Woman held over death of man who was locked out naked on balcony
The 54-year-old was arrested on charges of assault and lethal confinement, police in southern Japan's Nagasaki region told the AFP news agency.
In February 2022, the woman "ordered the victim to get out on a balcony while he was naked, and confined him there," local official Masafumi Tanigawa said.
The next day police rushed to the scene after an emergency call, and the 49-year-old was found "nearly dead" in a room, Tanigawa said, adding he later died of hypothermia.
The temperature that night dropped to a low of 3.7 Celsius (38.66 Fahrenheit), the Mainichi daily reported.
The woman had earlier attacked her partner, who was her common-law husband, with a knife, leaving him with nose injuries that took two weeks to heal.
An autopsy revealed a cut wound on the man's nose, and police are investigating the possibility that the man was a victim of daily domestic violence, the Mainichi reported.
The woman denies the charges, telling police that "I've done nothing," Tanigawa quoted her as saying.
Police did not say why it had taken so long to formally charge her.

Prosecutors: Uniformed Detroit cop assaulted, pointed gun at mother of his children
An ex-Detroit police officer is accused of following the mother of his children into a parking lot on the city's west side, holding her at gunpoint and assaulting her while in uniform. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday, Aug. 19, announced it was charging Justice Calvin, 31, with assault with a dangerous weapon, felony firearm, larceny from the person and domestic violence. He turned himself in earlier the same day, according to a media release from Prosecutor Kym Worthy's office. Calvin, who was an officer at the time, allegedly trailed the woman in his vehicle to the parking lot of a nursing home at Schaefer and Fenkell just before midnight on Jan. 26, the release said. Once in the parking lot, he pointed his gun at her and forcefully removed her from the passenger side of her vehicle, then physically assaulted her. Calvin was due to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon in 36th District Court. The Detroit Police Department did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Suspect in car-ramming attack on German Christmas market charged with murder
BERLIN -- The suspect in a deadly car-ramming attack on a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg has been charged with murder, attempted murder and bodily harm, prosecutors said Tuesday, claiming he was trying to kill as many people as possible. Five women and a boy died, and many more people were wounded, in the Dec. 20 attack that lasted just over a minute. Authorities have identified the suspect as a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who arrived in Germany in 2006 and had received permanent residency. They haven't officially released his name, in keeping with German privacy rules. In an indictment filed to the state court in Magdeburg, prosecutors say he is charged with six counts of murder, 338 counts of attempted murder and 309 counts of bodily harm. He is also accused of dangerous interference with road traffic. Murder charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. The Magdeburg court will decide whether to send the case to trial. Prosecutors said the man wasn't under the influence of alcohol and apparently carried out the attack 'out of dissatisfaction and frustration with the course and outcome of a civil law dispute and the failure of various criminal complaints.' They said he aimed to kill as many people as possible and had spent several weeks planning the attack, without accomplices or anyone else knowing about his plans. The attack was carried out with a rented BMW X3, which reached speeds of up to 48 kph (30 mph) during the rampage. Officials have said the suspect doesn't fit the usual profile of perpetrators of extremist attacks. The man described himself as an ex-Muslim who was highly critical of Islam and on social media expressed support for the far-right.
