Detroit Tigers catcher Jake Rogers puts team first after shifting to backup role

Yahoo2 days ago

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jake Rogers used to be the Detroit Tigers' No. 1 catcher.
Now, he's their No. 2.
The Tigers recently flipped their catching depth chart, elevating Dillon Dingler into the starting role. As Dingler emerged as one of MLB's best catchers, both offensively and defensively, Rogers shifted into the backup role.

"We got another great catcher," Rogers said Wednesday, May 28. "It's tough. I'm used to playing a lot, but that's just not my role anymore. I know my role. I'm going to be here for him with whatever he needs, and whenever they want me to play, I'm going to be ready."
Rogers isn't bitter. He's bought in.

Detroit Tigers catcher Jake Rogers (34) looks on during an at bat in the first inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park in Detroit on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
"As long as we're winning, I love it," Rogers said.
The numbers don't lie.
Dingler, 26, is hitting .289 with four home runs, two walks and 42 strikeouts in 41 games. He's also been worth plus-6 defensive runs saved in 342⅓ innings behind the plate. His offense ranks sixth among 20 catchers with at least 150 plate appearances, while his defense ranks fourth among 19 catchers with at least 300 innings. Only Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narváez ranks higher than Dingler in both categories.

"We're a year removed from him being the guy getting the opportunity," manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday of Rogers getting replaced as the No. 1 catcher. "Last year, Jake caught so much because we trusted him so much. Just because Dillon has done well doesn't mean we trust Jake less or we expect less of him. It's really important that we keep it all in perspective."
Rogers, 30, remains an above-average defensive catcher, but his offense continues to lag behind. If Dingler weren't hitting, Rogers would probably still be the Tigers' No. 1 catcher.

But Dingler is hitting.

And Rogers is not.
"I want to play every day," Rogers said, "but when you got a player playing that well, it's tough to play every day."
Despite the demotion, Rogers has the respect of his teammates — and then some.
He hasn't lost the clubhouse.
"Jake is awesome," said right-handed reliever Tommy Kahnle, who owns a 1.50 ERA in six innings with Rogers catching. "He's been an incredible teammate. I've seen it since Day 1 of spring training. He came up to me and gave me a big hug. I was like, 'Oh, this is awesome.' He's a great catcher. He does everything for us. He will go out there, lay on the ground and pretty much die for you. I love that. That's pretty much everybody in here."

For now, the plan is simple: Rogers will start once per three-game series, and Dingler will catch the other two games. In the Royals series, Dingler is scheduled to start Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, with Rogers getting the nod Sunday, June 1.
Left-hander Tarik Skubal is starting Saturday's game.
It's another Skubal-Dingler pairing.
With Dingler catching this season, Skubal has a 1.55 ERA with two walks and 74 strikeouts across 52⅓ innings in eight starts — including his most recent outing, even though Rogers was healthy. With Rogers catching, Skubal has a 5.51 ERA, five walks and 18 strikeouts across 16⅓ innings in three starts.

Although Rogers isn't the No. 1 anymore, he still has a role on the Tigers — a team with MLB's best record, at 37-20, entering Friday. He is a veteran leader behind the scenes, a unifying presence in the clubhouse and a steady backup catcher.
The Tigers need Rogers, even if they're not relying on him on the field as often.
"We've got a group of guys in the clubhouse that are all in, and when you are that way, any given day, you can be the guy," Hinch said. "When he gets his opportunities, he's the same guy. When he doesn't get opportunities, he's the same guy. That consistency is indicative of a really healthy clubhouse that cares about winning and cares about where we're at."

Recap: LSU baseball falls as Little Rock forces a winner-take-all game on Monday

Recap: LSU baseball falls as Little Rock forces a winner-take-all game on Monday LSU entered Sunday night's game against the Little Rock Trojans with one goal in mind: a trip to the Super Regionals. All they had to do was beat a team that they defeated 7-0 in the first game of the regional on Friday. The Trojans put up six runs in the first three innings, and LSU could not rally, and the Tigers lost 10-4. LSU was the visiting team in this game (that is a rant for another day). In the top of the first inning, LSU got out to a 3-0 lead as Danny Dickinson hit an RBI single and Steven Milam hit a two-RBI single. Jaden Noot got the start on the mound for the Tigers. In the first two games of the Regional, LSU did not give up any runs. That all changed at the bottom of the second inning when Little Rock hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 3-2. In the top of the third inning, LSU loaded the bases for Michael Braswell, but he flew out to Center Field to end the inning. Chase Shores entered the game to pitch in the bottom of the third inning. After recording a groundout, he walked the bases loaded, and then a double cleared the bases and gave Little Rock a 6-3 lead. Cooper Williams would then enter to pitch. In the top of the fourth inning, LSU once again loaded the bases. This time, Ethan Frey was the one up to bat. Frey popped out to the shortstop to end the inning, and the Tigers left the runners stranded for the second inning in a row. In the top of the fifth inning, LSU cut into the lead as a wild pitch scored Luis Hernandez to make it 6-4 Little Rock. Both teams were retired three up, three down in the sixth and seventh innings. Jacob Mayers entered to pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning. He retired all three batters he faced, and we headed to the top of the eighth inning with LSU still trailing by two runs. Once again, LSU was retired without getting anyone on base, and the Tigers were down to their final three outs. Mayers trotted back out onto the mound in the eighth inning and walked the first three batters to load the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly got the first out, but it increased the Trojans' lead to 7-4. Mayers walked another hitter, and the bases were loaded once again. Mavrick Rizy was then brought in to pitch. An RBI groundout scored another run to make it 8-4. A wild pitch scored another run to make it 9-4. An RBI single would increase the lead to 10-4. Tonight's loss marked the first time in LSU history that the Tigers lost to a No. 4 seed in a Baton Rouge Regional. It sets up a winner-take-all game against Little Rock tomorrow. I do not know who the Trojans will have pitching, but I have a really good idea of who we will see from LSU. We are going to see some combination of Casan Evans and Zac Cowan. We have not seen either of those guys in this regional, and now is the time for those guys to slam the door on Little Rock and send us to a Super Regional against West Virginia. Tomorrow's game will be played at a time to be announced.

Detroit Tigers Make Announcement on Closer Will Vest After Royals Series

Detroit Tigers Make Announcement on Closer Will Vest After Royals Series originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Tigers continued their winning ways on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over the rival Kansas City Royals, their second win in three games against manager Matt Quatraro's team. Advertisement The Tigers got two hits from Riley Greene and a masterful pitching performance yet again from last year's AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal en route to the win. Now 39-21 with the best record in the American League, Detroit's ascent to the top of the Majors has been a wonder to behold. Following the series, Detroit made an announcement on a former Rule 5 draft pick who has become the Tigers' de facto closer, helping to shore up a bullpen tasked with shutting the door on opposing teams. "Will Vest is your Tigers @PrimitivPerform Reliever of the Month for May," they added. The 29-year-old native of Houston added a 1.14 WHIP and 15 strikeouts with just four walks during the month as the Tigers finished with the best record in Major League Baseball for the season heading into June. Vest was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the 12th pick in the 2020 Rule 5 draft out of the Tigers' organization on Dec. 10, 2020. He was later returned to the Tigers after he was designated by the Mariners for assignment and has become a key part of the Tigers' pitching staff at age 29. 'Such a shame': NRL world saddened over news about Tim Sheens and Robbie Farah

NRL fans are expressing their sadness and disappointment after Tim Sheens and Robbie Farah were noticeable absentees at a 20-year reunion for the club's 2005 premiership triumph. The 2005 squad gathered in the chairman's lounge at Leichhardt Oval to mark 20 years since their 30-16 win over North Queensland in the grand final that year. Current Tigers coach Benji Marshall was in attendance, as was Cowboys coach Todd Payten (who played for the Tigers in 2005). The only players missing from the function were Farah (who was overseas) and Scott Prince (due to family commitments). A number of the team's coaching staff also attended, but 2005 coach Sheens stayed away. The 74-year-old had a bitter falling out with the club in 2023 when he was sacked and replaced by Marshall. Sheens was brought back to mentor Marshall at the start of 2023, and was supposed to hand over the reigns after two years as head coach. But the club bit the bullet early and sacked Sheens out of the blue so Marshall could take over 12 months early. Sheens boycotted the club's end of season awards night at the end of that year, and has seemingly severed all ties. As for Farah, it remains to be seen whether he would have attended if he was in the country. The former hooker served as an assistant under Sheens in 2023 and Marshall in 2024, but was let go at the end of last season (their third wooden spoon in a row). Club officials have previously stressed that Farah and Marshall's relationship remains strong despite the decision to let him go. NRL columnist 'The Mole' wrote on social media: "Such a shame Tim Sheens boycotted the 20-year reunion of the Wests Tigers miracle of 2005. But he is a man of principal and the Tigers knifed him something shocking." Others described it as "awful" and "very sad" that Sheens' relationship with the Tigers still hasn't been repaired. He led the club in 278 of his 778 games as a first-grade head coach, but was left filthy with the way he departed. The Tigers initially stated it was a mutual decision, but Sheens' good friend Royce Simmons later revealed he was sacked against his wishes. 'Why would you go (to the awards night)?' Simmons said in 2023. 'If you weren't wanted at the club, how could you go to their presentation night? 'They sacked him. And I can only imagine how frustrated Tim is. It's sad to see. He wasn't given the opportunity to do what he wanted to do. You bring a coach back who has won a premiership, and is in the top bracket of coaches of all time, you look to his expertise, then you don't use it. It doesn't make any sense to me.' RELATED: Andrew Johns responds amid Nathan Cleary and Mary Fowler rumour Brisbane Broncos coach spotted in eye-opening move in dressing rooms Tigers legend Benny Elias previously said: "The way they treated him, it was disgusting. They signed him saying: 'Help us, help us', so he puts his heart and soul into the club and then they sack him again. 'It was the board's decision to punt him...I was genuinely embarrassed at the way it happened and how he was treated. This bloke is a legend. This is the coach who has won four grand finals at two clubs, coached NSW and Australia. When it comes to the elite in terms of coaching, he is up there in the top three coaches."
