Man City fined £1mil after delayed Premier League kick-offs

LONDON: Manchester City have been fined more than £1 million by the Premier League over delayed kick-offs in nine matches last season.
Premier League officials announced on Thursday that Pep Guardiola's side had breached rules around kick-off and restart times between October and February.
The longest delay was two minutes and 24 seconds before the resumption of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford in December.
The Premier League said City had accepted the breaches and apologised for the incidents.
The fines total £1.08 million (US$1.45 million).
"Rules relating to kick-offs and restarts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs," a Premier League statement said.
"It also ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule."
It is not the first time City have been in trouble for their tardy kick-offs.
The club were fined more than £2 million last year for 22 breaches of the kick-off and restart rules.
Guardiola's men finished third in the Premier League last season as their four-year reign as champions came to an end.
City, who also suffered a shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace, are currently playing in the Club World Cup in the United States.

Messi's 'winning spirit' surprising: Inter Miami's Mascherano

ATLANTA: Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano admitted he is surprised at Lionel Messi's desire to win after the MLS side shocked Porto at the Club World Cup on Thursday. Veteran playmaker Messi curled home a fine free-kick in a man-of-the-match performance at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the winning goal in Miami's 2-1 Group A victory over their Portuguese opponents. Mascherano said his Argentine compatriot's competitive spirit at 37 was more surprising to him than the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner's quality. "Beyond his goal... he's a player who shows us how to compete, his hunger, his desire to continue competing at whatever level it is," Mascherano told reporters. "In a footballing sense, what else is there to say? He's the best player that has played this sport in its history, but what is surprising is his will to win. "Today, even in the last minutes, tired, with a knock, he kept helping the team in any way he could, in attack, in defence, to get the result... "We know having him gives us an advantage, but above all, through his contagious spirit, the winning spirit that he has." Many expected Porto to beat Inter Miami but the American side recorded a first ever victory in a competitive match for an MLS team against European opposition and the first shock at the Club World Cup. "I think that we understood that in football there are obviously hierarchies, and we were facing against a team at a high level, with international players," said Mascherano. "But we were convinced that if we did what we had to do, if we had a plan, if we supported each other, if we were together, but above all, if we dared to play, we could compete." Samu Aghehowa netted a first-half penalty for Porto but Telasco Segovia and Messi's strikes after the break earned Inter Miami victory which puts them level on four points with Palmeiras at the top of the group. "What I told them (at half-time) was... to raise their spirits, because we had clearly showed we could compete, and that we had reached a moment where I didn't care about the result," added Mascherano.

Maresca plans player rotation as Chelsea battle heat and fatigue at Club World Cup

PHILADELPHIA: The gruelling North American summer heat and the toll of a long season have forced Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to adjust his team as they prepare for Friday's top-of-the-table clash against Brazilian giants Flamengo at the Club World Cup. With the game expected to decide who will finish top of Group D ahead of the knockout rounds, Maresca said that he has reduced the intensity and duration of training sessions to ensure his players remain competitive. "It's not easy because of the temperature," Maresca told a press conference on Thursday. "We're going to try to rotate players. Unfortunately for us, the Brazilian team are more used to playing in this kind of temperature. But it doesn't matter. We're going to try to do our best and win the game. "We need to rotate three, four, or five players each game. It's impossible for players to be at 100% for 11 months straight. So we are trying to train less and prioritise tactical aspects rather than physical intensity in our daily sessions." Chelsea resumed training for the tournament shortly after winning the Europa Conference League title on May 28 following the conclusion of their Premier League campaign and Maresca is focused on winning more silverware. "This feels like pre-season because we had some days off after the Premier League and then started again," he explained. "But it's not pre-season; it's a big competition. We're here to win games and go as far as possible." The Italian manager expressed his support for forward Mykhailo Mudryk, who was charged with an anti-doping rule violation by England's FA on Wednesday. "Misha is a Chelsea player and I trust all Chelsea players," he said. "I haven't spoken to him recently but the last time I did, he seemed fine. Until I have more information, there's not much I can add." Chelsea and Flamengo are tied on three points at the top of Group D following 2-0 wins against LAFC and Esperance de Tunis respectively. --REUTERS

Chelsea boss Maresca 'trusts' Mudryk after doping charge

PHILADELPHIA: Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said Thursday he still maintained trust in Mykhailo Mudryk after the Ukrainian winger was charged by England's Football Association with violating anti-doping rules, but confirmed the club were looking to strengthen in his position. "'Mischa' is a Chelsea player. As long as he is a Chelsea player, I will trust all the Chelsea players," Maresca told reporters in Philadelphia ahead of his team's Club World Cup meeting with Flamengo on Friday. Mudryk has not played for Chelsea since November 28 following his provisional suspension by the FA for an "adverse finding in a routine urine test" in December. He could face a potential ban of up to four years under FA rules. Mudryk is not with the Chelsea squad for the tournament in the United States and Maresca said he has had no contact with the player since the UEFA Conference League final win over Real Betis in Poland late last month. "The last time I spoke with 'Mischa' was in Poland and he was quite good. "Since that day I have not spoken with him so I don't know how he is now but for sure in the next days, in the next weeks, we are going to have contact with him." Mudryk was signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for 100 million euros (US$115m) but his time at Chelsea has been dogged by inconsistency, with erratic performances only occasionally off-set by flashes of his ability. He has scored just 10 goals in 73 appearances in all competitions for the Blues. Maresca revealed that he is hoping to sign a new wide attacker before the start of the Premier League season. "We had already one entire season almost without 'Mischa', last season, and we tried to find different solutions with some of the academy players, like Tyrique (George), but we are going to decide to go for a winger, and not because of 'Mischa'," Maresca said. "It is quite clear that it is a position that we need to improve." Chelsea can expect to face challenging conditions on Friday against Flamengo, with heat and humidity rising in Philadelphia in recent days and the match kicking off at 2:00 pm local time. The game is likely to be key in deciding who tops Group D with both teams fresh from winning 2-0 in their opening match at the tournament – Chelsea got the better of Los Angeles FC in Atlanta while Flamengo defeated Esperance. Maresca said the conditions could favour the Brazilian giants and added that he would make several changes to his line-up – the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Malo Gusto and new signing Liam Delap are among those pushing for starts. "It is not easy because of the temperature. This is the reason why we are going to try to rotate players," the coach added. "Unfortunately for us Brazilian teams are more used to playing with this kind of temperature, but it doesn't matter, we will try to do our best and win the game." Flamengo, coached by former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea player Filipe Luis, are top of the Brazilian league and have lost only one of their last 16 outings in all competitions. "They are a very good team, they play nice football, it is nice to watch them," Maresca said. "They have many good players. Watching them, you realise they are a very good team, very good organisation. "Like any Brazilian team they are full of quality, technical players, and we will need to be at our best to win the game."--AFP
