect in the killings of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, according to a release from Arkansas State Police Sunday. The Brinks were hiking in the Devil's Den State Park with their daughters, ages 7 and 9, who were not injured in the attack. The girls are safe with family members, police said. The park is in a remote and rural area, where the terrain is 'rugged, vegetation is thick and there is no cellphone service,' police said. Police were notified of the suspected double homicide around 2:40 p.m. Saturday. The suspect is described as a White male of medium build. Investigators said they believed he was wearing a long-sleeved shirt with sleeves rolled up, dark pants, a dark ballcap, sunglasses and fingerless gloves. He was carrying a black backpack and seen driving towards the park exit in a black four-door sedan that may have been a Mazda with its license plate covered by tape, police said. The vehicle may have been travelling on State Highway 170 or State Highway 220 near the park. The area has been cordoned off and police have asked visitors to the park to share any images they might have of the suspect from the park Saturday. Local residents have also been asked to check security and game camera footage. Police have increased law enforcement presence at state parks, said Shea Lewis, secretary of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism in the release. 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred at Devil's Den State Park. Our hearts are with the victims' loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The safety of our visitors and staff is our highest priority, and we are working closely with Arkansas State Police and various law enforcement officials as the investigation continues,' the statement read. The Brinks family had recently moved to Prairie Grove from another state, police added.

How bystanders cornered the suspect in the Michigan Walmart stabbing

By the time an employee in the checkout area yelled about a man with a knife, it was too late. Nearly a dozen people had been stabbed at the busy Walmart in Traverse City, a tourist town on the shore of Lake Michigan, by a man who appeared to have attacked people at random, the sheriff said. The suspect, 42-year-old Bradford James Gille of Afton, Michigan, had entered the store at 4:10 p.m. and waited inside for 35 minutes before carrying out the attack using a foldable knife, officials said. All the victims – who are between the ages of 29 and 84 – are expected to survive; one was treated and released from the hospital, two are in serious condition and the rest are in fair condition, said Dr. Thomas Schermerhorn, chief medical officer at Munson Medical Center. Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea praised bystanders who cornered the suspect in the parking lot and held him until law enforcement arrived. Gille faces one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder, Shea said Sunday. He is set to be arraigned early this week and faces life in prison, officials said. Bystander used grocery cart to help stop suspect Two of the bystanders who intervened Saturday were Matt Kolakowski and his brother-in-law, Chris O'Brien, who were in Traverse City for a family vacation and shopping at the Walmart for supplies for weekend. The men were there with Kolakowski's 13-year-old daughter and her friend. As they were checking out, they heard a frantic warning. 'He's got a knife!' Kolakowski heard a store employee yell. Seconds later, he said, the store erupted into panic as the attacker, who had just stabbed several people near the checkout, was still on the move. Kolakowski, a 39-year-old former Marine, said his instincts kicked in. He told his daughter and her friend to stay put, and he and O'Brien took off after the suspect. Kolakowski didn't have any kind of weapon on him, but he grabbed an empty grocery cart. As he ran, Kolakowski said he saw the attacker stab another man in the shoulder and an elderly woman in the back while fleeing the store. In the parking lot, Kolakowski said he rammed the attacker in the ankle with the cart. He lifted the cart over his head and attempted to slam it down onto the man, who scrambled away before he was hit. Kolakowski said he and others pursued the man as he weaved between large poles and cars in the parking lot. 'He was screaming something about him being a soldier, and that everybody in Walmart were bad people,' Kolakowski said. Another bystander, who Kolakowski later learned is also a Marine, drew a gun on the attacker. 'The other Marine told me that he just went shooting at a range, and he forgot to take his pistol off his hip,' Kolakowski said. 'That's what it all came down to.' Finally, the attacker dropped the knife, and Kolakowski – who told CNN he served in Iraq nearly 20 years ago – held him down until help arrived. 'I just turned into somebody that I haven't been in a long time and just stayed on top of him until the deputy ran up and jumped on top of him with a rifle in his face, and I helped the deputy arrest him,' he said. When Kolakowski told the officer he was a former Marine, the officer handed him some first aid supplies and asked him to help. He assisted police in treating the wounded, applying tourniquets to stabbing victims who were still in shock. 'It was just mass panic in the parking lot – ambulances, lights everywhere, sirens everywhere, blood everywhere, people getting loaded up on carts, put in ambulances,' Kolakowski said. 'It was quite the rush.' In the meantime, O'Brien said he ran back into the store to find the girls, who were frightened but safe. 'What they did was amazing,' Shea said of the people who stepped in. What we know about the suspect and motive The motive behind the attack is unknown, but the stabbings appeared to be random, Shea said. 'It appears that these were all random acts,' Shea said 'The victims were not predetermined,' and there's no indication of additional suspects, the sheriff added. Detectives, with assistance from the FBI, have interviewed Gille at length, and determining a possible motive will be part of the investigation, the sheriff said. It is unclear what Gille was doing in Traverse City, but there were indications he may have previously lived in the county and was 'somewhat familiar with the area,' Shea said. 'I'm not immediately aware of exactly why he came back here, or why he went to Walmart,' the sheriff added. Video shows the standoff with the attacker CNN obtained video of the confrontation with the attacker in the parking lot, showing several people yelling at him to 'throw the knife' away and lie on the ground. The video also appears to show several people attending to a victim nearby. Outside the Walmart, part of a larger shopping complex, emergency vehicles lined the parking lot as first responders secured the scene, according to video footage obtained by The Associated Press. Authorities were seen speaking with employees, many still clad in their blue vests and name tags, as the response shifted into an active investigation. Tiffany DeFell, 36, told the AP she was in the parking lot when the chaos around the attack erupted. 'It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out. … This is something you see out of the movies. It's not what you expect to see where you're living,' she said. Outcry over random attack in small community Residents of Traverse City, a small community on the shore of Lake Michigan, are now left grappling with what the sheriff called a 'very uncommon' act of violence in the area. Walmart corporate spokesperson Joe Pennington condemned Saturday's attack, saying in a statement to CNN, 'Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we're thankful for the swift action of first responders.' Officials and residents are expressing shock that such an attack happened in the community of about 16,000 that's known for its beaches, wineries and annual cherry festival. 'We'll continue working closely with law enforcement during their investigation,' he added. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer lamented the 'horrible news' of the attack and said, 'Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.' O'Brien, one of the bystanders, said he still can't understand what would drive someone to commit that kind of violence. 'The guy that had the gun showed great restraint, because I think everyone else would have pulled the trigger,' O'Brien said. 'Thank God the other Marine didn't pull the trigger, because now the families can actually get justice,' Kolakowski said. CNN's Zoe Sottile, Danya Gainor and Diego Mendoza contributed to this report.
