Cate Blanchett Doesn't Know If Her ‘Squid Game' Cameo Will Lead to More (But She'd Like it to)

That shocking finale coda of Hwang Dong-hyuk's Squid Game series left many curious about what it meant for the American spin-off Netflix has in the works. When the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) pauses next to an alley in downtown Los Angeles, you witness, along with him, the Squid Game recruitment ritual being administered by a new face: Cate Blanchett, wearing a suit and offering up the Ddakji slaps. It's hard to believe the Academy Award-winning actress was only recruited for a one-off cameo right after she claimed to be retired. In an interview with Variety, Blanchett discussed how the guest role came to be and what it might mean for her future in the franchise. 'Because it's such a cult series and they were shooting in L.A. of all places, everyone was on a need-to-know basis,' she said of the 'out of the blue offer' that stipulated she bring her own suit. 'I got a couple of storyboards. I had to [learn to] play the game very quickly. I had to practice and practice. I knew there were four or five setups that they were going to do, and I knew what they needed from every shot, and then I was given the sides. But it was one of the more mysterious jobs.' Blanchett explained that while her role was a feature on the series finale, she'd consider returning. 'I am wildly open to anything,' she shared with the trade, 'and in a world that is so beautifully, magically created like that, for sure. They're amazing world-builders, and that series has been eaten alive. I don't think there's a corner of the globe that it hasn't touched in some way.' What's so playfully suspicious about her answers is that Netflix has enlisted David Fincher for his take on the American Squid Game spin-off. And he happens to be a filmmaker Blanchett worked with on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, so what gives? Nothing, apparently, just coincidence. The actress affirmed to Variety, 'I mean, I'd love to work with David again. It's been ages. But no, I don't know anything more than you do. I'm not being coy. I really don't.' Want more io9 news? Where Was Alien: Earth Filmed? All Filming Locations Listed

Alien: Earth is the highly anticipated spin-off series based on the Alien franchise, and is scheduled to premiere on August 12, 2025. The new series is being spearheaded by Noah Hawley, who also created shows like Fargo and Legion, with original Alien movie Ridley Scott serving as an executive producer. Unlike previous installments, the show takes place mainly on Earth, where a spaceship, carrying samples of a deadly species, has crashed into a city. This makes for a noticeable change of setting for the franchise, and many fans are curious about the filming locations for the show. All filming locations where Alien: Earth was filmed Krabi Krabi lies in the southern part of Thailand and is filled with beautiful beaches, stunning limestone karsts, and mangroves. The beaches are renowned for their turquoise waters and pristine white sand shores. Places like Railay Beach, Ton Sai Beach, and Ko Phi Phi Lee are to be featured on the show. Phang Nga Phang Nga is in the northern part of Thailand and offers more beautiful locations. This place has a more dramatic look that works incredibly well for tense action-packed scenes, which should fit right into the Alien franchise. Surat Thani Surat Thani is a province in the southern part of Thailand. It is yet another location filled with breathtaking tropical landscapes. The shooting took place in its natural landscapes, including national parks for their dense forests and waterfalls. Phuket Phuket's islands, like Koh Yao Noi and Koh Roi, were also part of Alien: Earth's filming locations. Specifically for its eighth episode, the show utilized a massive crew for the shoot, spanning multiple days. (via Thaiger) The first two episodes of Alien: Earth are being released on August 12, with a new episode every week thereafter. Starting August 12, you can stream the show every Tuesday on Hulu. Stranger Things creators say one of its key cast members has worked out what the hit Netflix show's live-action spin-off is about: 'Nobody else has figured it out'

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A key Stranger Things actor has already guessed a big detail about one of its spin-offs Finn Wolfhard is the only person who's worked out the outline of its live-action offshoot It's been described as "like David Finch's Twin Peaks" The final season of Stranger Things' mainline show isn't out yet, but one of its key cast members has already worked out what its live-action spin-off is about. Speaking as part of a Variety profile piece on Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler in the popular Netflix show, its creators Ross and Matt Duffer revealed Wolfhard had correctly guessed what said offshoot's premise entails. First, a bit of background on that untitled project: in late 2022, Netflix revealed that the Duffer brothers were developing two spin-offs of their massively successful supernatural sci-fi horror series via their Upside Down Pictures production company. One of those, titled Tales From '85, is an animated project that'll tell an original story between Stranger Things' third and fourth seasons, and feature many of the show's primary cast. It's unclear if they'll be voiced by the same actors who played them in the main series, though. However, confirmation that the other project is a live-action one notwithstanding, we've heard nothing else about one of the best Netflix shows' other offshoots. Well, until today (August 5), anyway. So, what is it? The Duffers didn't provide any answers when asked by Variety, but did admit that Wolfhard had perfectly surmised what the siblings were planning to do from a storytelling perspective. "Nobody – not Netflix, not any of the producers, not any of the directors, not any of the actors – nobody else has figured out what the spinoff is," Ross Duffer said. "Finn figured it out, which is pretty remarkable. We've mind-melded with this kid a bit." Interviewed as part of the same Variety article, Wolfhard was a bit more forthcoming on one of the projects that'll follow in Stranger Things season 5's footsteps. Indeed, while he didn't state what the Duffers were planning, he gave us a tantalizing glimpse into the kind of story – or, rather, stories – they're looking to tell. "[It's] like David Lynch's Twin Peaks," the young star teased. "Sort of an anthology and different tones, but similar universe or same universe. I think [it'll be] set in different places and all tied together through this mythology of the Upside Down. Don't even talk about Hawkins [and] don't have any mention of our characters. "They were toying around with ideas in case Netflix wanted them," he continued. "I'm sure they do and I'm sure it will happen, but there's nothing official. I think the coolest way, the way that I would do it, there has to be labs everywhere. If there was one in Hawkins, there's one in Russia. Where else could they be?" An anthology series set in the Stranger Things universe with a 'new weird' genre vibe similar to that of one of the best shows of the last 40 years? Sign me up. As for the fifth and final season on Netflix's incredibly popular TV Original, its launch is only a few months away now. Indeed, Stranger Things season 5's trio of release dates were revealed in June, and its first volume, which comprises four episodes, will debut on one of the world's best streaming services this November. More recently, we were finally treated to the first official trailer for Stranger Things season 5, which only heightened my excitement for its last hurrah. After a three-and-a-half year wait for it, here's hoping Stranger Things 5 lives up to the hype. You might also like Stranger Things season 5's 12-month shoot yielded 650-plus hours of footage for its eight 'blockbuster movie' episodes, the popular Netflix show's creators say Stranger Things season 5 will be released in 2025 – and Netflix has finally lifted the lid on some key details about its plot First look at Stranger Things season 5 reveals new characters, fan-favorite team-ups, and a time jump Solve the daily Crossword
