Sophie Cunningham leaves Fever's overtime win over Sun with a knee injury

Yahooa day ago
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Connecticut Sun with a knee injury, marking the latest injury to a Fever squad that has already been decimated.
The injury occurred during the second quarter of Indiana's 99-93 overtime victory when Connecticut guard Bria Hartley drove to the basket, fell and collided with Cunningham's leg on her way down.

Cunningham stayed down clutching her right knee in pain as the rest of the team went to the other side of the court. She was helped off the court and into the locker room, wearing a towel over her head.
Cunningham's injury is the latest for the Fever, who have lost most of their guards due to injury. Caitlin Clark has missed most of the season with a groin injury, while the other two point guards — Aari McDonald and veteran Sydney Colson — both suffered season-ending injuries in a loss to the Phoenix Mercury earlier this month. Colson went down with an ACL tear, while McDonald suffered a broken bone in her foot.
Last week, the Fever signed veteran guard Odyssey Sims to a hardship contract to help replenish their point guard depth. Sims made her first start for Indiana on Sunday.
After Cunningham went down, the Fever battled back to win. Despite Connecticut being up by as many as 21 points, Indiana forced OT after a stellar 32-point fourth quarter. Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell finished with 38 points, tying a season high; 34 of those points came after halftime.

Sky Coach Makes Major Announcement About Angel Reese's Possible Return

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. It's been nearly three weeks since Angel Reese last suited up for the Chicago Sky. The 23-year-old forward has been sidelined since July 29 with a back injury that's kept her out of commission for much of the time since the All-Star break in mid-July. Losing Reese, who leads the team in pointers per game (14.2), rebounds per game (12.6), and assists per game (3.7), was a big blow to the Sky, who have went 1-5 without her during their recent stretch and have won just one of the 10 games Reese has missed this season. More WNBA: Caitlin Clark Makes Bold WNBA MVP Declaration After Fever-Sun There hasn't been any clear timeline of when Reese could return, but after videos emerged on social media of Reese practicing with the team as she eases her way back into things, head coach Tyler Marsh gave the most promising injury update on Reese to date. "She looked great," Marsh told reporters on Monday, via Chicago State of Mind Sports. "She fit right in. It's like she hadn't missed any time off. The Chemistry is still there with her teammates, and she picked up on stuff we were doing, picked up on the game plan going into tomorrow. So, we'll continue to see how she feels tomorrow at shootaround and gauge it day by day still. It's possible [she can return Tuesday]." While Ariel Atkins (12.9 points, 3.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds per game), and Kamilla Cardoso (12.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists per game) have both performed admirably in Reese's absence, it's clear the Sky are a much weaker team without Reese on the floor. More WNBA: Aliyah Boston Breaks Caitlin Clark's Franchise Record in Historic Fever Comeback The 2025 season has been a bit of a disappointment for Chicago, which fired Teresa Weatherspoon, who went 13-27 in her lone season as head coach last year, and replaced her with Marsh, who was hired away from the Las Vegas Aces back in November to replace her. Chicago also parted ways with its top player last year as well in Chennedy Carter, who signed with Wuhan Shengfan of the Women's Chinese Basketball Association after leading Chicago in scoring in 2024. The shake up hasn't proved fruitful and the Sky have regressed in Year 2 of the Reese era. What happened to Sophie Cunningham? Ex-Mercury star down with knee injury

Former Phoenix Mercury star Sophie Cunningham joined her Indiana Fever teammate Caitlin Clark on the sideline after she suffered an injury to her right knee Sunday, Aug. 17, during the Fever's 99-93 overtime win over the Connecticut Sun. Cunningham was scheduled for an MRI Monday, Aug. 18, according to Fever coach Stephanie White. The second-quarter injury occurred when Sun guard Bria Hartley crashed into Cunningham's knee as Hartley attempted to score. Cunningham clutched at the knee and made her way toward the baseline out of bounds area, then fell to the court. Cunningham has been a vital part of the Fever this season, averaging 8.6 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game and 1.2 assists per game in his first season in Indiana. Sophie Cunningham injury reaction Sophie Cunningham's family members, and others, were livid at Hartley and the WNBA for the injury. Lindsey Cunningham, Sophie's sister, posted: ".@WNBA maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you . @sophaller" Paula Cunningham, Sophie's mother, reportedly posted in a now-deleted post: "Hartley is a disgruntled player have trouble everywhere she goes; she's plain mean and plays out of control." Cunningham played with the Mercury from the 2019-24 seasons, averaging 7.9 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game and 1.4 assists per game with Phoenix. Fantasy Football Video: Overlooking a healthy Isiah Pacheco could prove costly this draft season

The expectations for the Kansas City Chiefs for most of Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid's tenure has been Super Bowl or bust. The Chiefs enter this season trying to get back to the Super Bowl after falling to the Philadelphia Eagles last season. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] One element from the Chiefs' offense that was missing in 2024 was the presence of a solidified run game. For most of the previous two seasons, the backfield had been anchored by Isiah Pacheco. That wasn't the case last year, in large part due injury, but can fantasy football managers count on Pacheco bouncing back this season? Matt Harmon and Justin Boone looked at Pacheco's rising ADP on the latest episode of the Yahoo Fantasy Forecast. Boone points out that Pacheco is healthy and that his competition in the backfield is pretty meager. Behind Pacheco are veterans Kareem Hunt and Elijah Mitchell, as well as rookie Brashard Smith. While Hunt and Mitchell could challenge for touches, and Smith has some pass-catching chops, it's really Pacheco's RB1 role to lose. In 2024, Pacheco missed most of the season due to a fractured fibula sustained early in the season. He was able to return in Week 13 after missing nine games but didn't look like the same player. He would end up finishing the season with 3.7 yards per carry and was barely a factor in Kansas City's run to the Super Bowl. Boone will gladly take Pacheco as his RB2 in drafts this season and Harmon later chimes in that this is the Chiefs, they're going to be a top-5 projected offense in terms of points, and having the RB1 on said offense wouldn't be a bad thing. Pacheco's current ADP has him as the RB24, right at the edge of the RB2 conversation in 12-team leagues.
