The Citizen17-07-2025
The inaugural Schoolboy Mathunyane Sports Tournament finals took place on Sunday at the Themba Senamela Stadium, with both netball and soccer taking centre stage.
The tournament consisted of 12 schools, in four groups of four teams each, and ran for over a month.
Mkhulu Combined School triumphed over Kwazamokuhle High School during thrilling penalties in the first semi-final match.
In an exciting and electrifying finals, LD Moetanalo emerged as champions against Mkhulu Combined in penalties, with a score of 5-7.
They were rewarded with a floating trophy, gold medals and a voucher for R5 000, as well as a new playing kit for their victory.
Mkhulu received a runners-up trophy, silver medals and a voucher for R3 000, as well as a new kit.
The third position went to Kwazamokuhle, who defeated Phumelela by a solitary goal in the losers' final. For their efforts, they were rewarded with bronze medals and R1 500.
LD Moetanalo pocketed the Top Goal Scorer and Best Goalkeeper awards, while the Player of the Tournament went to Mkhulu.
• Eastdene Combined School faced off against Sozama Secondary School in the netball finals. Eastdene emerged as winners in the exciting final and were crowned the inaugural netball champions of the tournament.
For their efforts, they were rewarded with a netball kit, gold medals, a floating trophy and a whopping R5 000, while Sozama received a kit, silver medals, R3 000 and a floating runners-up trophy.
Phumelela, who were third, were awarded bronze medals and R1 500.
Sozama scooped the Player of the Tournament award, while Eastdene and Phumelela shared the Best Defender award.
The tournament was described as a great success and good motivation for school children, which aligns perfectly with what the late Paul Mathunyane lived and strived for, to see young people getting an opportunity to excel on the sports field.
Congratulations to the Mathunyane family, led by Thato Mathunyane, and the Local Football Association, led by Giji Motha, for organising such a great, professionally run tournament.
'The Steve Tshwete community, especially schools, must definitely embrace such initiatives from philanthropists of this calibre, who play a vital role that helps take our young ones off the streets, where they fall into many forms of mischievous activities, that include substance abuse and teenage pregnancy,' said Thato.
The founders of the tournament stated that they are confident the initiative will grow even bigger going forward, judging from the success of the competition this year.

Junior Springbok star Haashim Pead named in Lions Currie Cup squad

Junior Springbok world champion Haashim Pead will make his senior debut for the Lions when he runs out for the Johannesburg-based side in this season's Currie Cup. Pead was named the Player of the Tournament following the Junior Boks' victory over New Zealand in the U20 World Championship final last Saturday. The young talent boasted incredible numbers, even surpassing France megastar Antoine Dupont's record for running metres by a scrumhalf at the tournament, racking up 232 metres from 15 carries during the pool stages. Pead also scored six tries and assisted four. He was one of three Junior Springboks – the others being Cheswill Jooste and Batho Hlekani – invited to train with the Springboks at an upcoming training camp. On Wednesday, Pead was also named in the Lions' Currie Cup squad, alongside Junior Bok team-mates Gilermo Mentoe, Thando Biyela and Morne Venter. Experienced hooker Jaco Visage will lead the Mziwakhe Nkosi-coached side once again. The duo led the Lions to the final in 2024, where they lost thanks a 60m Jordan Hendrikse penalty in the final play of the match. Perhaps fittingly, the Lions get their Currie Cup campaign underway against the Sharks in Johannesburg on Friday. ‘Football Brain' written all over Katleho Maphisa's head

BOPHELONG.- 'Football Brain' is written all over his head! This is the best way to describe the young sensational midfielder maestro, Katleho Maphisa (12). This Celta Vigo Development FC youngster's future looks bright if his performance is anything to go by. Maphisa was outstanding, leading by example as the team's captain when Celta Vigo FC U13 was crowned the Relebohile Mofokeng Foundation Tournament champions at James ground, in Sharpeville, on Sunday. This young boy from Bophelong was named Player of the Tournament in the U13 category for his outstanding performance throughout the tournament. He was 'head and shoulders' above the rest, controlling the midfield like a seasoned midfielder, being all over the field, here, there, and everywhere, dictating terms for his teammates in the middle of the park. This performance separated him from the rest of his teammates and opponents. Those who were tasked to choose the player of the tournament didn't think twice to pick him for this award. He was too good to be ignored! 'The boy was exceptional since the tournament started. He was very consistent, performed in every game he played, and he deserved this award. Other players were also exceptional, but Katleho Maphisa was out of this world. The boy is very unique, and he is going far if he keeps on working hard,' said one of the tournament officials. His coach, Themba Dlamini rated Maphisa highly, saying the boy is a hard worker and he loves football.
