Recap: LSU baseball falls as Little Rock forces a winner-take-all game on Monday
LSU entered Sunday night's game against the Little Rock Trojans with one goal in mind: a trip to the Super Regionals. All they had to do was beat a team that they defeated 7-0 in the first game of the regional on Friday. The Trojans put up six runs in the first three innings, and LSU could not rally, and the Tigers lost 10-4.
LSU was the visiting team in this game (that is a rant for another day). In the top of the first inning, LSU got out to a 3-0 lead as Danny Dickinson hit an RBI single and Steven Milam hit a two-RBI single.
Jaden Noot got the start on the mound for the Tigers. In the first two games of the Regional, LSU did not give up any runs. That all changed at the bottom of the second inning when Little Rock hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 3-2. In the top of the third inning, LSU loaded the bases for Michael Braswell, but he flew out to Center Field to end the inning. Chase Shores entered the game to pitch in the bottom of the third inning.
After recording a groundout, he walked the bases loaded, and then a double cleared the bases and gave Little Rock a 6-3 lead. Cooper Williams would then enter to pitch.
In the top of the fourth inning, LSU once again loaded the bases. This time, Ethan Frey was the one up to bat. Frey popped out to the shortstop to end the inning, and the Tigers left the runners stranded for the second inning in a row. In the top of the fifth inning, LSU cut into the lead as a wild pitch scored Luis Hernandez to make it 6-4 Little Rock.
Both teams were retired three up, three down in the sixth and seventh innings. Jacob Mayers entered to pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning. He retired all three batters he faced, and we headed to the top of the eighth inning with LSU still trailing by two runs.
Once again, LSU was retired without getting anyone on base, and the Tigers were down to their final three outs. Mayers trotted back out onto the mound in the eighth inning and walked the first three batters to load the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly got the first out, but it increased the Trojans' lead to 7-4. Mayers walked another hitter, and the bases were loaded once again.
Mavrick Rizy was then brought in to pitch. An RBI groundout scored another run to make it 8-4. A wild pitch scored another run to make it 9-4. An RBI single would increase the lead to 10-4.
Tonight's loss marked the first time in LSU history that the Tigers lost to a No. 4 seed in a Baton Rouge Regional. It sets up a winner-take-all game against Little Rock tomorrow. I do not know who the Trojans will have pitching, but I have a really good idea of who we will see from LSU.
We are going to see some combination of Casan Evans and Zac Cowan. We have not seen either of those guys in this regional, and now is the time for those guys to slam the door on Little Rock and send us to a Super Regional against West Virginia. Tomorrow's game will be played at a time to be announced.

Keith scores on sacrifice fly in 11th, Tigers rally to top Twins 4-3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Colt Keith scored on Gleyber Torres' sacrifice fly in the 11th inning and the Detroit Tigers overcame an early three-run deficit to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Thursday night. Riley Greene hit his team-leading 28th home run to help Detroit win for the fourth time in five games and fifth in seven. Starting at second base in the 11th inning, Keith advanced to third on a wild pitch by Erasmo Ramírez (0-1) and scored on a Torres' sacrifice fly. Rafael Montero (1-1) got the final four outs for the Tigers. Detroit starter Tarik Skubal overcame a shaky third inning to get through seven innings, allowing three runs. He had only three strikeouts. When he last faced the Twins on June 29, he struck out 13 in seven innings. Edouard Julien homered before Ryan Jeffers and Luke Keaschall had RBIs in a three-run Minnesota third, but Skubal retired 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced. After starter Bailey Ober got two quick outs in the fourth, Kerry Carpenter doubled and Greene's home run cut the Detroit deficit to 3-2. Key moment Minnesota's Alan Roden tried to score from third with one out in the 10th inning on a half-swing by Austin Martin, but was thrown out at the plate by charging first baseman Spencer Torkelson, a call upheld by video review. Key stat Detroit has won 11 of its past 17 games since July 27 after losing 12 of 13 and having its division lead shrink from 14 to seven games. Up next RHP Charlie Morton (7-10, 5.48 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday night for Detroit against Minnesota RHP Pierson Ohl (0-2, 7.15). ___ AP MLB:

Pitching shines as Troy Melton leads Detroit Tigers to 1-0 win over Chicago White Sox

CHICAGO — The Detroit Tigers needed two things on Wednesday, Aug. 13: efficiency from starting pitcher Troy Melton and run support from the strikeout-prone offense. Only one came, but it was enough for a win. The Tigers won, 1-0, in their series finale against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field, taking two of three games in the series — both by one run. The rookie Melton led the way with five scoreless innings on 56 pitches. The Tigers (70-52) have secured two series in a row for the first time since early July, an important recovery from dropping six of seven series in between. THE BEST TEAM? Tigers own MLB's best record in last 162 games. Rival stars react to their rise Melton, a 24-year-old right-hander, took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He wasn't going to pitch nine innings regardless, but Luis Robert Jr. broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff double off Melton's two-strike slider. The way Melton responded stood out – he struck out the next three batters: Andrew Benintendi (swinging, 85.4 mph slider), Miguel Vargas (swinging, 97.1 mph four-seam fastball), Edgar Quero (swinging, 85 mph slider). Those were three of Melton's six strikeouts. He didn't issue a walk. After the fifth inning, the Tigers turned the game over to right-handed reliever Sawyer Gipson-Long, who returned from a 47-day stint on the injured list (neck stiffness). He fired scoreless sixth and seventh innings, setting up a path to win. Finnegan, 33, continued his dominance since the Tigers acquired him from the Washington Nationals at the July 31 trade deadline. This time, he worked around a leadoff walk with three outs in a row, including two groundouts. Celebrate 125 seasons of the Tigers with our new book! Since the trade, Finnegan hasn't allowed a run in 5⅓ innings. Vest, 30, recorded the final three outs – Curtis Mead (groundout), Kyle Teel (strikeout) and Lenyn Sosa (flyout) – to lower his ERA this season to 2.61 in 49 games. He has 18 saves in 23 chances. THE ROTATION: Detroit Tigers' Chris Paddack explains obsession with throwing first-pitch strikes The only run The Tigers were shut down by right-hander Shane Smith, who completed five scoreless innings on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts in his 92-pitch performance. But the Tigers scored after Smith's departure. In the sixth inning, the Tigers loaded the bases against left-handed reliever Martín Pérez in his return from a lengthy stay on the injured list (elbow). To load the bases, Kerry Carpenter slapped a single, Spencer Torkelson ripped a double to center and Riley Greene drew a rare walk. The Tigers were limited to one run in their bases-loaded, no-out situation, scoring on Wenceel Pérez's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. After that, Javier Báez struck out and Jahmai Jones grounded into a force out — stranding runners on the corners. But that one run was enough to win. Detroit Tigers activate Sawyer Gipson-Long from injured list, send him to bullpen

CHICAGO — Sawyer Gipson-Long has joined the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers activated Gipson-Long from the injured list after he completed his rehab assignment, making him available out of the bullpen Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the series finale against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field. To open a roster spot, the Tigers optioned right-handed reliever Codi Heuer to Triple-A Toledo. "It's good to get him back," manager A.J. Hinch said of Gipson-Long's return for Wednesday's game. "We need his pitches. We may or may not use him, but I know he's built up to 60, 75 pitches, something like that." TUESDAY'S GAME: Tigers, Jack Flaherty fall apart in 5th inning of 9-6 loss to White Sox Gipson-Long hasn't pitched for the Tigers since June 26 because of neck stiffness that required two separate rehab assignments. In total, the 27-year-old made four rehab starts with Triple-A Toledo before returning to the Tigers. "The neck was spasms," Gipson-Long said. "It wasn't anything structurally wrong. As I was rehabbing, it didn't feel quite as good as I'd like, so we backed off a little bit, figured some things out and then went back to it." STRIKE FORCE: Tigers' Chris Paddack explains obsession with throwing first-pitch strikes In four rehab starts, Gipson-Long posted a 5.17 ERA with four walks and 17 strikeouts across 15⅔ innings. He threw 57 pitches in his most recent start for the Mud Hens. He owns a 4.70 ERA with the Tigers, spanning 23 innings in five games (two starts). In those innings, he has issued four walks while striking out 18 batters. This time, Gipson-Long is ready for any role with the Tigers. "Whatever they need me to do," Gipson-Long said. "If they need to put me in the bullpen, if I need to just eat innings, if I need to start, whatever I got to do to help the team win, I'll do it. I feel comfortable doing whatever." [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Detroit Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] Although Gipson-Long was supposed to pitch Wednesday for the Mud Hens in a fifth rehab start, the Tigers activated him to pitch in the majors. It was a decision made out of necessity. From the bullpen, only right-handed reliever Rafael Montero didn't pitch in the first two games of the series — not including right-hander Troy Melton, a bulk reliever who took over as the starter for Wednesday's game. For Gipson-Long, it might not be a long stay with the Tigers. "When I talked to him, I said, 'Listen, there are a lot of things in play right now, but today, to try to win the series against the White Sox, we need you in the bullpen, potentially for some length,'" Hinch said, explaining his conversation with Gipson-Long. "In saying that, anything can happen, but I think right now, we're not committing to anything other than trying to win today's series." Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold.
