Australia bat first in second T20 against New Zealand

Yahoo23-03-2025
Australia have chosen to bat first after winning the toss as they attempt to wrap up the Twenty20 series against New Zealand.
After crushing the White Ferns in Auckland on Friday, Australia have made just one forced change for the second match in Tauranga.
Star allrounder Ashleigh Gardner suffered a fractured finger while fielding in game one, forcing her to return to Sydney for further scans and seek specialist advice.
Replacing her is star Alana King, who will again partner Georgia Wareham as a fellow legspinner.
Opener Beth Mooney will loom large for Australia after she celebrated her 200th international by smashing an unbeaten 75 from just 42 balls in game one.
New Zealand have gone in with an unchanged XI.
Australia: Beth Mooney (wk), Georgia Voll, Phoebe Litchfield, Ellyse Perry, Annabel Sutherland, Tahlia McGrath (capt), Grace Harris, Georgia Wareham, Alana King, Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown.
New Zealand: Suzie Bates (capt), Georgia Plimmer, Amelia Kerr, Sophie Devine, Brooke Halliday, Maddy Green, Jess Kerr, Polly Inglis (wk), Lea Tahuhu, Rosemary Mair, Eden Carson

'Going to tear it apart': More to come from young Pie

An eye-catching debut in long sleeves, with a cult following cheering her every move, was just the beginning for Ash Centra. That's the belief of Collingwood coach Sam Wright after the Magpies' No.1 draft pick played her hotly-anticipated first AFLW game in the season opener. Centra, on limited minutes after a pre-season hip complaint, started on the bench, but was cheered when she ran onto the field - and the applause seemingly never stopped. The 19-year-old only had three disposals but clunked a huge contested mark and snagged a goal with her first kick in Thursday night's 6.9 (45) to 3.3 (21) loss to Carlton at Princes Park. WHAT A MOMENT 🌟Number one pick Ash Centra joins the first kick, first goal club after taking a brilliant contested mark to go with it! — Collingwood AFLW (@CollingwoodAFLW) August 14, 2025 "She's got like a cult following," Wright said. "Every time she went near the ball, whether she got it or not, you could hear the crowd get up and about. "I just think it's so great for our game. "I mean, the long sleeves, you know, you could see her coming from a mile away, because you could hear the crowd building. "So I was really happy for her that she she kicked that goal, but she's going to be a serious player." Centra, who was a star junior, played just 61 per cent game time, predominantly up forward. Wright, who admitted he'd have loved to have been able to throw Centra into the midfield, expected her to need at least a couple more weeks before she could play full minutes. He stressed the No.1 pick, who was among five debutants, was treated like any other player and wouldn't have felt any pressure at Collingwood. "I reckon she might have enjoyed it tonight when the crowd was up and about, because she probably doesn't get that behind closed doors," he said. "But we're just going to continue to see her build. "There's no doubt when she's unleashed on full minutes and she starts going into the midfield, she's going to tear it apart." The Magpies hope to regain Irish star Sarah Rowe from a shoulder injury while Kellyann Hogan (shoulder) will require scans after she was injured against the Blues. Collingwood host GWS at Victoria Park next Saturday. The surface had been patchy recently but Wright is confident the Magpies' home ground will be up to standard. "No, I'm comfortable," he said. "I'm comfortable with the procedures that the AFL go through, too. "So if it's not right to play on, then they'll let us know, but no indication of that."

Dockers aim to live like Fyfe ahead of moment of truth

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir is encouraging his team to adopt Nat Fyfe's "live in the moment'' mantra when the club's top-four hopes go on the line against Brisbane. Fyfe announced on Monday he will be retiring at the end of the season, adding a sense of urgency to Fremantle's quest for an elusive AFL flag. The Dockers are currently fourth with a 15-6 record heading into Friday night's home clash. But such is the closeness of the top nine teams, Fremantle could miss the finals altogether if they lose to both Brisbane (14-6-1) and the Western Bulldogs (13-8) in the final two rounds. Sending Fyfe off into the sunset with a premiership would be the fairytale ending to the season for Fremantle. But Longmuir doesn't want his players to get distracted. "Some of that talk is the talk that probably takes you away from what you need to do," Longmuir said. "I thought Fyfey summarised it really well the other day in his speech - you just need to live in the moment and win every day. 'That's what he's boiled his career down to - getting the most out of every day. If we live that mantra, we'll be right." Fyfe is likely to play as the sub again in what is just his second game back from a calf injury. The 33-year-old has been beset by injuries in the latter part of his career, and Longmuir praised his resilience. "He's had a great career," Longmuir said. sit back and enjoy the very best of Nat Fyfe in the air 🍿#foreverfyfe — Fremantle Dockers (@freodockers) August 13, 2025 "Even tracking him this year, the resilience he's shown to get back and get into this position to be in the team - it's motivating for all of us. "We want to send him out in the right way, but we need to focus on what we need to do." Brisbane are aiming to bounce back from last week's two-point loss to Sydney. Premiership defenders Ryan Lester and Brandon Starcevich return from injury, but star midfielder Lachie Neale (quad) is still missing. Emerging Lions star Levi Ashcroft, who will get extended midfield minutes while Neale is out, said the key for Brisbane is sticking together and staying connected. "We didn't play poorly last week, just had a few bad moments or a bad quarter," Ashcroft said. "(The message is) just stay connected, play together and continue to play our way, because we know our best can be the best and beat any team in this competition."
