PCOS In Women Tied To Attention, Cognitive Issues: Study

NDTV26-05-2025

New Delhi:
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS, a common endocrine disorder in women, can affect attention and other cognitive abilities, according to a study by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay on Monday.
Women with PCOS often suffer from irregular or absent periods, polycystic ovaries, and increased levels of male hormone (androgen).
While previous research showed an increased level of anxiety and depression among women with PCOS, the new study focussed on attention -- the precursor for all vital cognitive processing such as receiving, understanding, and making sense of the information.
Maitreyi Redkar and Prof Azizuddin Khan from the Psychophysiology Laboratory, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the IIT Bombay assessed two groups of participants -- 101 women with PCOS and 72 healthy women.
The team mapped their hormonal levels before the study and subjected them to attention tasks. They found that PCOS are slower to react and more easily distracted than their healthy counterparts.
Women with PCOS showed over a 50 per cent slower response and made about 10 per cent more errors than the healthy ones in the focused attention test.
Similarly, PCOS women performed about 20 per cent slowly, with 3 per cent extra errors in the divided attention task, the researchers said.
"The cognitive experiments are specifically designed to capture the subtle millisecond-level differences in how individuals respond to critical stimuli. These minute delays reveal significant impairments in attention, which may impact our real-life functioning," said Prof. Khan, who led the study.
"In the specific context of focused attention, it is not just about concentrating on the task at hand to respond at the right time, but also inhibiting irrelevant distractors," he added.
The researchers explained that the hormonal imbalance associated with PCOS could lead to decreased alertness and longer reaction times. Along with elevated androgen levels, the participants with PCOS had insulin resistance that is linked to attention.
Insulin resistance causes poor glucose metabolism and affects brain cell (neuron) activity, leading to poor performance in focused attention tasks.
Mental fatigue linked to PCOS, such as anxiety and frustration, makes divided attention tasks more challenging.
The finding highlights that decreased accuracy in divided attention tasks may influence working memory, which hinders holding the information temporarily. This makes daily activities such as keeping track of directions while driving or remembering a phone number to dial more challenging, the researchers said.

PCOS and pregnancy: Expert tips to improve your chances of conception

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the fastest-growing diagnoses seen in recent years, and this is particularly true for young girls. It can affect them just after their first menstrual cycle, or women who are actively trying to conceive. PCOS has become one of the most prevalent hormonal disorders in reproductive-aged women, and it can cause problems getting pregnant. Just because someone has PCOS does not mean that they cannot get pregnant; however, many women with PCOS can conceive and go on to have healthy pregnancies with positive lifestyle adjustments, medical help, and emotional care. Getting diagnosed early and treated correctly can go a long way in achieving healthy fertility and overall health. 1. Balanced, nutrient-rich diet Most people know a balanced diet can help keep many physical health problems at bay, and the same goes for PCOS. A healthy diet can help with hormone regulation over time and lead to improved reproductive health, so it plays an important role in effectively managing your condition. Eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats. Steer clear of processed foods and sugar, which are of immense help in controlling insulin and blood sugar levels. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The addition of low-GI foods, slow-digesting foods that never generate an immediate burst of blood sugar, is particularly beneficial in women with PCOS. 2. Drug treatment for induction of ovulation In addition to lifestyle changes, fertility medications may be required. To some, in addition to metformin, doctors can give ovulation medications such as clomiphene citrate or letrozole that stimulate ovulation to be stimulated. Injectables or reproductive technology, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF), may be applied by others. 3. Healthy Weight Keeping a healthy weight is essential in the management of PCOS and overall fertility. It maintains a normal Body Mass Index (BMI) as well as overall health. Weight loss has been found to aid in weight control with PCOS, since weight control can be more challenging for individuals with this condition because of hormonal imbalances. Although it might be more challenging to achieve weight maintenance, it is not impossible. If an individual suffering from PCOS puts on extra weight, it also raises their insulin resistance, and as a result, hormonal imbalance and ovulation are affected. Losing just 5–10% of weight by altering lifestyle habits and maintaining a balanced diet has been proven to make a huge difference. It might make periods normal, and therefore, an individual might get pregnant without undergoing assisted procedures. 4. Daily Exercise Exercise not only aids in weight maintenance but also improves insulin sensitivity and assists in keeping your hormones balanced; both are helpful in managing PCOS. Try to move every day, and this could be walking, cycling, swimming, aerobics, or something playful like Zumba. Even mundane daily tasks can help; accumulating 30 minutes of moderate activity most days (a minimum of four times a week) will enhance overall health, reduce stress, and enhance your mood, which is fertility-friendly too. As with all new exercise regimens, it's wise to consult your physician first to find an optimal match for your body's requirements. 5. Track your cycle Irregular ovulation is also one of the largest barriers to getting pregnant with PCOS. Basal body temperature, cervical mucus, or ovulation predictor kits will give you an idea of what's going on with your cycle so that you can get ready for when you are most fertile. Fertility apps and monitors are handy tools, too, but if you want a better sense of whether you actually do have irregular cycles, a trip to a fertility specialist will be more useful. Healing PCOS with strength: Mindset, motivation, and customized treatment PCOS pregnancy can also be draining physically and emotionally, and therefore, emotional support must also come under remaining healthy. Whether it is an honest discussion with your spouse, presenting yourself for support, or discussing it with a counselor, being surrounded by supportive people can make the sense of isolation less painful and more acceptable. Patience and persistence are also worth it—conceiving takes time, and the process is prolonged and indefinite. But remaining committed to your health goals and riding it out with persistence may possibly lead to the desired result. It is also comforting to know that PCOS manifests differently in every woman, and treatment is not a template. What suits one will not suit another, and as such, personal consultation with a doctor or fertility expert in formulating a tailored care plan is essential to safety and efficacy. Although PCOS complicates the situation in your journey to conception, it does not eliminate the opportunity to become pregnant. You can have a pregnancy with a healthy, holistic approach, with proper medical advice, and with emotional assistance. Each step you take to diversify your diet, remain fit, lower stress levels, or engage competent professionals to lead you along the way leads you to success. Further still, you are improving your overall health, which empowers you and makes you more resilient. Your outward journey towards motherhood with PCOS is towards the healthier, more empowered version of you, as opposed to fertility alone. Meet Indian genius who scored 720/720 in NEET-UG, cracked IIT-JEE with 99.9 percentile, studied only 4 hours a day with no fixed routine, he is... Getting into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is a dream for many students in India. The entrance exams, JEE Main and JEE Advanced are among the toughest in the world. At the same time, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the main path to becoming a doctor in India. While most students focus on just one of these, Mrinal Kutteri managed to clear both. Mrinal comes from Hyderabad and lives with his parents, younger brother, and grandparents. His family originally hails from Kerala, and interestingly, no one in his close family is a doctor but his interest in science began early. In classes 8 and 9, he started enjoying biology and chemistry. By the time he entered class 11, he had set his goal to prepare for NEET. In a 2021 interview with India Today , Mrinal shared that he first thought about becoming an army doctor because he wanted to combine medicine and adventure. However, over time, his focus shifted more toward the medical field alone. He also said that seeing doctors fight the COVID-19 pandemic inspired him even more to choose this path. How Mrinal Kutteri balanced studies during the pandemic When the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to shut down, students across the country had to switch from classroom learning to online classes. This sudden change affected many, but Mrinal Kutteri welcomed it at first. Mrinal shared that in the beginning, he actually enjoyed the lockdown. However, this shift soon affected his academic performance, and he realized he needed to get back on track. Though it took some time at the beginning, he eventually got into a better routine. Interestingly, Mrinal didn't follow a strict study timetable like many other toppers. He admitted that he liked a flexible approach to learning. According to him, trying to stick to a tough schedule that he couldn't follow would only lead to stress and waste time. Instead, he chose to study in a way that suited him best, based on his energy and interest levels each day. Mrinal Kutteri's study approach that led to NEET AIR 1 In a 2021 interview with India Today , NEET topper Mrinal Kutteri shared how he followed a unique and stress-free way of studying. Instead of having a strict daily timetable, he chose a flexible method. Each day, he would set a small goal for himself, and how he completed it was entirely up to him. 'There were many days when I couldn't complete what I planned,' Mrinal admitted, 'but I didn't feel discouraged. I was okay with that, and I think that really helped me stay calm and focused.' His study routine changed often. Some days, he was very productive, while on others, he found it hard to study at all. On average, Mrinal studied for about four hours a day, and on his best days, he went up to five hours, but never more than that. Contrary to the notion that students must sacrifice hobbies during intense exam preparation, Mrinal ensured a balance between academics and leisure. He enjoyed binge-watching comedy shows on Netflix and Prime, using entertainment as a means of relaxation and motivation. Even for other tough exams like KVPY and JEE Main in Class 12, he didn't put in extra hours beyond his NEET prep. Still, he managed to score an amazing 99.9 percentile in JEE Main. But his biggest success came with NEET 2021, where he achieved a perfect score of 720 out of 720, securing All India Rank 1.

IIT Guwahati Researchers Use Clay-Based Method To 'Sculpt' Affordable Covid Testing Process

Last Updated: The IIT Guwahati team meticulously investigated how bentonite clay interacts specifically with SARS-CoV-2 Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have developed an innovative and cost-effective method for detecting SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19. This novel technique uses a combination of bentonite clay and saltwater, offering a simpler and more affordable alternative to conventional diagnostic tools such as PCR and antigen tests. Their findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal Applied Clay Science, have the potential to revolutionise virus detection, particularly in resource-constrained settings and for future pandemic preparedness. This groundbreaking method hinges on the principle of sedimentation. Bentonite clay is renowned for its exceptional absorbent properties and its capacity to bind with various substances, including heavy metals and pollutants. Building on previous research suggesting that clay particles could interact with viruses, the IIT Guwahati team meticulously investigated how bentonite clay interacts specifically with SARS-CoV-2. Their research revealed that when the virus is present in a neutral pH saltwater solution at room temperature, it binds effectively with the clay particles. This binding accelerates sedimentation, with virus-laden clay particles settling more rapidly. By observing and measuring this accelerated sedimentation, researchers can accurately determine both the presence and concentration of the virus in a sample. The implications of this discovery are substantial, say some experts. While PCR tests are highly accurate, they are costly, require specialised equipment and trained personnel, and often depend on significant infrastructure, limiting their accessibility in remote or under-resourced areas. Antigen tests, while faster, can be less sensitive than PCR. In contrast, the IIT Guwahati method requires minimal equipment, is inherently affordable, and offers a potentially rapid diagnostic solution suitable for widespread deployment.
