Chembur resident crashes rented BMW into dumper, dies

Hindustan Times17-05-2025
MUMBAI: A 28-year-old man driving a rented BMW died in the early hours on Friday after his car crashed into a dumper on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known the Atal Setu. The deceased was driving at a speed of around 160 kilometre per hour (kmph) and the impact of the collision burst the dumper's tyre and sent it crashing into the guardrail, said police. The BMW was crushed beyond recognition and its driver, 28-year-old Punit Singh Devendra Singh Machra, died on the spot due to serious head injuries, the police added.
According to the Sewri police, Machra was the son of a real estate broker. He lived in Gurukrupa Terrace near Basant Park in Chembur and assisted his father in the business, along with his younger brother. On Thursday, he left home at around 9pm for a party in south Mumbai, in a BMW he had rented from a car rental platform.
When he left the party around 2am on Friday, he took the Atal Setu and proceeded towards Navi Mumbai instead of heading to his residence in Chembur, said Rohit Khot, senior police inspector, Sewri police station.
'Perhaps, he had wanted to go on a joy ride up to Ulwe and return to Chembur,' said Khot.
Machra had travelled around 8.1km on the northbound lane of Atal Setu and was driving at around 160 kmph when he crashed into the dumper headed towards Panvel.
'The impact of the tail-end crash was so severe that a tyre of the dumper burst and the heavy vehicle crashed into the guardrail,' said Khot. 'Fortunately, it didn't fall into the sea and its driver, Ankit Vishwaskarma, escaped with minor injuries.'
Machra was likely drunk when the accident occurred, said Khot. He was rushed to MGM Hospital in Vashi in an ambulance after the police was informed about the accident, said Deepali Dhate, deputy commissioner of police (port zone).
'At the hospital, he was declared dead on arrival,' said Dhate. 'We collected his blood sample and have sent it for analysis to check if he was drunk.'
Machra was later booked under sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 125 (a) (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and section 184 (driving dangerously) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Kerala chit fund couple get anticipatory bail in Rs 40-crore cheating case in Bengaluru

A couple from Kerala who are accused of cheating nearly 600 investors of over Rs 40 crore through a chit fund and finance business they operated in east Bengaluru were granted anticipatory bail on Thursday by the principal sessions court in the Karnataka capital. Tomy A Varghese, 57, and his wife Shini Tomy, 52, are alleged to have fled to Kenya after cheating investors through the A&A Chit Funds and Finance firm they had been operating in east Bengaluru since 2005. The couple moved the Karnataka High Court seeking the quashing of the case on July 15 and approached the sessions court for bail on July 18. The court of the principal sessions judge in Bengaluru granted bail to the couple after hearing their counsel and the state prosecutor. A detailed order is expected to be released soon. The couple's plea in the high court, which also sought a stay on the investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police in the case, is due for hearing next week. The couple are alleged to have fled to Kenya on July 3, two days before the cheating case was registered against them at the Ramamurthy Nagar police station in east Bengaluru. Investigations have shown they sold all their property – an apartment and a car – for half the price before fleeing the country, the police said after the case was registered. A complaint of cheating was filed against the couple by a senior citizen who lost Rs 70 lakh in the alleged chit scam and several others also filed similar petitions. Dozens of investors have approached the Ramamurthy Nagar police with complaints of being defrauded by A&A Chit Funds and Finance. The police registered the FIR on July 5 on the basis of the complaint filed by P T Savio, 64, a Ramamurthy Nagar resident who has alleged that he has been cheated out of Rs 70 lakh by the couple. Hundreds lured with promise of 6-14% interest rates Initial police investigations found that 368 investors in A&A Chit Funds and Finance had been cheated out of Rs 39.66 crore. 'The accused have been running A&A Chit Fund and Finance company for about 20 years, by promising interest rates ranging from 6 to 14 per cent,' the police said. According to Savio's police complaint, the Tomy couple had gathered hundreds of small and large investors in the firm with the promise of high returns. The funds deposited by the investors were being collected in the bank accounts of the firm and the private accounts of the couple, says the police complaint. 'They have collected Rs 70 lakh from me and my family and several crores from others. When we visited the office of the company, we found it closed and the couple were missing. Their phones were also switched off,' read the complaint. The case was registered under section 4 of the Chit Funds Act 1982, section 21 of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Ordinance 2019; and sections 318 and 316 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating and criminal breach of trust. The Government later transferred the case to the CID. The police have issued lookout circulars for the couple after learning that they had left the country.

Data furnished in LS indicates low adherence to high security registration plates

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated in its reply to a question in the Lok Sabha that about 50% of registered vehicles across India are yet to be installed with High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) even as Telangana's compliance status remains unavailable as the State is in the process of migrating to Vahan 4 database. Parliamentarians Asaduddin Owaisi and Dhanorkar Pratibha Suresh, the MoRTH stated that 20.16 crore of the 40.07 crore registered vehicles in the country have HSRPs. The remaining 19.91 crore, or 49.69%, are non-compliant with the HSRP norms, which were made mandatory to curb counterfeiting and enhance traceability. The ministry also stated that while the Central government is responsible for framing rules under the Motor Vehicles Act, the implementation of HSRP norms, which include fixing, deciding the price, as well as its distribution, is the prerogative of State and Union Territory governments. Telangana is the only State for which HSRP compliance data was not available and submitted in the reply on account of the migration to Vahan 4 platform. The ministry also acknowledged reports of counterfeit HSRPs being circulated in parts of the country. It cited specific provisions under Rule 50(1) of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, which require plates to have tamper-proof features such as chromium-based holograms, laser-branded serial numbers, and snap-lock fittings. Advisories have been issued to the State transport agencies or departments as well as manufacturers to prevent unauthorised production and distribution. On the issue of rural access and price disparities, the government clarified that it does not regulate the cost of HSRPs. This came in response to a query about higher plate prices in Maharashtra, where HSRP fee are reportedly more than double when compared to those in other States. States with some of the the lowest compliance percentages include Lakshadweep, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Madhya Pradesh. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir, and Assam reported higher compliance. In Telangana, there is confusion about fixing HSRPs to older vehicles. While the traffic police have embarked on a drive to ensure said number plates are affixed to vehicles, the Transport department is yet to issue orders mandating HSRPs on older vehicles.

Dharmasthala mass burial row: Court grant anticipatory bail to YouTuber Sameer MD; faces charges over AI video

Youtuber Sameer MD (File photo) NEW DELHI: A local court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to YouTuber Sameer MD, who is facing criminal charges over content linked to the Dharmasthala mass burial case. Dharmasthala police had registered a case after Sameer allegedly caused public outrage by uploading an AI-generated video that contained fabricated details about the case. Dakshina Kannada SP Arun K said the video, reportedly generated using artificial intelligence, included fabricated details beyond those provided by the complainant witness in the official complaint and court proceedings. Sameer was booked under Sections 192 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 240 (false information) and 353(1)(b) (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The charges come against the backdrop of the ongoing SIT probe into the Dharmasthala case. In July 2025, a former sanitation worker alleged that, between 1995 and 2014, he was forced to bury or burn hundreds of bodies, many showing signs of violence and sexual assault. His claims triggered a state-level investigation, which is still underway. This is not the first time the YouTuber has landed in legal trouble. Earlier this year, a Bengaluru court issued notice in a Rs 10 crore defamation suit filed by Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala representatives D Harshendra Kumar and Nischal D, accusing him of deliberately targeting the institution over the unsolved 2008 college student murder case. Sameer, who commands a sizeable online following, has often argued that his work highlights issues neglected by mainstream media. Authorities, however, contend that his recent content amounted to provocation and misinformation, with the potential to disturb public order. While granting bail, the court directed him to cooperate with the investigation and refrain from making any inflammatory statements. Police sources added that monitoring of online content related to sensitive cases would continue to prevent the spread of misinformation and unrest.
