PSNI said they suspect the death may be linked to an assault on a priest in the area earlier in the day.
And it's understood that the priest was asked to hear Confession by the man who went on to attack him.
In relation to the murder probe, Newry, Mourne and Down, District Commander Superintendent Norman Haslett said: 'Police attended an address in the Marian Park area following a report of a deceased man at approximately 12pm on Sunday afternoon, 10th August.
'A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and remains in police custody assisting with enquiries.
'Enquiries are at an early stage and, at this time, we suspect this may be connected to a serious assault in the St Patrick's Avenue area of Downpatrick on Sunday.'
He added: 'I am appealing to anyone who believes they may have information which could assist us with our investigation to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 713 of 10/8/25.'
In the earlier assault on a priest at St Patrick's Avenue, which took place around 10am, a priest was left in a "serious condition".
It is understood the priest suffered head injuries after being struck over the head with a bottle.
He has been taken to hospital and remains in "serious" condition at this time.
After the attack PSNI launched a probe and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
BRUTAL PRIEST ATTACK
The attack was described as "shocking and brutal" by investigating cops.
Detective Chief Inspector McBurney said: "This was a completely shocking and brutal attack and has left the priest with a serious head injury.
"Our enquiries are ongoing into this incident, and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed the assault, or has any information to contact Police on 101 and quoting reference 543 of 10/08/25."
Sinn Fein MP Chris Hazzard said both the attack on the priest and he murder have been "deeply shocking" for the local area.
He said: 'The death of a man, along with the vicious attack on Fr Murray in St Patrick's Church, has deeply saddened and horrified the local community.
'My thoughts are with all those affected by these tragic events including family and friends of the victims, parishioners who were on their way to Mass this morning, and the emergency services who attended the scenes.
'I would encourage anyone with information to contact police to assist them with their investigations.'
PARISH PRAYERS
The church confirmed that Canon Murray remains in a serious condition in hospital.
A spokesperson for the diocese told RTE: "It's very concerning and disturbing that this attack occurred towards a priest who was vulnerable in the course of his ministry and service to the local community.
"Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with Canon John Murray.
"Canon Murray was due to retire as parish priest in the coming weeks and will continue to serve in the local family of parishes."
Alliance South Down MLA Andrew McMurray added that it was "tragic day" for Downpatrick, with locals left reeling.

Inmates are ‘taunting' Bryan Kohberger in Idaho prison
Bryan Kohberger, convicted of murdering four University of Idaho students, has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. He is being held in solitary confinement within the 'J block' of the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, a long-term restrictive housing unit. Kohberger was moved to this unit after complaining that fellow inmates were terrorizing him by shouting through air ducts and taunting him to prevent sleep. A retired homicide detective, Chris McDonough, stated that inmates are making Kohberger's life 'absolutely miserable' through psychological torment. Kohberger accepted a plea deal last month, avoiding a trial, a decision that divided the victims' families.

Costa Rica to start building massive El Salvador-inspired prison
SAN JOSE, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Costa Rica will begin construction this year on a new maximum-security prison inspired by the El Salvador mega-prison at the center of that country's crackdown on crime, Costa Rica's Justice Minister Gerald Campos said on Wednesday. Costa Rica, long considered to be the safest nation in Central America, is grappling with a wave of homicides that have been attributed to drug gang violence. In 2023, it registered its highest-ever homicide rate, and opinion polls rank insecurity as the public's top concern, positioning the issue as a central theme for national elections coming in 2026. The Salvadoran government is providing technical assistance for the project, Campos said. The new prison is necessary because current facilities are nearly 30% overpopulated, creating conditions that allow incarcerated leaders to continue running criminal enterprises, he said. "If we don't do this, the system is going to collapse, and we risk internal conflicts, hostage taking, and riots," Campos told a congressional committee. The new facility, named the Center for High Containment of Organized Crime (CACCO), has been designed to hold 5,100 inmates, increasing Costa Rica's prison capacity by 40%. The government has budgeted the project at $35 million, with Campos saying El Salvador collaborated on blueprints and security technology. Specific details of the project have been declared confidential. The model for the new prison, El Salvador's 40,000-inmate Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), is the centerpiece of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele's war on gangs. While Bukele's crackdown is credited with a sharp drop in El Salvador's murder rate, human rights organizations report abuses within CECOT, describing inhumane conditions and deaths within the prison. El Salvador's government denies those allegations.

Bishop's eerie final 'ride or die' post hours before he, wife and relative were brutally murdered
A North Carolina pastor posted a haunting 'ride or die' family tribute just hours before he, his wife and his mother were brutally shot to death inside their home. Danny Richards, 57, and his wife Sabrina, who had been celebrating her 54th birthday, were found shot to death inside their Lillington home Tuesday evening, according to WRAL News. A third victim, Danny's 74-year-old mother Clara, was also found with gunshot wounds and died shortly after at the hospital. The suspect was quickly identified as the 15-year-old nephew of Danny and Sabrina and the grandson of Clara - a teen whom loved ones said the family had taken in, hoping to give him a better life, according to the outlet. Just under four hours before the horrific killings, Danny posted a chilling Facebook tribute showing the family celebrating Sabrina's birthday, accompanied by a heartfelt message to his wife. 'Happy birthday to the Love of my life, my ride or Die, Sabrina Richards,' the caption read. 'Love you baby!!!' The tragedy began around 5:15pm Tuesday evening, when an unidentified 10-year-old inside the home called authorities to report that several family members had also been shot. Deputies with the Harnett County Sheriff's Office responded quickly to the home in the Trotter's Ridge neighborhood, where they discovered that the three victims had been gunned down. While Danny and Sabrina were pronounced dead at the scene, Clara was still alive but found critically injured outside the home, according to My Daily Record. Emergency radio traffic indicated that she was shot in the abdomen but managed to make it outside the residence, where she was found and rushed to Womack Army Medical Center, as reported by the outlet. Tragically, she died the following day. Fortunately, the 10-year-old child who alerted authorities to the gruesome scene was left physically unharmed. Investigators swiftly identified the suspected shooter as a 15-year-old relative of the victims, whose name has not been released due to his age. After the shooting, authorities said the teenager fled in a vehicle that was later discovered abandoned in a wooded area near Highway 87 and Nursery Road, as reported by WRAL. A large-scale search continued into the night, until around 11pm, when law enforcement located the teen hiding in a wooded area nearby. The young suspect was taken into custody and charged with three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his uncle, aunt and grandmother, according to CBS 17 News. Neighbors and community members expressed shock over the news, with many calling the sudden deaths 'a real tragedy,' according to WRAL. 'This neighborhood is pretty quiet,' neighbor Donald Greaux told the outlet. 'Everybody talks to each other, waves at each other. It's just sad to hear that,' he added. The couple had been married for nearly 30 years and served as Bishop and First Lady of Genesis Grace Ministry in Fayetteville, according to a Facebook post. Together, they regularly organized events with their family to provide food, clothing, medical care, and other essentials to the less fortunate. Additionally, both Danny and Sabrina were Army veterans who served until 2017, a US Army Human Resources Command spokesperson told WRAL. Greaux, who recently retired from the 82nd Airborne Division, told the outlet he had been getting to know his neighbors in the months leading up to their deaths. 'He's a very, very nice guy, and it's a sad situation that him and his family,' he told WRAL. 'He loves his family, for whatever the situation was.' Danny's haunting final post quickly amassed dozens of comments from friends and community members expressing disbelief over the unexpected murders. 'I just heard the news. I'm blown away. You were one of the most influential leaders I had. Rest in paradise!' one comment read. Another user, who appeared to know Danny from his Army days, added: 'This is so sad man. I just heard the news and this one really hurts man. CSM Rich was a great leader and a better human being.' 'CSM Richards was a genuine kind soul. I also met Sabrina as well,' he added. 'Didn't get to work or know her like I did CSM, but I did know that she loved him dearly. My condolences go out to the rest of their families…' A third wrote: 'I'm at a loss for words. Just know I was always remember how you inspired me to be better and do better CSM. I am saddened to hear the bad news today. God bless you and your entire family. Your legacy will live forever.' 'This is such a tragedy. Disgusting, avoidable and unnecessary tragedy,' said another. Authorities have not yet released a possible motive for the triple murder, and the investigation remains ongoing. The suspected teenage shooter is currently being held in a North Carolina juvenile detention center.
