From Dreams to Reality: Newark Valley's own Cha Gardner heads to NCAA Tournament
NEWARK VALLEY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – One-time Section IV girls basketball star Cha Gardner is now preparing herself for the NCAA Tournament in just a few days.
The Newark Valley Cardinals alum has played significant time with the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks, having scored 20 points in a game, and has been pushing for this moment all season long. It was a dream of hers to play on this stage, and it shows that whatever you put your mind to is able to be achieved.
'It's honestly, like surreal. I've been thinking about this since I was really young, and I've been dreaming about getting to March Madness,' said Gardner. 'So, the fact that I'm actually going is really weird to process.'
Getting playing time as a freshman is not always a given, but she has scored 183 points this season, along with 35 assists and securing 134 rebounds. Making progress with teammates and coaches has helped her improve so far, as she continues to get better.
'We have right now, eight active players, so it almost became inevitable that I was going to touch the floor,' she said. 'All of my teammates and my coaches have been super supportive about it and they've helped me.'
The Ladyjacks are a 14 seed and will face off with #3 Notre Dame at 2:00 on Friday.

Analyst Tags Eagles as Ideal Landing Spot for Proven FA
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. As long as the Philadelphia Eagles remain on a contending timeline, they'll frequently find themselves in a position where they are tabbed as potential landing spots for some of the NFL's top free agents and trade candidates. The 31-year-old veteran safety Justin Simmons has been another player who has frequently found himself linked to the Eagles as the 2025 offseason plays out. While the rumors about Simmons potentially joining the Eagles have simmered down lately, CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin brought the smoker back out. As the NFL analyst marked down five potential landing spots for Simmons right now, Benjamin name-dropped the Eagles. "This is the fit that makes all the sense in the world, hence Simmons publicly and repeatedly identifying the Eagles as a preferred destination," Benjamin explained. "Philly could use proven insurance at safety after dealing ball hawk C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans, and Simmons played some of his finest football under Vic Fangio, who led the Eagles' defense to a dominant Super Bowl title in 2024. It's difficult to imagine a more ideal short-term marriage." Justin Simmons #31 of the Atlanta Falcons lines up before the snap during an NFL football game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on December 16, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Justin Simmons #31 of the Atlanta Falcons lines up before the snap during an NFL football game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on December 16, 2024 in Las Vegas, Eagles' decision to move on from CJ Gardner-Johnson at the start of the offseason was a bit of a head-scratcher at the time. With two separate stints in Philadelphia, Gardner-Johnson's impact was clear and important. While many suggested he lost a step at the beginning of his second run with the Eagles, it didn't take long before Gardner-Johnson silenced his critics. Philly's front office moved off of Gardner-Johnson due to salary cap reasons, according to the defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio. Gardner-Johnson denies that claim and has since been very vocal about his displeasure with the Eagles this offseason. Maybe the Eagles' decision to part ways with Gardner-Johnson goes deeper than the financial aspect and having confidence in the current group without him. Maybe that's a signal that there's a need for a short-term addition, and Simmons just might be the guy. Since entering the NFL as a third-round pick for the Denver Broncos in 2016, Simmons has played nine seasons, seeing the field for 134 games. Most of his career was with the Denver Broncos. Simmons signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons for the 2024 NFL season. Last year, Simmons totaled 62 tackles in 16 games. He snatched two interceptions while deflecting seven passes. Simmons certainly didn't play his best ball in Atlanta, but maybe a spark is in store in a competitive situation in Philadelphia under Nick Sirianni and Vic Fangio.

Iowa Baseball picks up portal commitment from talented outfielder
Iowa Baseball picks up portal commitment from talented outfielder As Iowa baseball retools its roster this offseason following a relatively promising 33-22-1 campaign this spring that eventually fell short of making the NCAA Tournament, the Hawkeyes got a commitment from former Wagner College outfielder Bryce Phelps in the transfer portal. The Denver, Iowa, native began his collegiate career at Southeastern Community College and spent each of the last two seasons with Wagner. As a junior for the Seahawks, Bryce appeared in 33 games, where he batted .195 over 177 at-bats, including 15 hits and eight RBIs. This past season, Phelps had a breakout campaign by starting 51 games and slashing a batting average of .399, an on-base percentage of .482, and a slugging percentage of .423, with 75 hits, 14 doubles, one home run, and 33 RBIs. Phelps' strikeout rate finished at just 11.7% in his 222 plate appearances and reached base via walk or hit by pitch in 14.0% of those appearances. With his impressive 2025 season at Wagner, Philips earned himself a spot on the First Team All-Northeast Conference list. '(It was) a combination of location, coaches, and teammates,' said Phelps in an interview with HawkeyeReport. 'Knowing that Iowa can be a place where I can go and compete with a bunch of guys that want to win, like my former Southeastern CC teammates Kooper Schulte and Caleb Wulf.' 'Just wanted to find the right fit at the highest level I could play at. The visit at Iowa was just as I remembered, felt like home. Having worked security at football games when I was at Southeastern Community College, I had a good feel for the outside of campus. Coach Heller and I had a great conversation. Talking about life, the program, and how I can fit in within the program as well. Talking to the coaches gave me the reassurance that I was wanted in the program. Having been recruited by them in high school and not working out I'm glad it circled back around.' As for where Philips could land in the Hawkeyes' lineup, he will have a chance to earn one of the corner outfield spots with centerfielder Miles Risley returning and Kellen Strohmeyer in line to earn the other corner position. Philips is just the third pickup for the Hawkeyes in the current transfer portal period, with Iowa likely to utilize the transfer pool as a valuable resource over the next few months while they patch up holes from their own departures. Gators land priority OF Jaden Bastian from transfer portal
Gators land priority OF Jaden Bastian from transfer portal Jacksonville center fielder Jaden Bastian has committed to the University of Florida baseball program, according to Baseball America's Jacob Rudner. Bastian is a five-tool talent that could start right away at Florida. He batted .302/.433/.552 and crushed fastballs as one of the ASUN's most dangerous hitters in 2025. Bastian hit 11 home runs and stole 36 bases, checking off the baserunning, power and speed boxes. He's held down center field at an elite level, too. He'll have to compete with Blake Cyr, Kyle Jones and Hayden Yost for a starting spot, but Bastian should contribute plenty. With Bastian and Jones now expected to make up two-thirds of the outfield, Florida has a chance to have one of the best groups in the country. It also gives the team some depth after injuries took out a chunk of the roster early on, including Jones. Florida Baseball 2025 Transfer Portal Movement Seven players have left Florida for the transfer portal this offseason. Left-handed sophomore Jacob Gomberg was the first to depart, followed by right-handers Alex Philpott (So.) and Carson Montsdeoca (Fr.). JUCO catcher Cole Bullen (Jr.) and right-handed freshmen Niko Janssens and Felix Ong made up the next wave of transfers. The most recent loss is freshman catcher Brock Clayton. Florida's early exit from the NCAA Tournament allowed Kevin O'Sullivan to make recruiting calls ahead of schedule, and the Gators have brought in four names. Notre Dame senior Ricky Reeth and UCF sophomore Russell Sandefer are the new right-handed arms, and JUCO catcher AJ Malzone rounds out the group headlined by Bastian.
