Apple App Store drives Rs 44,447 crores in India sales; developers' global earnings triple
Apple on Monday released a new study conducted by Professor Viswanath Pingali from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, on the economic impact of its App Store ecosystem in India. According to Apple, the App Store in India facilitated Rs 44,447 crores ($5.31 billion) in developer billings and sales. Notably, over 94 per cent of that revenue went directly to developers and businesses of all sizes, without any commission paid to Apple.
'The App Store has been an economic miracle for developers in India and all around the world, and we're thrilled to support their work. This study underlines the power of India's incredibly vibrant app economy. And we're committed to continuing to invest in the success of developers of all sizes as they build apps that make an important impact and enrich people's lives,' said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.
According to the study titled 'The Apple Ecosystem in India: Its Value to Developers and Users,' since the launch of the App Store 15 years ago, developers in India have found more ways to monetise their apps across categories such as games, health and fitness, lifestyle, and utilities, fuelling a dynamic and healthy ecosystem.
The report also highlights that nearly 80 per cent of India-based developers' earnings in 2024 came from users outside India, and 87 per cent of Indian developers were active on multiple storefronts. Apps from Indian developers were downloaded more than 755 million times in 2024 –– double the number from five years ago — and Indian-developed apps ranked among the top 100 most-downloaded apps in 70 storefronts outside India.
Similarly, the total App Store earnings of small developers grew by 74 per cent between 2021 and 2024 in India, with initiatives like the App Store Small Business Program offering reduced commission rates to help small developers scale.
To further boost this momentum, Apple has set up a Developer Center in Bengaluru to provide hands-on support, training, and access to over 250,000 APIs through frameworks like HealthKit, Metal, and Core ML. Between 2020 and 2023, Apple prevented over $7 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions, including $1.8 billion in 2023 alone. Apple also rejected more than 1.7 million app submissions for failing to meet its high privacy, security, and quality standards.

Govt reiterates commitment to women's empowerment
Hyderabad: Telangana's IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu has reaffirmed the state government's resolute commitment to women's empowerment, stressing that this dedication is evidenced not merely by words, but through decisive and measurable actions. The Minister made these remarks during the ceremonial launch of the 'SITHA' (She Is The Hero Always) app, developed by SheJobs, held here on Monday. He described the app's introduction as a celebration of a broader movement, one that aims to provide women across Telangana, irrespective of their background, with equal access to opportunities, economic independence, and leadership roles. 'True empowerment,' the Minister asserted, 'occurs when women are free to exercise their rights within the household and are actively involved in decision-making.' Quoting the latest 'Men and Women in India – 2024' report, released by the Central Statistical Office (CSO), he highlighted that 86% of rural women and 89% of urban women in Telangana are participating in household decisions. 'These are not just statistics,' he stated, 'but indicators of Telangana's silent revolution towards gender equity. They represent steps towards fulfilling the vision of a just and inclusive society.' He underlined that women form the backbone of Telangana's social fabric, and the government remains unwavering in its mission to ensure equal access to education, employment, and leadership. The government is establishing Mahila Shakti Canteens at government offices and tourist locations and has already distributed Rs 21,000 crore in zero interest loans within just the first year of this initiative. Furthermore, Telangana has entered agreements with oil corporations to set up petrol bunks in all 31 districts, which will be managed by women's collectives, in an effort to further promote self reliance and financial security.

PM Modi to visit Cyprus in the middle of Turkiye-Pakistan solidarity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi (File photo) NEW DELHI: As India works to expand its footprint in Europe, PM Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus on his way to Canada for the G7 summit and Croatia while returning home. Both Cyprus and Croatia are members of the EU and the former will hold the rotating presidency of the EU Council for the first half of the next year. Modi was scheduled to travel to Croatia last month, along with the Netherlands and Norway, but the visit had to be postponed because of the military tensions between India and Pakistan. The G7 summit takes place at Kananaskis in Alberta from June 15 to 17, with Modi participating in the outreach session on the last day. The eleventh hour invitation by Canada means that PM's programme is yet to be finalised but government sources said efforts are underway to schedule bilateral meetings. The visit to Cyprus, only the 3rd by an Indian PM after A B Vajpayee in 2002 and Indira Gandhi in 1983, will also be followed closely as it comes in the middle of tensions between India and Turkiye over the latter's support to Pakistan - and the show of solidarity by President Recep Erdogan himself - during the India-Pakistan military clash last month. Ankara's recognition of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the northern region that was seized by Turkish forces in 1974 and differences over gas exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean remain a constant source of tensions between Turkiye and Cyprus. India has consistently backed solution of what is known as the Cyprus problem through UNSC resolutions and international law. As Turkiye stands solidly with Pakistan, India has sought to strengthen ties with both Cyprus and Greece, focusing on defence and security cooperation. Modi became the first Indian PM to visit Greece in 40 years when he travelled to Athens in 2023. Both countries have supported India on issues concerning terrorism and also on Kashmir. According to the MEA, Cyprus has backed India on a number of significant issues like India's election to UNSC, the India-US Civil Nuclear Agreement, NSG membership and also the 1998 nuclear tests. Modi's visit to Croatia on his way back will also be the first visit by any Indian PM to the country. S Jaishankar became the first Indian foreign minister to visit the southeast European country in 2021 as the 2 countries looked to expand bilateral ties. Two years later, India and Croatia also signed an MoU for defence cooperation.
