NPCI reports 42% jump in FY25 profit; revenue grows to Rs 3,270 crore

Time of India25-06-2025
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates India's homegrown Unified Payments Interface (UPI), reported a 41.7% jump in its net profit to Rs 1,552 crore for fiscal year 2025, according to data from rating agency
ICRA
.
As a not-for-profit organisation, NPCI does not report profits, but instead refers to them as a revenue surplus.
For the financial year ended March 2025, NPCI's standalone revenue rose 19% to Rs 3,270 crore from Rs 2,749 crore in FY24. Healthy internal accruals pushed up its net worth to Rs 6,412 crore as of March 31, ICRA noted.
NPCI generates revenue primarily by operating digital payment infrastructures such as UPI, IMPS (Immediate Payment Service), AePS (Aadhaar-enabled Payment System), BBPS (Bharat Bill Payment System), and NCMC (National Common Mobility Card). It earns a percentage of the transaction value processed by partner banks.
The total number of transactions processed by NPCI surged 33% to 21,360 crore in FY25 from 16,100 crore in FY24, the report noted.
The rise in NPCI's earnings comes at a time when payment firms have been pushing for the introduction of merchant discount rates (MDR) on
UPI transactions
, citing monetisation challenges.

MDR on UPI refers to the fee charged to merchants for processing digital payments made via the UPI platform.
However, earlier this month, the Finance Ministry clarified that UPI transactions will continue to remain free and dismissed speculation around MDR being introduced.
NPCI also earns revenue from product and membership fees collected from banks and fintech companies.
Established in 2008 by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks' Association (IBA), NPCI functions as an umbrella entity to build and manage the country's digital payments infrastructure. Launched in 2016, UPI, its flagship offering, allows real-time bank-to-bank transfers via mobile devices. As of May 31, 2025, it had 65 shareholders, including public sector, private, and foreign banks.
The platform saw rapid adoption following demonetisation, rising smartphone use, and the entry of private entities into the digital payments ecosystem. However, UPI's volume growth has started to slow as it approaches saturation,
ET reported on April 7
.
UPI has also faced multiple service disruptions in recent months, affecting users of platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, along with several banking apps. NPCI attributed the outage on April 12 to a surge in application programming interface (API) requests, particularly from certain banks overusing the 'Check Transaction' API, which led to a temporary system slowdown and reduced payment success rates.
In May 2025, UPI processed 18.6 billion transactions, with the total transaction value reaching Rs 25.14 crore. As per the latest numbers, PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm continue to dominate UPI volumes, followed by newer companies Navi, Flipkart-backed Super.Money, and Cred, which are trying to grow their share through cashback and reward-led incentives.
To support the UPI ecosystem, the Union Cabinet earlier this year approved a Rs 1,500 crore incentive scheme aimed at offsetting the cost of small-ticket digital transactions. However, fintech companies have argued that the fund is insufficient, given the scale and volume of the ecosystem.
NPCI currently has two wholly owned subsidiaries, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and NPCI Bharat BillPay Limited (NBBL). While NIPL is focused on expanding UPI and RuPay in international markets through partnerships, NBBL operates the infrastructure for digital bill payments, connecting utility billers with customers through third-party payment apps.
ICRA noted that NPCI must continue to strengthen risk management and upgrade its technology infrastructure to maintain its dominant position and support rising transaction volumes.

South Goa leads state's vegetable boom

Margao: South Goa has emerged as the key driver of the state's vegetable output. Govt data reveals a striking disparity in agricultural output between the two districts, with South Goa producing 1,427 metric tonnes (MT) of vegetables in 2024-25, nearly seven times North Goa's 192MT. With South Goa dominating in the agriculture sector, cucumber production reached 459MT in South Goa, while North Goa managed just 12MT. Similarly, bhendi (okra) production stood at 411MT in South Goa as against 117MT in North Goa. Of the total 208MT of vegetables exported through the Goa State Horticulture Corporation Limited (GSHCL), South Goa contributed 206MT, with cluster beans (87.5MT), bhendi (73.1MT), and cucumber (31.1MT) leading the export charts. The state directorate of agriculture reported that 80–85% of agricultural land is now mechanised, aided by subsidised tractors, tillers, transplanters, harvesters, and other modern tools. Govt's roadmap for the next decade is to expand the farm power to cultivable area ratio up to 2KW per hectare through advanced machinery suited for Goa's terrain and small landholdings. The focus areas will include setting up custom hiring centres in all talukas, boosting farmer training, and integrating precision farming technologies. In 2024-25, 1,192 farmers received assistance of Rs 81 lakh under the 'Promotion of Organic Farming 2018' scheme for purchasing organic inputs, and four farmers received Rs 22,000 for vermicompost units. The transaction underscores the resilience of the commercial office market in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), particularly in large-format, high-quality spaces catering to multinational occupiers. With global corporates increasingly consolidating operations into technology hubs like Navi Mumbai, such deals point towards sustained demand despite a hybrid work environment. Live Events Industry experts tracking the segment say that high-value, long-tenure leases in established business parks indicate occupiers' confidence in India's medium- to long-term growth story and their commitment to scaling local operations. ET's email queries to Dow Chemicals and Mindspace Business Parks remained unanswered. India's commercial office market recorded a landmark performance in the last financial year, with leasing activity reaching an all-time high. The surge was driven by a combination of expansion plans by global and domestic occupiers, portfolio consolidation, and the preference for high-quality, well-connected office spaces in major business hubs. The momentum is widely expected to carry forward into 2026, supported by sustained demand from key sectors such as global capability centres (GCCs), banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) institutions, flexible workspace operators, and leading Indian technology companies. These segments continue to account for the largest share of fresh leasing as well as renewals, underpinned by India's cost competitiveness, skilled workforce, and strong digital infrastructure.

Enterprises see AI's main value in better decision-making rather than as an automation tool: Survey

TIL Creatives All large enterprises covered in a survey see the main value of artificial intelligence in improving the decision-making process rather than its use as a pure automation tool, a business-to-business publication firm CIO & Leader said on Friday. Generative AI deployments have grown five times since 2023, transforming creative processes from marketing content to software code, and by the end of 2025, 30% of IT services will be fully automated by AI, the State of Enterprise Technology Survey 2025 said. The survey is based on insight received between May and July 2025 from over 350 chief IT officers or chief technology officers of enterprises having an annual turnover of over Rs 5,000 crore. "100% of enterprises cite better decision-making through insights as their top AI priority, reflecting AI's role as a cognitive enabler rather than just an automation tool," the report to the survey, 98.4% of enterprises prioritise cost reduction and process efficiency and operational agility or business resilience for AI adoption, showing the technology is valued for both immediate returns and long-term adaptability, while 96% see AI's value in customer experience enhancement, as it offers personalisation, service automation, and interaction insights."93% of enterprises will increase AI and analytics investment in 2025, with more than half projecting significant budget hikes," the survey said. The use of AI in IT operations has made it the most mature use for the technology, as 41% of enterprises are using it for functions such as automation, anomaly detection, and ticket triage. AI adoption in finance (31%) and customer service (28%) is being driven by forecasting tools, chatbots, personalisation, and self-service 90% of enterprises see data security and privacy as top barriers to AI adoption, followed closely by data quality 85% of enterprises prefer building AI capabilities internally, with 51 per cent rating it as their "most likely" approach. "The investment intent is crystal clear: Indian enterprises want AI embedded into the fabric of decision-making. The challenge is ensuring that these investments mature into governed, measurable programmes rather than isolated experiments," CIO&Leader, executive editor and research lead Jatinder Singh said.
