Michal Nowosadzki is one of the best bridge players in Poland, and if you are one of the best players in Poland you are one of the best players in the world. Now in his thirties, Michal played with Jacek Kalita on the Polish national team, winning two Gold Medals in 2015 and 2019.
This simple but instructive hand cropped up in the Euro-Transnational qualifiers in Poznan in June and may well have contributed to another gold medal – but this time for Pierre Zimmermann and Switzerland.
The principle of not letting the opponents alter your plan by what they do is an important one, and the stronger the opposition, the less likely that they're just handing you tricks.
Michal's 2♠ opening was constructive and North happily raised him to game. West started with a high Club which held and a second Club. South drew trumps and then played three rounds of Diamonds, hoping to put West on lead, but it was East who came in and played a low Heart. Now what?
If you think it's a guess, I'm afraid you are not among the world's best players. East doesn't have to play Hearts – he's got a perfectly safe exit with the fourth Diamond. Then you'd have to play Hearts yourself, and the only viable play is a Heart to the King. Don't let East get a good story – not to mention a good score; go up with the King as you would have done had you played the suit yourself!

Aberdeen move step closer to finding out Europa League play-off opponents after thrilling FCSB v Drita first leg

Aberdeen's two potential Europa League play-off opponents, Romania's FCSB and Drita, met in Bucharest on Thursday for their third qualifying round clash first leg. It was a thriller at Arena Nationala, with underdogs Drita going 2-0 in front early in the second period, when Arb Manaj added to Veton Tusha's opening period goal. However, Daniel Birligea and then Daniel Gravoac hauled the home side level, and hitman Birligea then converted a penalty in the 94th minute to complete the turnaround. Despite needing a stoppage time winner to end a run of four straight defeats across domestic and European action, the Romanian champions are now in the driver's seat to progress ahead of the sides' second meeting in Kosovo next week, with Drita's Euro games taking place at the national stadium in capital Pristina, rather than Gjilan. The winners will take on Aberdeen at Pittodrie two Thursdays from now (August 21), with the return scheduled for the following week (Thursday, August 28).

Lions put CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (shoulder) on IR

August 7 - After Detroit Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. exited Monday's practice with a shoulder injury, coach Dan Campbell warned that the second-year player could be out a while "at best." Indeed that is the case, as the Lions placed Rakestraw on injured reserve after he underwent shoulder surgery on Thursday. As a result, the 2024 second-round pick out of Missouri will miss the entire 2025 season. Prior to his procedure, Rakestraw posted a picture of himself in a hospital gown to his Instagram story with the caption, "Road to Be back starts soon." The shoulder injury was yet another setback for the second-year pro, who was already dealing with a chest contusion suffered during the first day of training camp. His rookie campaign, during which he recorded six tackles across eight games, was also shortened by injuries to his ankle and hamstring. --Field Level Media
