Nawazuddin Siddiqui slams streaming platforms for prioritizing profit over art: 'Baazar toh ban hi gaya'
Nawazuddin Siddiqui criticized streaming platforms for prioritizing profits over creativity, calling them marketplaces. He warned that overemphasizing commercial aspects harms art. Recently, Anurag Kashyap called Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos 'the definition of dumb,' sparking mixed reactions, including a subtle jab from Ekta Kapoor referencing Kashyap's 'saas-bahu' remark. Nawazuddin Siddiqui has frequently voiced his concerns about the Hindi film industry's shortcomings. Recently, he also took aim at streaming services, accusing them of putting business and profits ahead of creativity and artistic quality. According to him, these platforms have turned into commercial hubs, losing sight of true artistic values. Streaming Platforms Turning into Marketplaces Talking to SCREEN, Siddiqui said, 'Irrespective of any platform or any process, it starts out as great and then turns into a market. Baazar toh ban hi gaya hai. Studios in India keep saying we need 'commercial' qualities attached to every project. I don't agree with that. If the product is of a certain quality, then the commercial aspect eventually gets attached to it organically.' The Harm of Overemphasizing Commercial Aspects He explained that placing too much emphasis on the commercial side of art can cause significant harm. Over time, projects that begin with great passion often end up becoming purely business ventures. He covered a range of topics, from Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane's 'Sacred Games' to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Heeramandi'. And netizens cannot stop reacting read more Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos' revelations in his interview with Nikhil Kamath have gone viral and now. He covered a range of topics, from Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane's 'Sacred Games' to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Heeramandi'. And netizens cannot stop reacting. Some took to Instagram to comment on the post hailing the episode as one user wrote– 'Netflix didn't recommend this but this is the real must-watch.' One commented, 'I felt like this episode was with the most honest replies loved this also your questions are amazing' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Some netizens expressed appreciation in the episode's comment section on Youtube, 'watched the entire thing in a sitting. its been a good saturday, (youtube algorithm show me more content similar to this' A comment read, 'Should've titled 'Netflix and Chill with the Netflix CEO'. Another user wrote , 'Ted answered all the questions really well. Nikhil tried his best to trip him but he answered beautifully every time because he has good knowledge of both, himself and the business.' A user also said, 'Very good Podcast, Impressed with clarity of Co- CEO Ted on range of topics As always Nikhil was amazing ..' A comment read, 'Wow ! What an amazing set of questions and equally candid responses! He is naturally good and exhibits great clarity! Thanks Nikhil for this.' Ted on Sacred Games Our very first Indian original show was Sacred Games. And I thought, 'This is going to be great. People in India love movies. This is a TV show that feels as big as a movie, it has movie stars.' What's interesting about it is that it was very, very novel, but what I didn't understand was that we were introducing a brand new kind of entertainment in a country the size of India. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD On Heeramandi Heeramandi was probably one of the most creatively interesting projects I've worked on in India. I was involved in the greenlighting meetings for it. He (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) came to LA to do the pitch. He came in with this very big vision. Honestly, it almost felt like a dare—like he was saying, 'I dare you to make this; it's so big. He's a legend of cinema, so the idea of him making a TV Show was unheard of. I thought he came for us to say no. And then, when we said yes, there were lots of delays. It was a complicated production.

After Anurag Kashyap's dig at Netflix CEO, Nawazuddin Siddiqui shows disappointment in streaming platforms: ‘Shuruat passion se hoti hai, fir dhandha ban jata hai'
A couple of days ago, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap called Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos 'the definition of dumb' after he insinuated that he should have launched the streaming giant in India with something 'more populist' than Sacred Games in 2018. Helmed by Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, the gangster drama series starred Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Now, Siddiqui has also expressed disappointment in the direction Indian streaming has been heading in lately. While he claimed that he's only filming a show now, five years after Sacred Games season 2, he has done over half a dozen films across OTT platforms like Netflix India, Prime Video India, and ZEE5. 'Irrespective of any platform or any process, it starts out as great and then turns into a market. Baazar toh ban hi gaya hai. Studios in India keep saying we need 'commercial' qualities attached to every project. I don't agree with that. If the product is of a certain quality, then the commercial aspect eventually gets attached to it organically,' Siddiqui tells SCREEN exclusively. 'If you keep giving so much importance to the commercial aspects in art, then it'll cause a lot of damage. Toh yehi hua hai, over a period of time, shuruat bahut passion se hoti hai, fir uska dhandha ban jata hai (That's what's happened, they start off with a lot of passion, then they just turn it into a business),' Siddiqui adds. Both Siddiqui and Kashyap have maintained that the Hindi film industry is no different than streaming right now. 'Ab jo chor hote hain, voh kahan se creative ho sakte hain. Humne south se churaya, kabhi yahan se churaya, kabhi wahan se churaya. Even some cult films, which became hits, unke scenes bhi chori kare hue hain. Isko itna normalise kardiya gaya ki chori hai toh kya hua? (Now, how can thieves be creative? We've stolen from the South, sometimes from here, sometimes from there. Even some cult films that became hits have scenes that were copied. This has been so normalised that it's like — so what if it's stolen?),' Siddiqui pointed out in an interview with Puja Talwar earlier this year. 'And then actors and directors start quitting — like Anurag Kashyap, who was bringing in good work,' he added, referring to Kashyap's recent proclamation that he's relocated to the South to work there. 'I've left Mumbai. I want to stay away from film people. The industry has become too toxic. Everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next Rs 500 or Rs 800 crore film,' Kashyap told The Hindu.
